Well sort of live....
We arrived at 8:15pm Friday night to find a gaggle of tents already set up. Everyone in good spirits as a warm summer evening and a few beers does. Injury has already taken it's toll and Henk may not ride due to an evening Roller Blade incident. The kids have already posted some good times on their bicycles this morning. More later...

Well... Henk just got back with a plaster cast from the Dept of Anotomical Corrections in Taumarunui.

They day has been good with 'qualifying' races seeing a good bunch of quick riders, we believe there may be more to come tomorrow???

We are looking at the clear weather window between 10am and 1pm tomorrow to get the main racing in.

20 buckets signed in for todays action.

That's the problem with you bike riders always finding excuses not to work on your rides, hurry up and get that sidecar finished

We awake to much wetness, forecast looks like rain for most of the morning so I think we will eat our bacon sandwiches and get on with it as soon as we can.

I will try to get a photo of Henk while he is looking his worst first thing.

Track is grippy with wets on and after some jetting problems the bike is now flying bring it on !

With Age + Injury maybe he is incapable of putting them on himself. Everyone at the track needs to pitch in to hire him a personal helper for the weekend. :innocent:

A Grade 10 lap race- started feverishly but soon settled to a bunch of 3 at the front and a bunch at the rear, Gavin, Kelly and Rick leading the pack. A few position changes mid pack with Ryan, Adrian and Malcolm. Ryan errd onto the grass at one point but regained to stay with the bunch, late in the race Adrian conceded to lapping riders inadvertantly letting Malcolm and Ryan through at the same time. The race looked done and dusted with a typical Gavin NI Series win when suddenly an engine failure on his FXR handed Kelly the lead with for an easy finish. All other participants had a good ride with no other incidents to report.

Henk didn't race as his arm doesn't seem to work at the moment.

B Grade 10 Lap- Helen lead for about 2 thirds of the race suddenly caving in to engine noises from behind to let Joshua through. Billy the Kid langished in a hard fought 3rd due to insufficient engine power but has promised to steal his Dads bike while he's not looking. All others finished happily without incident.

Thank you Mr NSR143 for an awesome weekend.
I reckon Henk's just scared to have a race with Rick on the 100's, and is finding any damned excuse to get out of it.
I did tell Mr NSR that he was keen putting his head in the tent before Henk had gotten up/dressed, but ah well, he'll learn.
I'm not convinced about the Taumaranui track, but have yet to ride it in the dry, and thought that my first idea would've been a better one (leave the bikes at home, as I think the year I didn't ride was the best one - awesome weather that weekend, whereas the last couple have had crap weather, but always a great atmosphere).

Hope Str8 and Koba make it home safely, as I somehow doubt they'll manage dry.

Worked out we need to be at Tokoroa,

Thanks to Yungatart for her assistance with the injured over the weekend (especially the incident today), and next time we see you, I will have figured out a decent punishment for you as I did see you with a flag (and forgot we had to punish you).

All other stories will remain on tour, you'll just have to come along to Toke to find out more.

Oh, did everyone look at the river today? I went and looked early on, and by the time I took Henk to show him how high it was, it was up again from that. The scenic waterfalls were pretty impressive, but I couldn't do my usual look out the window because of the dumbass.

I didn't see Skunk in those photos did I!? Also... I'm liking Adrians new leathers. Far too shiny though, I think they need a good scuffing up. Gutted I missed this but lack of money prevented me from making the trip.

Nah, wasn't Skunk, he doesn't ride, oh, yeah, Skunk was there today flagging. His twin brother was there yesterday riding ;)
You should be gutted you missed it, but we didn't miss you bwahahaha
See you at Tokoroa, Te Puke or Kaitoke.

Well my weekend obviously didn't go according to plan. Having said that for the past couple of years I've beeb touting the merits of the track at Taumarunui and telling people I go on away trips to catch up with people, indulge in a bit of alcohol inspired idiocy and if some racing happens it's a bonus. This time I missed out on the bonus but had a bloody good weekend away anyway.
Huge thanks to all the kind folk who helped patch me up on Saturday morning with bandages and painkillers and the like and again to Steve for putting the NI series on so that we have somewhere to go and catch up with like minded folk from around the country.
Shame about the weather but regardless of the pissing down rain there were some tight and entertaining battles to watch at the front and further down the pack.
Considering the fact that the weather was pretty much as predicted the turn out was higher than I expected, in fact I think possibly the biggest for an away round yet, all three NI bucket racing regions were represented as well which was good to see.
I'm pretty sure everybody that came enjoyed themselves one way or another, I must admit I was astounded by the number of kids on track on bicycles, scooters and rollerblades when there was no racing on.
I guess I get the dumbarse award for breaking myself on Friday night before the bike had made it out of the van with second place going to Clive for bringing the whole tent, except for the poles.

Photos of Friday and Saturday here

Couldn't be bothered getting the camera out Sunday in the pissing rain with a concrete arm though.

