View Full Version : Dealer apathy?

Cannot believe how little many dealers seem to care about new business there. I have emailed more than once about 9 or 10 dealers in and around Wellington and the only guy to get back to me is Carl from Motorad. I stated in emails what I was looking for when I get there in about a month and a half which translates to somewhere between $10,000.00 and 20,000.00. I guess good old Carl will be getting my business. Just a little rant wondering why most of these dealers even have contact info on their websites.
Anyone here had dealings with Motorad and care to enlighten me if they are good to deal with?

I have just Bought a bike from them. I dealt with Glen, and everything went very well. I live at the opposite end of the country to wellington so buying thru the web and by phone I had to grill Glen about everything. He was very good to deal with. And I am very happy with my new bike. I can recommend them for sure.

Really Jeff?

Firstly, there's only 5 dealers in the Wellington region and I personally have email exchanges between you and myself dating back to May 31, last one being yesterday.

For the record, I'm not Carl and I don't work at Motorad.

So I guess one of us is telling half truths.

I am talking about not just Wellington but a bit north as well. Do you want a list of all the dealers I've been in contact with and the only 2 or 3 that have gotten back to me? 2 or 3 since May and only Carl in the last week or so that I have been making more inquireries and 2 after I put up this post. And why don't you enlighten me who you are really so I can make sure you don't get any of my business when I get there smart guy since it seems more important to you to call me out then to help. Fact is I went back and checked my emails and it's even more then 10 when I include dealers from Auckland and also the northern part of south island and only a small fraction have even had the courtesy to email any kind of reply back. Good way to run a business.

The others might not count because they might not be "in and around Wellington" but might be "a bit north"

To be fair, he did say the Wellington region...which covers more than Wellington city.

If I were use the Waikato region as an area of reference, that would include Morrinsville/Cambridge etc...not just Hamilton

Yea I check that always and nothing. Example, I've emailed City Honda 5 or 6 times with 4 of those times being in the last week cause they had quite a few bikes I liked and have yet to hear anything from them other then the automated reply when you contact them from they're web page telling me someone will be getting back to shortly.

Actually, working in such a small industry it pisses me off when people want to make bogus claims that "only one person in the whole Wellington region got back to me" when it's quite simply not true. That's why it's important for me to call you out. Because you're talking crap.

So which is it? 2 or 3 replied or "only Carl from Motorad" because now I'm confused.

A simple search through some of my posts will enlighten you as to who I am and where I work. As to not wanting to help you out, I'm really more than happy to. I enjoy assisting fellow bikers and I'm paid well to do it.

I have experienced similar with my small business.

We had an 0800 number. People would ring up, and insist the other person they spoke to had offered them a better price or said the freight would be free.

Given that at that time I was a one man band and I had taken every call it was always amusing to hear people insisting they had spoken to someone else.

WTF would I want to do any business with you? It seems more important to you to call me out then help. How the hell would you know how many replies I get back? Do you have access to my email? Go back to my post 2 back explaining the 2 or 3 and the 1 in my OP. But good job "calling me out" though.

Not to step on anyones toes, or take sides, But I too had a similar experience about 6 mnths ago. And I live here in NZ. I was looking to upgrade, and wennt on Motorcycle Trader website, where I found about 8 possible bikes that I liked. 2 of them were at the same dealership. So I have emailed all 7 dealers around the country, and only ever got a reply back from 2 of them. I thought that maybe my emails weren't getting through so I have emailed the other 5 again and still nothing. I guess they weren't interested in getting my business. I went and saw the other 2 and got a very warm reception and great help. I was clear in my intentions and both offered to give me the bikes for a test run so i could experience the difference for my self knowing that I possibly would not buy their particular bike anyway.

Dude - although you probably don't mean it, you're sounding a touch harsh. I can understand your frustration of not getting e-mail responses and some places not even having e-mail contact information or websites. I have found it a bit strange how many businesses in NZ do not have a web page. Although, I haven't been looking at bikes.

However, coming in here and pretty much telling motorcycle industry where to go probably won't help you solve your problems.

Maybe a little more tact next time. "Hey guys I am having a difficult time getting answers from motorcycle dealers...."

Here is another suggestion, feel free to do what you want. Get yourself a calling card or similar. It is quite reasonable to call NZ from Toronto as long as you are not calling a mobile number. My wife paid $20cnd and got something like +300 minutes of calling NZ. 1866 619 7708 to pay the money. Then you call 1866-301-9461 hit 1 or something for English and it will tell you to punch in your number. You might know this already, but it is 011 - 64 (NZ country code) - then the rest of the phone number, just don't dial their 0 before their local area codes. It will then tell you how many minutes you have available for your call.

Note -> I have noticed that I get A LOT more traction with NZ companies if I talk to them on the phone first. They will take you more seriously after you have established phone contact. Then you can use E-mail effectively. Try this and you might find that it works better for you. Plus one thing I will note, they tend to actually ANSWER the phone more often than similar Canadian companies.

BTW - have fun when you get there. Wellington is a beautiful area... and you are always a quick jump to the South Island.

Thanks for that, your not kidding. The point of OP was wondering why even have email if your not answering it? Of course when I get there I'm going to physically check out places but trying to contact ppl first to see if they have the bikes I'm looking for and if they have a bike buy back program first so I don't waste my time as I only have about 2 months there and don't want to be wasting weeks looking for bike. Laying the groundwork and all that. Thanks to the few who have been helpful.

