Greetings you wonderful people.
I am back from my holiday and bursting with energy to get stuck into this event. As you all know, our old mate Tony is facing his last battle with cancer, one he is not going to win, and, in an attempt to support him I decided to get a team together to raise money for the Cancer Society.
Cancer takes too many lives, and places enormous stresses on families and friends. The Cancer Society, are simply there for people, and they do a wonderful job.
If you are like me you will also have other reasons to support this event, cancer is not picky, it effects almost everyone in some way, be it a Mother, or a Brother, or a Best Friend, or a Best Friend, or a Really Neat Man that should have been left alone, or even on a personal level. Thank you for your support.
We are registered as The L’s Angels for this event, our Team Number is 122025. The event is on March 3rd-4th at Millenium Institute of Sports and Health, Mairangi Bay, Auckland. We will need to be there at 2pm to set up our camp and get ourselves ready to go. The event kicks off at 4pm with a survivors lap, (I hope that fatty Tony will be well enough to join us for it) and continues until 9:30am the next morning. The object is to keep a baton moving around the track during that time. It is no race, though I am told some take it very seriously.
You don’t need to be sponsored per lap, or anything like that, though you can if you want to. I have counted 14 of us that are mad enough to take this challenge on, one a survivor friend that does not ride – she has 2 kids to help walk the baton if we need a rest.
It would be wonderful if we could raise $200 each, but more is also good. I know Sabine (bluerider) is making chocolate and selling it, I will be brow beating my friends and work mates to support me. What can you guys think of to do to raise some coin?
Next post will be reserved for details of gear and other stuff like;
The bank account people can deposit money into :blip:
My stupid scanner is not working (must still be on holiday) but I will scan forms etc. into this thread for you guys to use,
Fundraising Ideas,
Transport,
How we link to Maha’s ride in support of our madness,
The list is long :D
PS: Can we try to keep this one on topic and relatively seemly please, I will be referring the co-ordinator of the event to this thread as we go along.
tell me we are not running please pretty pretty?
Count me in, lots of people close to me that are effected by cancer right now, so yeah im in. My daughter is home that weekend so when we get tired she will be keen to keep the baton going.
I'm in. .
DEFINITELY KEEN! If need be, I'll run the whole thing ON MY OWN!!!:Punk::headbang::clap::cool::2thumbsup
I'm in, and I have an idea...You like where it is going?
I'm in! I will run 15 kms if you want but u need to tell me so i can train :-)
I would soo like to do the opening survivors lap to kick this off and beleive me will try my hardest to be there, and this is what I love about the kb way and riding in general, all great people.:grouphug:
Count me in. :chase: :wari:
My expressions are always interesting...
I'm in! Depending on when etc.
I'm keen,even though I'm not really sure what's happening...:D
Cool.In but will have to confirm closer due to kids. Also happy to help with organisation but after new years.
I am keen to help out with the relay on 3rd March, and when I'm not walking maybe I could be the official team massage therapist?? Am quite happy to bring my massage table down :)

I had a friend send me an email link through the Relay for Life website requesting donations (she's doing the Whangarei one)... is it possible to set up our team listing so we can do the same thing? Then we can all email-bomb our friends and families asking for moolah hehe :2thumbsup and will be able to keep track of who has raised how much I guess? at least via the website donations anyway.
I think you might need to know all our names though so you can add us to the L's Angels team list... or maybe you could use our KB names just to be different lol

Maybe we can get a couple of businesses to sponsor us in return for sticking their logos on the back of our L's angels t-shirts?