Looking forward to Tokoroa already.

Thank you Mr NSR143 for an awesome weekend.
Agreed! Big thanks to all those involved.
Race 1 was a cracking pace but a bit of an anticlimax when Gavins bike gave up,
254764
race 2 and Rick was just too good,
254766
race 3 was a nail biter as I could feel that 2 stroke all over the back of me (couldn't hear it as my own bikes sound is so intoxicating)
254765
Great weekend, great racing and the kids had a blast
254767

Roll on Tokoroa.

I had a blast, forgot how much I love riding in the wet! After I lead that race by more than half a track for almost 8 laps I then suddenly found Josh behind me (someone must have put a rocket up him!) I got the old red-mist on and started pushing too hard and reverting back to my bad racing habits, after almost having a few crashes trying to keep the young man away from me I decided that it would be best to let him past. He was riding really well and just fucked off from me once he passed. There were quite a few 'kids' racing really well this weekend, awesome to see!

Thanks to all who came along and especially Steve and his wife Paula for putting in so much time and effort. Awesome event, glad to have stayed upright! ;)

We got in about 9:15pm. A couple of stiff drinks and shower then fell in a heap. Thanks to all that came along, good racing regardless of the weather and it makes for a good weekend when everyone does the right thing and just has a load of fun. Thanks for the help keeping the site clean and to those that found space to take rubbish away. Cannot believe we didn't get a better weekend out of the time of year. Will post points results as soon as I get my act together. Thanks, Steve

Many thanks to Steve and his crew for putting this on. I had a great weekend despite forgetting tent poles, poisoning myself on Friday night and chickening out of the racing on sunday because I melt in the rain. Hard as sugar I am. My brother was over from Oz with his daughter and they were very impressed with the bucketeer spirit, so thanks for adding some fun to their holiday. Mike and Rogues saved our bacon by bringing our tent poles up on Saturday, and I hear that Rogues is going to be ok for racing at Manfeild this weekend. Great to see that you got home ok Hels. Definitely up for it next year, but I'm buying wets.

Oh yes, in all this excitement I forgot about the trek home. Only took 5.5 hours but were dressed up in so many layers + jackets and we both have numb ears but TBH was kind of fun (but not really). It was an awesome weekend away - just like the good old day's (eh Henk!) but I do think that you and Henk should both share the dumbarse award this time!

We had a great time, despite the wet....
My grandkids think you are all mad...no tent poles, roller blading in the dark and falling off and breaking bones..these apparently are not the actions of normal sensible adults (go figure). They had a great time too!
I never had a flag in my hand, that was my sister..she is older and fatter than me, easy to tell us apart;)

I did offer to share the award with Henk. He's such a trophy hog.
I know the track was grippy. I'm just over being suprised by stepping beyond the grip allowance when I start pushing harder. :brick: I will get there eventually.

I was going to say that Henk deserves it on his own because he stuffed up his own weekend, whereas you just had a Maori tent for a night, but then realised, you had a Maori tent for a night and didn't stuff up the weekend, Henk has stuffed up his racing for a couple of months, but didn't stuff up the weekend (apart from a couple of hours sitting in the hospital), so yeah, you two need to share the award.

Hey, say thanks to your brother for doing a tip run, that was awesome. I noticed him walking away with the bins, but didn't register (I really do need to learn to sleep better when we're away, maybe just get drunker). Good to see you've come out of the closet though and realised that the "wife" doesn't exist except for in your imagination bwahahaha

Ah Yungatart, but in the van I would've had some punishment for you and you would've enjoyed it (I bought two bottles of Baillies on the way back from the hospital). Actually forgot about them until I was loading up at the end of the day (hmm, don't think I've unloaded properly as didn't come across them lol).

yungatart
9th January 2012, 12:46
Now that would have been a great punishment, if I had in fact been out there waving a flag...in fact, I might have been tempted to wave a flag just to get punished, if I had known what you had in store for me

In that case I probably don't know any normal sensible adults, they sound scary anyway.

you won't figure out the limit of grip until you step over it a couple of times. Having said that, average crashes in the wet per meeting on slicks and BT39s = 3, total number of crashes in the wet on what Malcolm calls poofter tyres = 0. Not hard to figure out that they work.

Henk, that arm looks painful. Great fun up to that point, no doubt. You would have done well in the races - especially with it being wet.

I must make it to Taumarunui next year. It is a beautiful spot and camping at the track is great fun :). I will make a mental note to not try the rollerblades if I do (I survived Tokoroa - just lucky).

I hear you man. I've crashed so often on proddy tyres of various types, on various bikes in the wet that I'm over trying to ride fast and learn where the limit is. It's a great skill to have, I'm just not gonna crash again while learning it. So if I have to ride on slicks in the wet, I will be slow. I have never crashed in F3 or F2 on wets. They simplify matters so much and let me get on with enjoying the riding. I need some spare rims.
