getting your first service done ...

probably a bit of a silly question, but what work would you expect to have done on the first service on a bike?

Nothing but change the oil and look at it.

Sure they should follow the service book, but this is New Zealand; I'm just happy if it comes back without scratches on it and the filter raplced. Never had any problems with my new bikes first services, but it pays to have low standards.

Nobody gives a crap about your bike like you do, if you're not happy with the concept I've outlined above, do it yourself; it's all rudimentary stuff.

Your first service is your opportunity to put your chosen Service Provider to the test.

All they need do is replace the soft oil with the real stuff, try not to over-tighten the sump plug when they put it back, and also try not to overfill it.

You might want to give them some tasks that you would like to have checked: Throttle, Clutch, & brake cable adjustments.

How's the coolant looking? Mine went a sloppy cruddy brown aftre a few weeks.

well, first service done, oil filter not changed, coolant level below minimum, chain not cleaned, the leak on the petrol tank which was bubbling the paint has been sanded back and now there's just bare metal there ('tested ok' though!) oil is there but much darker than I'd expect etc etc etc. I guess I shouldn't take it there for the next one!!

And yes, I know it's all pretty easy to do myself but it's a brand new bike and I want it to have a dealer service history ...

If what you say is true, that is appalling. No filter change!! Please check your handbook or service manual to see what should have been done.
If the dealer has not done this, go back and insist on rectification. If they fail, and you are confident in your allegations, name and shame.

well, unless they gave me a filter for free it aint on there! Still, I'll be giving them a ring tomorrow and trying to sort it out :)
