Hi guys, I am fairly new to dirt bike riding and I have just got myself a WR250F. I considered the 450 but thought since being new I should get something that will not be too much of a handful to learn on...and do see this being a stepping stone and not trying to be over zealous. I am 6'2" and 98kg so in some views a bit big for a 250...open to opinions! Anyway I digress - I have got myself a new 09 model and it is stock standard and very quiet and seems to be restricted. So any suggestions and/or recommendations what I should do to fit it out to be more fun. First is suspension...I know this is the best investment but what next? Thanks guys:-)

If it feels restricted it's because it is...
Not all of these mods will apply, as some are for older variants, but the throttle stop and grey wire mods do.

Enjoy your free power!

The WR's are sprung very soft to start with, your best option is to send the suspension to a specialist like proride to get the right springs for your weight.
I had an 2005 WR250 when I was learning, weighed about 90 at the time and found it far to soft. It makes it very hard especially when learning trying cope with an under sprung bike. I think you would probably need to go up 3 spring weights....The WR could easily do with revalving too, but I would just get the springs right first. Have a chat to Greg at proride.
I did most of the free mods on Thumperfaq which did make a big difference, well worth the time.

Im 6ft 4 and weigh 110kg have been riding a yz250f for a few years now. Cant express strongly enough about setting suspension up first (Realise you have mentioned that). I went from the stock rear spring 4.9 kg/mm to 6.013 kg/mm. This made a huge difference all round. I also have a heaver oil in the front shocks but Im not 100% sure if this has made that much of a difference, I think bigger springs will be my next move. I have heard of taller riders getting higher riser for their bars and also placing bars forward for longer reach, however I havnt had to do anything like that. All the best. This site has a good calculator to work out required springs. http://www.racetech.com/page/id/17

Hi guys, I think I have solved all my problems!! :-) I have sold the WR250F this weekend and bought myself a WR450F which has had suspension setup (RG3?) for a 100kg rider. The bike is unbelievable and I cannot tell you how amazing the ride is compared to my WR250 which was not setup for me. The power is fantastic and I feel a lot more in control of the bike even though I know if I do something stupid with my right wrist it could be all over very quickly  . Anyway now I am setup and ready to get out and do some adventure and cross country rides. But I will take it slowly slowly baby and will get some guidance and mentoring. Thanks for the suggestions guys all very valuable.

Ha ha, that's one way of sorting it!
But you'll be fine with the 450, it makes a fair bit more power than the 250, but it's still all very friendly. The extra weight is definitely noticeable over the 250 and you might find it tires you out more, but the extra grunt means you can be more lazy with your riding style...