That is very possible, I need to do a bit more work is all. Two weeks at the beach makes me a bit behind the 8 ball :pinch:

So I thought it would be cool to get some Tshirts printed for the team, and maybe we could sell them too as a donation idea? And if we can get a couple of businesses on board, we could put their logos on there in return for sponsorship.
What do you think??? Not sure about the font...
Comments very welcome.

how many are we going to print (produce a surplus? we could sell them to raise fuds to non participants? )
what sizes, you and me we are both not the biggest so we should go from s/m/l/xl/xxl?
i will check with a friend today (he does his own T'shirts and see how much we would have to spend and how long this would take.
we are taking the yellow from the L plate or black T'shirts with yellow print (might be more polite on the paler ones of us)
ride tomorrow with Maha, meet at dairy flat? what time (be generous, i may take the long route)

I cant go down that track, for all I know I will still be in a friggen boot :pinch: Mind you, laps completed in that should be worth good money
I will have stuff a bit more organised by Taupo, you will be able to direct your boss to a web site that he can donate directly to our team at. The best thing about this is it is a national event, so anyone in the country can donate money, the money raised is used in the area it was dontated in.

There is room and beds and all sorts up here if things allow you to be away for a day or so.
Allowing for the above to be an amazing exception to reality...
Here is the new rule.
You WILL hug Maha very, very hard when you see him. I will have already done the same. Poor bastard will be a bit tender I am picking. Please hug in a manly fashion, got to protect your collective manliness. Make sure you add a bit extra just for me. Mark will be the conduit of the hug between us.
Lots of love marty, hug the bride gently for me and let her know she is in my prayers...

By the way, I had brunch with Tony (ynotslow) and Shafty yesterday. Frankly I'm blown away with the spirit of the man, some of us lesser mortals would have sunk into depression and negativity with the hand of cards he's been dealt. I could only hope to deal with such adversity with the dignity, courage and positivity that Tony has.
I am privileged to call Tony my friend and I'm honoured and grateful to be part of this wonderful effort in tribute to him and for the benefit of all Cancer sufferers.
To the organisers and participants, you have my deepest respect and gratitude, bless you all. x

Hey you lovely thang. This is all about life and loving, and living. Tony has been given a life sentence, he knows his time is close. As friends, we get the opportunity to love him and support him however we can while he lives the life he has! Not a bad thing to be told how valued you are, apparently it makes grown men cry...
I learned this lesson many years ago, it goes like this for me. Everyday has to be the best it can be, I tell my nearests and dearests I love them every opportunity I get. I could get taken out at any time, I dont want people I care about to not know I loved and valued them.
Hugs to you Marty, you are lovely folk too.

So, I made sure I've got the 'all clear' from work today to be there for the run, which wasn't a problem...
Only thing is, now that I'm doing more hours for the V8's and less for Traffic Management, my boss at Traffic Management isn't so keen on sponsoring my laps. So I'm open to any offers from anyone out there that is willing to support a great cause, I plan on doing the whole thing from start to finish (if my poor old tired body will let me! The mind is more than willing though!)
I haven't asked the boss at the V8's just yet, it's still a bit soon... Today was only my second full day working for them again since last year...
I'd be keen to do it for a lousy dollar per lap even! COME ON GUYS, SHOW YOUR SUPPORT!!!

Right people, who wants a shirt???
So we have 2 quotes for T-shirts, don't ask why, but for one I found out what it would be for 30 shirts, and for the other, 20 shirts.. but anyway.... here are the quotes:
Surreal in Glenfield, North Shore (http://www.screenprinter.co.nz/)
30 tshirts at $16.50 each (inc GST) = $495 total
20 tshirts at $17.83 each (inc GST) = $356.50 total
Image Group (http://www.imagegroup.co.nz/category/apparel/tshirts/)
One off fee of $45 + 20 shirts @ $18 each + GST (works out to $22.95 per shirt inc GST) = $459 total
Taking bookings now.. I need to know who wants a shirt and what size they want.
I've also put an image up of the shirts so you can choose a size - they're from blank cotton (http://www.blankcotton.co.nz)

Bulk is better...so if 30 shirts are ordered thats... $16.50 each
Likewise if 20 shirts are ordered... $17.83 each
The one off payment of $45 will be for set up I would imagine.

