Just do a system restore to a previous day where you had no problems.

Shhhh...Don't say it so loud. I just wanted to see if there was any better solution to me placing WinXP back on.

Looks like I will just do a reformat...life as a crouton.

I had a similar problem when I installed SP2 and my system was running Zone Alarm. Apparently sometimes, but not always. Don't know if this leads you anywhere of use.....

You could be on to something. I don't use Zone alarm, but I do use Nortons Internet security, as well as the on board firewall. I will disable the onboard. Will update if fixed.

Ramius: just disabling norton internet security wont tell you if that is the problem especially if it is damaged. Symantec has a NIS removal tool if you have a problem removing it.

Hell, I would never get rid of Norton, I was meaning I will disable the onboard one.

Sometimes you have to remove it to see if it is the problem, I am guessing you have the copy and No. to put it back on. I would do that before formatting and reinstalling.

BTW what is the onboard firewall, I am thinking your talking about the xp firewall?

Yeah, XP firewall is what I am referring to.

No need to worry about back ups, I have back up of back up, however, I managed to lose Schindlers List!!!

Try reseting any scripting settings in IE, reset all IE defaults, Yes IE does intergrate with windows explorer.

I had a system where no explorer windows would view correctly, uninstalled NAV, worked fine, ran the NAV removal tool and reinstalled NAV.

But then it could be sun spots in the wrong place

Hmm...Will do the IE reset. Not too sure if the Nortons thing will work though, as the issue was there before I had put Nortons on.

Off to bed now Ramius, see if I can scratch up anything tomorrow.

Sometimes a reinstall is a good cleanout, have fun and don't cry too much, water can have a detrimental affect.

Tried it one time, took 10 minutes to blow with a cup of water on it.

by techno geek does that mean I gotta listen to techno? I do by the way.

suggestion:
delete every thumbs.db on your computer then download powertools from MS in particular tweakui and modify the settings for the size and quality of the thumbnails. they may have gotten corrupted.

Sounds like a go, could also be a file association problem???

There is a known issue with Divx and some Codecs running (or not running) on XPsp2. So depending on what is in the folder you are trying to look at when changing from details to thumbnails, this could be the problem.

The easiest fix would be to remove sp2.

Yeah, problem is SP2 was on the install disk (loaded with XP) normally I just put XP Pro on, but that disk is down in Wellington, so I am stuck with what I have and that is XP Pro Corp SPII

Check for spyware?? MS antispyware tool gets most things.

Sometime hardware drivers may not be compatable with SP2, try updating video drivers, had to do that in the past.

might be worth a crack.

Says it helps me get things done
Everywhere every one, reinstalling windows!

if you class 'most' as more then 50% I would have to say yes.
but its got a long way to go.

its worth a try I guess (video drivers) although I doubt it.

how did the previous suggestion get on?

Norton's has been taken off, no avail.
Video drivers are updated.

Some MPEG's don't work now either, its not just the thumbnails. I will have to go back to standard XP.

CPU dependent... lol 'okay'.
Considering a mobile Athlon XP is merely a lower voltage variant (usually) of the desktop version (identical archicture/specs etc) there is no reason why it shouldn't work. They simply make a trace on the CPU conductive to ID it as a mobile. Blame microsoft for this one.

And I also use the same 'desktop' version of that CPU with sp2...as do many people with no troubles at all.

Don't put up with that bs.. there has to be a way of fixing it.. drivers/modes etc. Try disabling stupid bloated winxp themes and making it look like win2k.

Resorted back to reinstalling windows (The Disk had XP Pro written on it, and I was told it was standard) Reinstalled and hello, it is SP2. As soon as I put the drivers on for my mobility chip I will get the same problem. So, I will just wait until I can get my clean little hands on Pro standard and do it all again. As at the moment, it will affect how my Video camera interacts with the PC.
