It's about the roads becoming impassable and treacherous.

I was told recently by someone who knows that the reason for the endless road melt problem is:

- Road surfacing jobs usually specify that if there's not enough bitumen in the mix to hold it together, the job has to be redone for free.

- Too much bitumen, however, there's no penalty for.

- Therefore it's in the interests of the contractor to err on the side of mixing too much bitumen in for the amount of aggregate in the seal.

- This causes the tarbleed problem - a perfect mix shouldn't do that anywhere near as much as what we generally see.

- The other benefit of this approach is of course that a couple of years later, once the road's bled itself to death, the same contractor usually gets to come back and re-do the job at the roading authority's cost.

We've just had this problem at work - the main access road we built had some chipseal put down and it's already bled like fuck on its uphill portion from all the concrete truck traffic. Doesn't matter too much, because it's going to get hotmix on top before the job's finished. But it was still interesting to have a chat with the construction manager and find out that chip seal shouldn't do that if it's properly laid.

This thread hasn't served to show the 'folly of these sorts of group rides'

The thread didn't need to - the video itself was quite sufficient.

Nah, chiefly it shows a backlash against the 'blame anything but ourself' mindset.

That's it in a nutshell.

It's human nature to absolve ourselves of blame, and it is never any more apparent than bikers looking for excuses for why they fell off. The old "I was getting my knee down at the roundabout, and fell off because of a man-hole cover / tar snake / oil / diesel / fucking cager / blah blah...".

These guys fucked up. It's no big deal - provided that they (and more so their supporters) are willing to accept it. Until then, they're going to get more derision than sympathy.

onearmedbandit
26th December 2011, 09:04
Purely and simply the road is solely to blame, evident by the fact that every bike on the ride fell over. Oh wait.

Grantman_

Nah, chiefly it shows a backlash against the 'blame anything but ourself' mindset.

More a tendency to eagerly go off half-cocked. Those seeking out to punish, rightfully, a blatant 'blame everything mindset' have started to jump at shadows, speculation and the merest perceived whiff of it. To the point it’s really going way overboard in my opinion.

Then I kept riding because I was riding within my own personal limits.

You saw straight through me, it's true. As I was coming through the slight corner, the road jumped up with a knife, slashed my tyres and then man-raped me as I was lying in the bitumen.

I still have white paint in some areas.

Actually V rods aint so bad on gravel bro...seems it must be tar seal they cant stick to....... cold tyres maybe?

I was riding with a 'rod through the rapa when our back road turned into a 12 km long gravel track, it was utter shyte on my super duke (simply way too much grunt at the back) but his v-rod handled it with ease!

Prick let me know it too......

IMO there is nothing wrong (unusual compared to the norm) about that section of road.

This is an embarrassment for all bikers and completely justifies the Govt's increase of our ACC levies. A totally indefensible instance of gross rider error on a dead straight section of road. Thanks guys. Way to represent.

Why can't people learn to ride safely before riding on the road. Group rides should be banned (at least for fair weather posers).

Please do us all a favour and contribute to motorcycle safety by selling your bikes.

And yes. The video music was gay. But then it was a chopper ride.

Regardless of the official verdict on cause of this multiple vehicle accident....what's the bet this bit of road will be resealed before the end of summer?

And whats the bet it has been scheduled for resealing this summer, and was dialled into budgets, about 3 years ago, because thats about how long it takes to plan such work. But, if it is sealed this summer, whats the bet that some bruised ego rider who just happened to fall off on it this year, and complain, will claim credit for having it resealed.

Cant believe that this threads is still going at 19 pages. These people just need accept personal responsibilty for their own choices, and fuckups and move on. Period.

The corner is behind the action shot in front of camera???
You can't see the Police car parked as it was back up around the corner...I know it was there
cause he closed the road off to stop cars/traffic from heading around that bend into the straight.

Can someone explain to me why the road surface is considered to be "SHOCKING"? I'm not seeing it.

