He's one of mine. He got nailed turning turning right by a car turning right out of the side road he was turning into.
The car was in a give way. My man was on his own bike on the way home from work.
Driver said Sorry Mate I Didn't See You.
Arse.
Broken tib and nasty degloving. Thanks God for good gear, or he'd have been a lot worse.

I think it was MSTRS or similar that reckoned drivers involved in a SMIDSY incident should have 'RETARD' painted on their car..
I reckon just making them drive only cars painted fluoro pink would suffice...:angry2:

I was down there a couple of weeks ago visiting the kids and was just about taken out twice a few hundred metres from the Station. I'm sure its not SMIDSY but rather SIDC (Sorry I Don't Care). Then I made the mistake of riding in the City, Jeez I thought Filtering in Wellington was dangerous :brick: the lack of care displayed by some drivers was shocking.

So those who trot out "i did not see you" as a this reason for not giving way to a motorcyclist will now be required to have an eye test and redo the drivers licence test? yeah right, sorry about your guy but those who use this as a reason for not giving way should not have a licence, they are blind.

He's going to, don't worry. Careless Driving Causing Injury, as is entirely appropriate. The crash gets dealt with by the Popo who attended, the victim gets the same rights as everyone else, the offender gets treated the same as anyone else. Fair to say that I'll be making sure that all the i's get dotted and the t's get crossed. I do that with any motorbike crash anyway, coz I give a shit.
Thing is, no matter what happens to the offender, my mans leg is still munted.

For which, thank you.
The British Police distinguish between "didn't look" and "looked but didn't see". Both of which rate higher than speed as a cause of accidents.
Not sure if that distinction applies in this country.
Then again I regularly see "Looked but don't care" on my commute.
Variation on a theme; yesterday 1.30PM ish I followed a red Mazda 3, EWA488? through Fitzroy, the driver (male) was reading what looked to be a magazine or travel brochure in his lap. When we got to the Waiwhakaiho bridge he relaxed even more and picked up his cellphone and started texting or dialling while on the move in traffic. I was pleased I was behind him on the bike and not in front of him.
Hope your man heals quickly :doctor:

Wouldn't it be nice if fuckwits like this got to pay a higher ACC levy into the future since they contributed to higher costs...
Oh I forgot - its a blameless system
Christchurch is a very frustrating place to ride/drive at present. The amount of roadworks and poor diversion planning mean the traffic density is well above what poor ChCh drivers are used to.

I'm sure it does. Thing is both are perfectly normal human behaviours, so while it's usual to villify drivers causing incidents which result in injuries they're no different to any one of us. We all have such lapses, our brains take shortcuts which allow us to handle the huge amount of data we process.
Interesting related piece in the paper this AM: http://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/wellbeing/6628224/Unhappy-brains-are-better-brains
Then again I regularly see "Looked but don't care" on my commute.
I've rarely seen it. The only one I can recall was a Van loaded with guys on a PD detail, on the Hutt motorway. I was passing on the right lane, in reasonably heavy traffic when he pulled out with me exactly beside him, obviously hadn't seen me. I throttled up right onto the bumper of the car in front and eyeballed him through the drivers door window. He did a double-take, registered I was there, sort of shrugged his shoulders and kept comming. I couldn't go past, there wasn't room, so I hit the picks, hard. My left handgrip touched the back of the van a split second before my right thigh flicked a WRB post and the whole back of the bike drifted left a bit. I distinctly recall being puzzled by that last bit, was only when the back wheel landed again did I realise it'd been inches off the ground.
There's no doubt in my mind that if I'd been on the dirt bike rather than the Buell I'd be dead. To this day I can't understand how he thought what he did was anything short of premeditated murder.
RC, my best to your man, let us know if there's anything we can do, eh?

that would be a great idea - anyone in any crash who said they didnt see the person should have to do this at their own expense

it's a shame that we cant get/don't see the MC popo on the Hutt motorway during peak period,,, I know they have different 'views' on lane splitting.... however, I see so many bloody cagers driving and texting/talking on cell phones it makes the law a mockery... now I wonder how much that'd change f a popo suddenly appeared beside the car with a quiet 'pull over'???

Pity is, he's one of the best riders in the Police, and he is very sympathetic to bikers. That sympathy won't be back until a lot later in the year.

One of the ironies is that the BMW boots he had on were the work supplied ones. They contained the injury, and prevented it from being worse. They got cut off.
The BMW pants he had on also helped contain the nastiness, and cordura got embedded in the wound. They were also cut off.
The rest of his gear was fine, and was all personally owned.
Now, THAT's how to crash. Sacrifice all the company supplied gear, and protect your own.

Trouble is, sitting around rubbing each other's back and going "There, there" teaches no-one anything.
What can we learn from this thread?
1. Identify potential hazards and give them the required degree of concentration.
2. Perform a turn at an intersection at a speed that allows for evasive action.
3. Perform a turn across the front of another vehicle in a wide enough arc that maximises the space between you and that vehicle.
4. Look at the driver and try to work out what they're thinking. (The leaning forward over the steering wheel with head flopping from side to side is a dead giveaway that they haven't seen you).
5. Be prepared to use your horn if you suspect the driver hasn't seen you. (Contrary to popular belief, the horn is there as a warning device - not a "Fuck you" device).
6. Be prepared to break off the turn if the car so much as sneezes.
7. Learn to compensate for the inadequacies of other road users 'cos regardless of whether you're in the right or not, you're the one most likely to be hurt.
8. Holding hands in a circle and singing Kumbayah does fuck all for anyone.
9. Katman doesn't do sympathy very well.

