can anyone help I decided to buy a old bike a 1981 gsx250 from a auction site I recived it a cuple days ago and went on my first ride today on doing so I noticed oil pouring from the left cover I got it home removed the cover and found it to be coming from the clutch push rod seal I wiped it away started the bike and its was coming from not only the seal but their is a metal retaiing plate (i think it called that) and i was also coming from behind the metal retaing plate that is their witch the clutch push rod goses through and the seal is in so my mainquestion is befor I send it off to a dealer is it just a seal as i could do this myself or is it a more serious problem that will require a trained mechanic as I am new to older bikes of this age thank you for any help

Is the bike blowing smoke to? Check the crankcase ventilation as this may be blocked causing the motor to over pressurise. Or the seals just stuffed.

I know I may sound dumb but this is my 1st 4 stroke bike and I am still learing about them as iv only ever had 2 strokes... where is the ventilation thing at? yes the bike blows smoke but very very little smoke and only at idle... as it is xmas and my motorbike dealer is closed for the next 2 weeks and I have work could you think of any quick temporary fixes i could use I have tryed blue gasket but after 2 minuets it started to leak again do you think it would be ok to use a silicone filler on top of the seal or any off that stuff you can get to put into the oil to stop leaks ? I am in need of my bike as I am back to work Tuesday other wise I would just wait for a new seal thanks for any help

Vent will be on the rocker cover. But if its blowing smoke then the motor will also have blowby which will be why the motor will get oil leaks all over the place. No sealer will fix a worn seal.

My guess is the motor needs a full rebuild.

The seal is an easy fix. I did one on the same model many years ago when a broken chain bent the pushrod and wrecked the seal. The old seal will lever out with a punch or screwdriver and the new seal just taps in.

Yep - Blackdog is on to it. I had exactly the same problem from a broken chain, and the seal was an easy fix (as described).