I think the official event kicks off at 4pm. Do you want to be official? If so let me know your "real" name so I can register you. You will get a t-shirt and a wrist band. The venue is closed for security at some time of the evening, not sure when, might be 10pm. So if you want will have to come before then, or even stay :sunny: Just flick me $20 to cover the registration costs. Then you can start fundraising too.

Hi Relayers
Please find attached a site map for the Auckland North Shore Relay. Spaces in white are unallocated so if you would like to change from your current site to an unallocated one please let me know by no later than midday tomorrow. Please note this is formatted for A3 so may not print too well on a home printer.
I’ve also attached the team list – please let me know if there are any amendments to team names, team captain names, or organisation names.
The final team captain meeting for the North Shore Relay will be at 6pm on Monday 27 February. The meeting will be held at Abilities on the North Shore - 91-95 Hillside Road, Glenfield. Plenty of parking is available. The meeting will finish between 7 and 7.30pm.
http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?q=Abilities+Group,+Hillside+Road,+Auckland&hl=en&sll=-41.244772,172.617188&sspn=31.172164,56.162109&vpsrc=0&hq=Abilities+Group,&hnear=Hillside+Rd,+Auckland+0627,+Auckland&t=m&z=16
This meeting is the team banking night where we hope to have most of the money deposited and have an idea of how much has been raised. This is also the operational briefing, and when you collect your team t shirts. If any t shirt size swaps are required please do these first within your team, after that limited swaps will be available at Relay. Any additional team members are able to register on the day at Relay.
The countdown is on – and no, we are not looking yet at the long range weather forecast!
Regards
The Events Team
We have a trackside site, I have the map here if you want to see where, toilets are not so far away, BBQ's easy reach, naughty sounding neighbours :blip:

I have made it so it will fit across the back of the Easy-Up. Once the paint is dry I will put some velco tabs on the top edge to make it easy to attach to the frame at the top. You should have seen us painting it. I was a bit sore from being on the floor mapping it out, so we painted it on top of the pool table. Had a tarp down for safety. Just as well, the paint went right through
We shared a laugh for doing something so silly on the top of an $8K pool table

Had a Team Captains meeting last night and all systems are GO!
I need a whiteboard and marker, anyone able to provide one?
I have a bag of T-shirts and wrist bands for our team.
Couple of important things. If you have any money to bank, please make sure it is in the bank before Saturday, bring your banking slips with you on the day so I can colate them.
We need to meet at Millenium Institute at 12midday to set up. I have a tent that will be set up for you to store your gear in so it is not in the way. Bring some cash with you, there is food/drink available at the venue if you dont bring anything with you. It is a BYO event, so if you wan to bring a beer I will have a chilly bin available to keep it in.
The opening ceremony is at 3:40, and the Relay kicks off with a survivors lap at 4pm. Once ALL the survivors are finished their lap of honour then we start our Rlay, probably at 4:30. There is a candle light ceremony at 8.45pm to remember those lost to Cancer and then back to walking. The Relay finishes at 10am.
The site is closed to visitors from 10pm till 7am, so if you want to stay and are not registered you will need to register on the day, $20 gets you a T-shirt and wristband, AND a cooked breakfast the next morning :sunny:
There are prizes to win :2thumbsup
Best themed team, best costumes, most laps (pro rata) so any size team can win, also spot prizes for Sun Smart etc.
Can you please PM me your contact phone numbers just in case the event gets cancelled or something else goes wrong.
The event is Smokefree.

Greetings all.
I will be printing all the Cancer Relay threads this Thursday 2nd March. They will then be all bound together into one book of sorts. I'll take it down to Wellington on Friday and it'll go into the baton for it's journey up the country. It'll then be presented along with the other bits and pieces.
The reason I am telling you all this comes to you in two parts:
1) It mightn't be a bad idea to go through any posts you've made and edit or remove anything you don't want to be permanently recorded. I can't think of anything that actually needs changing, but that's up to you. All that we ask is that you don't go crazy and end up changing the past, so to speak, and ruining the flow of the thing.
2) Please feel free to add any further personal messages of support.
Once again, anything that's still in here on Thursday will go to print, and obviously the opposite is true of anything not added to the thread by then. See most of you Saturday.