I saw one of your team on Friday while traveling home from work, he was standing beside his work ride on Idris Rd, and as usual, I got a friendly biker wave back as I cruised past.
Twas me Weely. I'm the good looking one with the stripes. Stop by next time.

Never good to read or hear about these sorts of things Rastus. Well wishes to your man and his family, hoping for a good recovery from this incident. Always brings home the implications of our choice of transportation these threads, reminding us all what we need to do to keep it rubber side down and things shiny.
Hope he gets a big box of doughnuts to eat as he recovers!

I did actually think of stopping in case he had bike trouble...then I thought "BMW"...nah NOOO chance!
Had to sell the guzzi due to the smashed shoulder (courtesy of that drunk driving 4x4 last winter), so I have a new ride for you to have a gander over ;) (I had to buy a "lounge suit"...or "according to the doc's"...give up riding to allow it to heal better :shit::no:)
Will keep an eye out for ya & try to "catch up: :niceone:(but they way you filter through traffic...that may be difficult!:killingme)
Ride safe mate and keep us all updated on your mans progress :doctor:
ps: As for red lights...struth...I even pause & double check when they turn green! (learn't THAT lesson many moons ago)

Actually I met him recently - he seemed normal. Well, almost
Then he posts the sort of stuff he has in this thread... :brick:

Seriously, if anyone is offended by what I've said in this thread they're in desperate need of hardening the fuck up.

5. Be prepared to use your horn if you suspect the driver hasn't seen you. (Contrary to popular belief, the horn is there as a warning device - not a "Fuck you" device).
My Nautilus is a "wake the fuck up device" and it is quite effective on the rare occasions it is used.

Most people who get a blast of the horn whether it's to wake them the feck up or warn them, really take offence at it though.

There's a big difference between a short toot on the horn and trying to force the button through to the other side of the switchblock.

How would you know how much force is being applied to someone elses horn? My scooter has an incredibly sensitive horn, and I'm not shy about giving it a quick poke if someone else is endangering me.

My comment was a sad indictment of New Zealand drivers that act like that, but also what GM said is true.

There's plenty of sad indictments on New Zealand road users (motorcyclists included).
At the end of the day, I believe the average road user can tell the difference in intent between a short quarter of a second toot and a 5 second blast.
I'd rather use my horn and be seen than avoid using it in case I offended someone.

Even when it's a short warning toot most drivers get overly upset. It's bloody crazy.

I appreciate your message KM but instead of everyone 'hardening the fuck up', perhaps you could 'soften the fuck up' when delivering the message on the back of someone getting hurt or worse. Dude, it's not what you say that offends people, it's just the way you say it. Just saying ...

All good things to think about, and I'm sure the gentleman laying in the hospital bed is doing just that. But you have to look at your communcation style dude, from the way you post it would seem like you want to be be the guy at the top of the cliff saying "would never have happened if you had listened to me, you did this wrong and that wrong....." OR you sincerely want people to consider what you are saying and be better riders, but lack the communication skills to get your message across without sounding like a self important, supercilious ass.
If you truly care about rider safety, both your own and other bikers, then isn't worth taking the time to communicate your thoughts in a more engaging and positive way?

where did you get that idea? He sets out to by challenging and upsetting and uses negativity to achieve this. Look at this thread, an off duty cop who is trained to be observant gets bowled in a SIDMY and we are meant to accept that he has better situational awareness skills than a bike cop! Really? and if a bike cop gets blind-sided by a dozzy bastard we as commuter riders or Sunday riders or what ever are meant to be able to do better. The only poster to try to attribute blame was Katman, the rest were just concerned for the downed riders well being with blame less irrelevant at this stage.
Ups to Katman for starting a separate thread on situational awareness and this si where his comments should have been in the first place.
Feel for the downed rider.

Being human IS used too often to excuse any sort of failure that leads to carnage, big or small, victim or perpetrator. Trouble is, we ARE human and we do make mistakes.
Even the best security systems have blind spots, despite the best efforts of trained specialists who design/install them. If a PTW cop can get taken out, anyone can. Including Katman, who eats, shits and breathes just like the rest of us.
All we can do is to make sure any mistakes we do make are inconsequential.
Best wishes to the injured cop.

time and place KM, this isnt it. your lack of finesse is the reason for your crusade falling on deaf ears.
But he absolutely has a point, and I know for a fact, that what he speaks of, has happened...the ones that wont to listen, will never listen.
And there is no better time/place to deliver a safety message than in a thread of this nature.

And we keep having these threads as each new tragedy occurs. So FUCKEN often that we are in danger of becoming totally inured to them and not even try to dispense the message of personal responsibility.

Personally, whenever one of these threads come up and i see katman is involved, I always have a look mainly for the humour and the ott reactions of some posters:violin:. If i see a "safe riding" thread I don't even look cos they are probarbly not entertaining at all, so thanks katman for both entertaining and informing me.
Keep it up.

If said driver knows they had fucked up ... they take even the short blast on the horn as a personal insult to/of their driving abilities. As with most electrical devices ... it''s either on or off. The amount of pressure on the buttom does not change volume.
The one time of the day when all attention is required ... is near the end. Be it at, or near the end of your ride/work shift, when your proximity to getting home makes you relax a little. The things you need to do when you get there (or before) taking precident in your head.
