View Full Version : Question for bikers without cars

I understand there are a few people out there who have only bikes, and no cars in their household.
What do you do for shopping? And general running around?

The missus might be selling her car and getting a little scooter, and the mind boggles how one does a weeks worth of shopping with only two bikes two ferry it home.

Um more trips to the supermarket, I use panniers and an tramping pack, and remember put your eggs at the top ;)

I got rid of my car years ago and for the odd time I really need one I take a cab or borrow a mates, even getting the odd taxi is far cheaper than paying warrant and rego and insurance for a car that doesn't get a lot of use as i'd much rather ride my bike. : )

A large top box fitted to the carrier. A custom mounting frame may be needed for this. But it's no big issue. And scooters are cheap to run ... two trips ...

Double Packs plus tank bag plus back pack = job done...that will allow you to sit and play on KB.
Thank me latter.

Walk every day/2nd day to the supermarket because my thighs are getting fucking fat :sunny:

If I do get shit, I just use my old schoolbag and fill that up. Doesn't hold much, but I don't shop for a whole week as I'll eat it all in 4 days.

I carry small things in the seat cowl, bigger things in my backpack and even bigger things on the fuel tank. I once carried a 10kg bag of chicken feed home on the fuel tank.

Crotch rockets are awesome for carrying things on because the large, flat fuel tank has enough room to fit some pretty big things, and I can keep it into place with my elbows while cornering.

i tie an empty beer crate to the back, and then hang any extra bags off the handle bars. Fit heaps of food in there :D (as well as a 5L jerry can)

The Feb 22 earthquake killed our car, so for about a month we had only the motorbikes and scooter to get around on. Surprisingly do-able: we were trapped in thouse for a good part of that though, but a scooter with a topbox and a pack holds a shitload of stuff (say easy a weeks worth). Plus the roads were so shitty that a motorbike to get around on was ideal

Big ass backpack. Get a good one and you can fit 2 dozen beers in there. I've also carried vacuum cleaners, computer towers, speakers by sticking them on the top of the tank and balancing them with my knees as I go round corners. Where there's a will, there's a way. Unfortunately I have a car now.

Exactly! Depending on the day you can get 3 large pizzas delivered for $23, that can last for a couple of days and then you put the box in the bin, too easy. Funnily enough, being a chef I never cook at home, so pizza is my sustenance.

If she's gonna get a scooter, then make it a Honda Gyro Canopy with a bigger than normal box, your problems are therefore solved.

Yes, I rode one, for some years, bloody useful actually, surprising the amount you can cram into one. Down side, is they only do about 35km/h :-(

Na don't trust the fat ones, they are too busy sticking their fingers in everyones food to "taste" it and not actually doing any work, whereas us skinny chefs are working hard trying to feed the fat pricks lol.

For the frozen stuff ... a top box and a bag of ice ... is good for the long commute home in summer (help keeps the beer cold too)

some scooters have storage space under the seat. if I didnt live withing walking distance from the supermarket I'd probably just take the bus, train or taxi.

Ya can balance a dozen big bottles (none of them pussy stubbie things for this boy!) in the box on top of the petrol tank, into your old army shoulder bag you can fit two one-and-a-half litre bottles of coke and a 1.5 litre Jack Dniels then you can stuff two big bags of Bluebird salt'n'vinegar chips down the front of your jacket....oh, GROCERIES you say...:pinch:

In 11 years of bike pilotry, I owned a car for 2 weeks once. Damned fool of a thing.

Shopping is easy. Big back pack and the tank bag. If I need to haul anything bigger than the bike itself, I can usually pinch a truck from work. Girls whinge about getting cold or scared on the back of the bike ? Easy sorted. "So I'll see you there then" :)

1. Large top box and panniers on my GSX and my wife has a double Ventura pack on her Hornet.

2. Shop more often.

recently became car less, by choice.
I can easily get 2 weeks supplies in my tramping back pac,
being single does mean a smaller buy up.
Bread is the only bummer, any ideas for not getting it crushed when in a back pack?

Buy a real back pack...
I have a small tramping/hiking bag that I've used for years. I always stick a loaf of bread on top or in the front pocket (yeah, it's big enough). I only go shopping in the car now because the bike's all broken in the garage.
For me, a car is almost pointless.

Order all the piss, fags and sausages that you want. Nothing better than having a box of piss delivered to your door.

No, but I did have a dog. He munched his way through 7 big tins of jellymeat and some biscuits every week.
I had to plan so as not to need to buy toilet paper, spuds, or other bulky items on dogfood day.

Mostly I use the moped for shopping, the Suzuki has a hook below the handlebar which will take a bag (or two?).
That with the underseat storage is all I need. Then again, I usually go to the shop more than once a week.

Minor purchases, like bread, milk, and wine, I can do on the bike using a satchel or laptop bag.

Once, many years ago, I used a back pack to transport half a dozen big bottles of beer 16k home. Both arms went numb before I got there.