Have done at least 1 survivors lap at either taranaki or palmy north relay for life since 2004,and my opinion was and is doing that lap was best part of having had cancer.
These last few months shows me the people who have come into my life have been inspirational to me,words astound me from the respect shown to me by you lot. Many people die wondering what have they achieved in life, same here but my life has been fulfilled.

There are very few words that describe exactly how special people like you are, Tony, because you are such a rarity on this world of ours. Even through all the hardship and suffering you've endured, you've always been a fighter, a happy face, a great guy to be around. Admittedly, I haven't had a great deal of time to get to know you as well as others, but what time I have spent with you, I've greatly enjoyed every single second of it. You can be so proud of who you are, how you've inspired everyone around you, how you've brought out the best in so many of us. I can honestly say I've never met anyone like you before in my life. Someone so kind, caring, compassionate, honest, sincere, dedicated, and fervent about living life to the full. You amaze me. That's about as much as I can explain it.
So, with that said, I WILL BE COMING UP for the run this weekend, another very good friend has offered to kindly let me borrow his vehicle (so I don't have to ride and bugger my ankle even more) so that I can make it, so that I can show everyone just how much you've inspired me!

L's Angels
A group of motorcyclists that ride together with a focus on Learner and Newbie riders. We are like the Hells Angels (not) a lot of our members are on L plates. Our members are spread from Kaitaia to Whanganui (so far), and anyone can join. Sadly, one of our members is facing down cancer for the 3rd time. He is not well enough to join us. We thought this was a good way to support our friend.
Maha (Mark) & Mom (Anne) started L's Angels. We are supporting Ynot Slow (Tony). Our team members are, in no particular order;
Mom and a survivor friend, Newhere and her daughter, OCD legend , Timmeh :P , Hellzie , blue rider, Phreak, Scorpio girl, nathan white, Virgil, The Singing Chef, the list goes on...
We are part of an online forum. Members of our community are taking part in this relay by riding north from Wellington on Saturday. The ride will be carrying "batons". These batons will contain messages of support for Tony and his family that will be added to as the ride progresses. The ride leaves the Cenotaph in Wellington at 7am Saturday morning, splitting into 2 groups at Sanson and travelling up the West coast via Taranaki to Te Kuiti, and up the East coast to Napier (the baton transfer there will take place at the Relay in Napier) to Taupo and onto Te Kuiti. Along the way the rides will stop and members will join in, as others peel off to go home. There are members that are riding all the way, some part of the way.
A group will ride south from Auckland to meet the ride at Te Kuiti. They will then ride north to arrive at Millenium Stadium at 8pmish. Some will stay and walk with our team.
We all have different reasons for taking part in this event, we have survivors amongst us, some have lost family and friends, but this one is for Tony. Kia kaha Tony.

Well where do I start, I made what was at the time a brave decision for me, to go on a Motorbike learner ride to the Cape, One of the best decisions i've ever made, What an amazing group of people our L's Angels are. Amongst them on this particular trip was a wee slip of a man traveling alongside Mom in the support vehicle, His name, Tony. I got to sit with you Tony at Hohoura Tavern, what a beautiful place to sit and chat and get to know one another, however briefly. You told me about your family and your Brother, we laughed and laughed a bit more. It is an enduring memory for me, one I shall cherish forever. Meeting you has enriched my life and touched my Soul. You are sooo kind and strong and brave and funny. I missed the Taupo ride would have loved to catch up again there. You have touched the hearts of many, one only has to read these threads to realise that, I'm glad to be one of them:love: When our time comes may we ride on the wings of Angels:love: Thank you for being you:love: Jo.xoxoxo

