so if I went to akihabara, looking for LEDS , what would I be looking for, to be able to gro lettuce all year round in my office would be awesumanal .... pity I dont smoke as , i could be rich ..... rich I tell you

1 watt luxeon star modules red and blue (not sure on wavelengths but could look them up again) in a ration of 1 blue for every 8 red from what I remember... google it, there's even a few youtube vids... wonder if a USB version is possible :)... pity I have to work for a living, could have some fun otherwise.

Added Linky (http://www.591198.com/p-led-plants-growing-light-2485350.html)... gives a kind of idea and I believe the key part is getting the right resistors. Will add link to the board I used for testing. Can't remember what the thing is called , but one of these was handy as hell for piddling about with different light configs:

Short answer, the absorbance maxima of chlorophyll (a) are 430-440nm (blue) and 660-680nm (red) athough environmental conditions do play a part. The peaks are quite sharp, so anything much outside these ranges will do fuck all for your plants.

A big arse array of bright LEDs will make for some expensive lettuce, though, unless they are very cheap in Japan. Other bulb types are often used and are a bit cheaper.

but other bulb types are more expensive to run I believe? I was using superbright bulbs but think they were only half watt, if that, and didn't really seem to do anything... possibly coz of the orange inclusions taking up red space, but likely coz the bulbs were crap for purpose.

Eh? Orange inclusions taking up red space... how does that work? They are different "spaces" in the spectrum. Orange can't crowd out red, the plant will just ignore (reflect) the bits it doesn't use.

In essence I changed the ratio of red to blue based on information from a website that said that orange was beneficial and gave a different ratio. So the orange ones took up space that shoulda been red. Either way the LEDs were poop, possibly because I didn't setup a reflector unit (not enough $$$).

documentary "THE SEVEN SISTERS" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-7wdnv_EiM) & youll see that this planet was been divided up since ages ago. By the Cartel of the Seven largest oil companies. Some of the worst atrocities & civil unrest in the last century has been "made " for their direct advantage. And still is. By people we elected.Who either have worked for them directly (Rumsfeld, Cheney, Rice etc etc).Or indirectly:shifty:

Now Im not suggesting that we dont need either chemicals/oil...its all oil init, but that there is a huge cost to these technologies & anyone who points these things out is then promptly labeled such & such by the media & that is all it takes to make anyone who advocates these causes to be discredited, & before they can even get to the point they have to endlessly quantify & defend their position....
Honestly I dont think these problems are that big....& with seven billion people working on it,I dont think it'd take long if we all chip in.
I really think we need to rethink the concept of Democracy & we need to come up with a new rule book pretty fuckin quick.

Just finished the series. That was damned interesting and I gotta say I shed a few tears... You're right, we need a new rule book coz it's only going 1 way.

Face it..we're all dead in the long run...

Faced that a looooooooong time ago :) and have no fear of dying... I'd rather not hand a pile of shit over to the next generation... especially one that's dictated by banks and corporates (especially oil) and war mongers and all for money at any cost, which essentially means death so that people can get rich. No drama in saying that, it's one of them thar facts of life, just like death, but a fact that is avoidable if people decided they didn't want to play such a stupid fucked up game... and as completely unthinkable as it sounds, I really really really don't want to live life that way... and I reckon the majority of people don't either.

I dare say we won't be seeing this sort of evolution in energy supply until the seven sisters have bleed the world of its oil and us of all our money.

I dunno why you guys worry about the Seven Sisters (the main oil companies) so much. After all they have been known and written about since the early 1970s when I was at high school. In fact from a business point of view they are boring. Steady as she goes no excitement no drama no big upside. By comparison Microsoft, International Business Machines, and Cisco Systems have been the go-to companies over the past 30 years. Computing gives control over banking, credit rating, employment history yadda yadda power over peoples lives.

Besides if the Seven Sisters are really that strong, join them. You can buy shares in every one with votes and rights and dividends and heaps of long term steady growth. What's not to like??

LOL either one of two things will happen:

1. The big oil companies will fade away much as other giant companies have in the past. Pan Am, Enron, Standard Oil, TWA, RCA, railway companies, ship builders, the list is long. The oil companies are trying to reposition themselves as "energy companies" getting into solar etc but they are so large they are struggling to adapt.

2. Or some of the strongest companies in the world (which may include an oil company or two) will become so powerful they exceed the jurisdiction of sovereign nations. Science fiction has long predicted that world and space colonies will be governed by corporations. So far, governments still win and companies fail. So far...

Secret deals made at trade negotiations....:devil2:
its "some" of these deals being made that'll no doubt make alot of problems harder to solve.:weep:
