Do you have a scooter complex??

I ride a scooter to work from my home in Eastbourne to work in Petone, 10km of nice winding roads 70km area :nya:

Anyway there are quite a few other motorbikes that I pass because they are more patient or they are just happy to dordle but when I pass them they seem to have this instant race reaction haha they usually go flying past on a straight then wobble around the corners so I promptly pass them back.

Its very entertaining!!

Would you be upset by a scooter passing you? If I were on a big bike I think id just laugh

I was having a yak to one at the lights yesterday...commenting on how quickly he got through the traffic  (compared to my bus lol)
turned out it was a 250cc scooter/bike that he had ridden all round NZ :scooter:...good sort!

I just wish they would wear proper gear! (most sadly don't!)
...other wise Ive got no probs with them (owned a coupke myself)

...Just dont ask me to wave back at them

Nope, that's Nigel you are thinking of. He's much bigger and hairier than me. He has a similar situation to me, although he has some use of his left arm.

That's called a carpark isn't it? A racetrack for scroters.

I was menaced by a scroter a little while ago, he was following quite happily and I do NOT hang around to fuck spiders when filtering...
Pulled in and let him go. Fooken giggled my arse off over the whole thing. Someone who knew what they were doing and it doesn't matter if it's a big bike or a scroter, they get let through.

When I lived on t'other side of town, there used to be a scooter would use the cycle lane to filter to the front of the lights. Then one day a car in the line pulled left just as he came past...scooterboy ended up on the footpath. He stopped doing it after that funnily enough.

Whilst I hate riding something with my kees knocking together, the only thing that annoys me about scooter riders are those that insist on riding their Nifty Fifty on the motorway. Dangerous as IMO.

Fuckin dodgy!

Part of the reason in Wellington there is only a very small section that is labelled 'motorway'. From Ngauronga to the terrace tunnle is our only motorway, because it's the only way into town from the hutt. It's illegal to ride a registered moped on motorways, or bicycles for that matter.

. . .. It's illegal to ride a registered moped on motorways, or bicycles for that matter.

That's an interesting point. When they changed the regos over, groan 15years back or so to comphewter they seemed to make all 50cc things Mopeds. hence my RG50 no longer needed a WOF despite having needed one every year preceeding. Oh well, whatever. But i used to ride it on the Motorway, heck I took it to the Cold Kiwi 6 times despite having an 1100 in the garge. it would pull an indicated 118 in perfect conditions with rider under the paintwork. Of course that lined up with 105 real kph, but just fine for traffic.

Only time I rode a Scroter, a Phewgott scroter no less was in an endurance bucket race at the miniscule tyre lined Slipway. Think me & Mark H came 3rd, but only through his skill, not mine, the whole -throttle on, brakes-on- apex- release brakes- thing while the jolly little thing tried to fall over scared me silly.

Ah - thays why they pass you. They are not worried about it being a scooter at all. My guess is that they just see the Peugeot label and think "fuck - I'd better get in front of that before it explodes and showers the road in hollendaise sauce n stuff."

Mopeds are not allowed on motorways, so they made all scooters mopeds.

I counter your interesting point with another. Your RG does not actually meet the requirements of a moped. There is a maximum KW output attached to the designation. The RG will be well over. If a cop challenges you (because he was bored or summat), it is your burden to prove it should be so registered, if you fail, hello tickets.

More important than the kW limit (it's 2 iirc), is the requirement that it be physically incapable of over 50kmhr, thought I'm pretty sure 60kmhr gets rounded down, I don't think 105kmhr would...

F5 Dave
3rd April 2012, 16:48
Hey I wasn't the one to register it as a Moped, it was an administrative cock up as it was first registered as a motorcycle, a 50cc one, which was a separate & cheaper class. Either way it was sold 10 years ago now, unlikely to still be going.

I have been riding my 125cc scooter for a while now and while I like its nimbleness and storage capacity, psychotic drivers (when the see it) see a scooter and think "Oooooh some schoolgirl on a 50, a legitemate target". A short angry middle aged man then gets incandescent with rage. It doesnt happen as much riding the street triple.

This all depends (as usual) on the vehicle.

The Vespa GT300ie is good for 140kph and is one of the best fun urban vehicles there is - The big Gileras are also a hoot.

It's actually a lot more fun to ride a 16hp unit around town than a 160hp one. You just have to stop being a wanker to understand it.

I rode my ex's scooter around a few years back, good fun for some paddock skills. I would laugh my ass off if a scooter passed me on the outside of a corner, then I would probably just kick the bastard off for good measure.

kids!...they like to learn the hard way

I know it's all "haha, that'll learn ya", but I contend the following

THE SAME WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF HE'D BEEN PEDALLING

a cycle in the cycle lane is in fact less visible to the left turner than the scooter, it is more likely to be taken out in exactly the same way, PROVIDED that the cyclist and motorcyclist (or scooterist if you want to make the distinction) are behaving in the same way.

So quite frankly, I can't see how his being a scooter made a difference, it was more his either

1. going too fast, faster than a SENSIBLE cyclist would
2. not being observant, less observant than a SENSIBLE cyclist would

A scooter or motorcycle can (I know it's shocking unheard of knowledge for Kiwibiker, but here you go anyway) be ridden slowly, and if you're sidling up a cycle lane, that's exactly what you should be doing, just like a cyclist would.

Now, why you ask am I on a high horse about this? Because I think that motorcyclists should formally be allowed to use cycle lanes, PROVIDED that they are behaving like a cyclist, so basically, riding SLOWLY.

-I know it's all "haha, that'll learn ya"
-THE SAME WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF HE'D BEEN PEDALLING
-I think that motorcyclists should formally be allowed to use cycle lanes.

-Never once did I imply or state "HAHA that'll learn ya" in regards to a kid who nearly got seriously hurt, crippled or worse case killed! (it was bloody horrible to watch!)

-As clearly stated in the post, he was speeding, riding erratically & dangerously!...much faster than a peddly could have gone...hence not the car drivers fault!

-cycle lanes are for cyclists!...not scooters...motorcycles...or cars!, never ride in them-(but I do understand your logic if "filtering" past stand still traffic...but even then, its illegal and could put a cyclist at risk...or even worse!...you could also scratch your ride on their handle bars as they go under you:laugh:)