The Relay will go ahead in rain, however if there are strong winds on site and safety becomes an issue we may make the call to postpone or cancel Relay. This decision will be made at 10am on Saturday morning, and the phone numbers 308 0240 / 308 0169 will be updated with the relevant information. It is a good idea to have your team members mobile numbers, or make sure they have your mobile number, so that you can update them.
Dependent on conditions on the day and the forecast, if we need to postpone Relay the likely scenarios are to either postpone Relay until later that evening, or until 6.30 on Sunday morning. If we postpone until Sunday morning then we will start with the Big Breakfast and continue the Relay until 12 midday. If we decide to postpone, this decision will not be made lightly and will be made in the best interests of everyone’s safety.
Please let it not be 6.30 Sunday morning :pinch:

Righto! Ya'll have until 1pm and then I'm doing the printy thing.
Best (or rather most time efficient) method I can find is simply whack the settings up to 40 posts and view it as printable and job done. Doesn't look great though... What I think I will do is grab all the text and then sit here Alt-Tabbing between this and some porn and spend the afternoon "formatting" (as I like to call it) on MS Word. If anyone has a better idea for the actual method of putting this together then please quickly let me know - I'd rather it didn't involve unfamiliar software and anything that would be a stretch for a toddler with a bit of pooter knowledge. Otherwise I'll just plug away and get it done. And then I'll do this job afterwards while I feel mellow.
(And I'm assuming if you're involved enough to be writing last minute messages you've also subscribed to all the threads, so I won't post this everywhere so I don't have to delete it from everywhere come 1pm. So there.)

Some days make you really glad you got out of bed. Seems to me to be becoming a more and more frequent occurance since I started kicking around with yous fullas. But just now something has really made my day.
I was at the Glenfield Mall (which should be enough to make you all jealous, but it gets even better!) and went to talk to Kevin at Inkworks to find out how much it was going to sting me for all the printing. I explained a bit about what we were doing and why, a bit about Tony and his situation and what we all think of him, and finally about what I needed doing print wise (roughly 200 pages of black & white and bound). Before I got to the bit about asking for a good price and that I would supply the paper, he jumped in with "Yep, I'm happy to do that for you for free as sponsorship". I just about fell over, as I would have been chuffed with just a good price - especially considering they are a couple running a small business, not some huge outfit that can afford such things without blinking. Also, although I have had one thing printed there months ago he doesn't know me at all. So printing, paper and binding is costing absolutely zero, courtesy of the wonderful Kevin & Belinda van den Berg at Inkworks, Level 3, Glenfield Mall.
If you ever need any printing done (I've had them print my online workshop manual for the CBR) please make an effort to send business their way - and say why. And if you're passing, maybe just stop and say thanks (I have about 486 times already!).
Isn't humanity just awesome sometimes?

And in turn, this has made my day. I have just flicked him an email to personally thank him. What a very generous thing to do, especially given the current economic climate. Thanks for doing this too, it will make a wonderful thing for Tony to keep close, and for his family to have.
WB covered and I'll bring an assortment of stuff which ya can choose ta use or not (markers post its etc). If nobodys able to do pickup then rest assured i'll get it there...NEK MINNIT on the news Crazy Biker creates havoc with WB on the motorway...i can see it all now. Either that or someones Bemaz goin for a joy ride courtesy of my unique set of 'SKILLS' shall we say.

Just got finished with the formatting and such. 190 pages/45,000 words. I had to laugh when MS Word farted and popped up with "This document contains an excessive amount of spelling and grammatical errors" and promptly stopped spellcheck. Hyuck hyuck no shit....
Hyuck hyuck no shit....
Reminds me of a dear friend who left school unable to read or write. She taught herself to read and spelled everything phonetically. When she finally got a PC and found Word, she was unable to use spell check as it could never suggest anything to replace what she had typed

Just caught up to date on the latest posts, I have a big piece of plastic cardboard stuff that'll act as a mean whiteboard, was intending on bringing it along. It's pretty big, and doesn't matter if it gets destroyed or anything over the weekend.
Let me know if anyone thinks of anything else I might be able to bring along!