I was very judmental myself but read this

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/6202027/Wet-weather-creates-Waikato-road-chaos

it does make you think its all very well having flash bikes but sure do make mess when crash and talking about pain
suffering involved gee makes us look like dicks, and govt going on about acc levys look at that video
helicopter pick up thats got cost us the tax payers big bucks not to mention 3 amblances i quickly saw and thats
6 staff right there taken away from other duties if you going ride big groups keep speed down under 80kph
and dont follow so close damm... its common sence
Mind you i seen group riders before on ashurst bridge made me nervous thinking maybe wont ride bike again
I think stick to biking on my own least cant blame anyone esle if you come of.
Might be diffrent when actually riding bike again.. must admit wattching from sidelines does give you diffrent perpestive on it
maybe everone should spend day working with poice amblance staff and we all have better attitudes to each other
they can go for ride on the bikes around town see where not looneys

When you have a group of bikes riding the same lines through the road , the surface may change due to bikes ripping the surface up, after looking at road, it had been turned to shit. . so its not always about the rider and you can not keep saying its the riders fault . it can be the road surface. . But we seem to have so many experts on here , wait have not seen there names in any magazines with regards to motorcycles and riding skills or safety tips , Oh thats right they post on here. Imagine if the WRB's were on the road featured in the video ... the increased carnage THAT would have caused. Their very location removes any escape route for ANYBODY encountering something (or someone) on the road ahead .... that might be a good idea to AVOID.

WRB's have no regard for skill levels ... For whatever reason we hit them ... it will hurt.

I dont think that video did much to promote motorcycling in any way. Other than the dangerous pastime that it is. I believe our appreciation for this has already been stated.

So why did so many crash is that they got so sure there over confidence forgot the 3 sec rule ?

Mileage doesn't relate to skill level and if everyone in the group is exceptionally aware of the road , weather and surroundings then they wouldn't have crashed would they

+1

The sad part not that made the mistake its the attitude of its okay and not learning from it . if you repeat same error
U are stubid.

And for the experice i been biking since was 15 years old doesint mean moments inatetion or not reading the road
not going to happen because some magic force feild of the force that insit realistic

Re time of riding experience. I'm not sure just how relevant this is as it has to equated to the type of experience. Like katman I took up despatch riding in London. By 11.30 on the first day I was stuffed, wet through and frazzeled by the number of very near misses, there was still 6 hours to go and 4 days before the weekend. This was despite riding hundreds of hours touring Europe, riding on a daily basis since I was 16 and knowing London - or I thought I did.
Three years of this I survived in a profession where there was a 100% probability of ending up in casualty within your first year or six months in most cases. I am grateful since the skills learnt have been invalueable, embedded in the my brain box and life saving in fact. No amount of road riding in the normal commuting sense would have given me these skills. I've never ridden on the track so can't comment but then most of the incdents I come across on the road I don't see much envisage happening on a race track.

Man thats tough esp when u need the money to live bascially what where your fav bikes just brought vt 500
What tires did you use etc , i rekon should give us tips dude or teach people riding training ?
or maybe Bike riders should address new car drivers before given there licence and care drivers address bi8ke riders
Hay where still all people i think anyone for robot chicken dance

Following distances are described in the rule so there are offences for not complying. Most of the rest was tips, not official rules.

Probably nil. They'd made up their minds as soon as they read "riders down" in the title. Any other information was superfluous.

mossy1200
9th August 2012, 23:07
If people dont adapt to the conditions, eg rain, road surface or fog and keep riding close in a group the risk of 2 or more coming unstuck increases. Their video shows them passing each other in the same lane etc and thats going to have risk if someone moves in the lane to avoid a hole or bump.

Getting hit by lightening while riding is an event beyond human imput. Riding beyond the conditions is a form of human era. Falling off is in itself proof that the riding exceeded the conditions. Its human to make mistakes but its also human to make excuses.