That's how it works there? It's up to the customers to be nice in order to get the privilege to have a dealer deal with them? He called me out and a liar and that's gonna make me want to do business with him? I have heard nothing but excellent things about New Zealand and it's people and hospitality but a few of you are sure proving that wrong. I will be coming with the assumption that the former is mostly true and wont be narrow minded enough to paint everyone with one brush as a few of you have done.

Motorcycle shops have website because the "idiots guide to running a motorcycle shop' says you should have one. Like all businesses some will use it better than others and some will get stuck with a difficult to use dud. Hell - the website will continue quite some time after the bike shop has actually closed....

Likewise, some sales people are not always going to reply to a difficult to do email. They tend to be busy on deals they can do not ones they can't. You must realise THOUSANDS come here every year and everyone has this bright idea that will save them some $$ rather than renting a bike. Usually the dealers not going to make much so guess what, they get tired of replying cos they just cant convince folks they can't help them.

Usually sales people are people persons and to be fair some of them are grumpy cunts in the flesh let alone over the hinternet. The majority didnt start out being grumpy cunts, in fact most start all starry eyed wanting to work in the motorcycle industry an all but slowly reality bites and its all down hill.... Sad but true and anyone who has been to a dealership in the USA and Canada will probably have similar stories to tell.

Personally I've emailed companies overseas regarding various item and only a third ever reply (if that) to emails...

You will be sweet mate - you can probably get away with something waaay cheaper than the sort of $$ you are talking. Have a look on trademe for something you like. I don't mind spending the money if I get back 70-75% of what I pay. To me it's worth it compared to renting for 2 months or even bringing my bike from Canada which is just too much hassle. I need a bike that's comfy for long tour but can also rip it up too. That's why I've narrowed down to Triumph Sprint, Honda VFR or Suzuki 1250FA. I like fully faired with hard side bags.

Hard luggage is good but...

You wont be able to rip it up much - the cops here are many and tickets flow like water (justifiably on most occasions) besides, you DO want to see the place right?

You wont be in the saddle long periods here. Its very small...

Margins in shops are very tight, getting back 75% will be tough.

Getting something too flash means being a target if you leave it parked up some place. Whats wrong with this? Its damn near 25% of a $20K bike.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/tourers/auction-410138577.htm

That actually isn't a bad bike, not sure how I missed it. I have been on Trade Me for the last couple months looking. I have been quoted 70-75% buy back already assuming I don't bring the bike back bagged, so cost is not really an issue.

You wont be in the saddle long periods here. Its very small...

Margins in shops are very tight, getting back 75% will be tough.

Getting something too flash means being a target if you leave it parked up some place. Whats wrong with this? Its damn near 25% of a $20K bike.

Cheap as chips - get it serviced, new tyres and we will sell it for you if you want as long as you aint silly about the price.

Thank You

You're lucky Hawkeye, Jim's never offered to buy me a cup of coffee. Whatever happened to all our friendly Wellington KB lunches too, maybe we could have one of them when jmmk hits town?

In order to assist the Dealers further Motorcycle Trader now have a system where if you telephone about one of the advertised models on motorcycletrader.co.nz and no one takes your phone call we'll let that Dealer know so they can give you a call back or at least be aware that you have questions about that particular motorcycle.

Unfortunately we're unable to do that for un-replied emails but we definitely know if you've sent one via our website. I see the number of email requests coming through with questions and requests for test rides on the new models via our New Bike Showroom so keep them coming. These are sent directly to the brands Head Office so that they are made aware and can advise the nearest Dealer to you that has a demo model on the floor.

Well Motorad definitely came through for me. Had my bike basically an hour after getting off the plane. They could not have been easier to deal with. And thanks to Whitetrash for letting me know where not to go.

Carl must be desperate answering emails from Canada when everyone else is obviously too busy snorting cocaine off a hookers ass :innocent:

Hookers with Donkeys? Fuck, that's dodgy.

I'd imagine Whitetrash couldn't post any of your emails on this site proving that you're crock full of shit because it would be illegal for him to do so.

As for service:
a) When visiting Wellington I pretty much got the choice of any Yamaha in their shop to take for a test ride (one shot of a Super Ten later)...even after protesting to WhiteTrash that I was skint.
b) my brake pads were as thin as rizlas and they were quite happy to let a mate borrow some of their tools and use their workshop to change them.

I'm a hard to please miserable scottish cunt who's always whining about crap Kiwi service, but i'd conclude that you're a judgemental candadian fuck. I had a very similar experience when trying to arrange a bike in Los Angeles. Next time pick up the phone.

Now have a nice trip, ride safe, enjoy the overpriced kiwi coffee and don't give the boys in blue too much in fines :bye:

For what are you thanking me again? Oh that's right, for defending myself and the three other major Wellington bike shops when you started spouting shit about how NONE of us replied to you but in reality at least three of four did.

Glad to hear Carl and the team looked after you though Jeff and you got the right machine for your trip. Good bunch of guys in there who take their job seriously.

Enjoy the rest of your holiday and enjoy our beautiful country.

Thank Christ, I was beginning to think you thought I'd offended you in some way. Glad we've sorted that out and you hit the nail on the head, it's a forum, and one seldom taken too seriously just quietly.

As for Scracha, he really is a raving scottish poofter. Srysly.

It's your stupid Kiwi accent. When you asked what I'd like, I replied "R6" and for some reason you bent over. In my country it's only gay if you take it.
