Its called Grooming
I have no doubt grooming happens, but it's damn depressing if you have to defend yourself every time you post something civil.
To me the difference is wanting a conversation for conversations sake as opposed to the hope of trying to get a leg over sometime in the future.

To me, putting effort into communication with women you'd fuck if you could but know you won't get to is demeaning.
I don't bother to dress it up as being 'for conversation's sake'. Let's face it, she's got nothing interesting to say. I do not see threads about new 125s from young male learner riders getting this much eager attention.
This sort of behaviour has always been endemic to KB. I disdain it, and (as you may have noticed) I like to jump in and poke fun at those who haven't enough self-respect or self-awareness to take the same approach.

You're right, she hasnt got much to say, and that may BE the reason that she has gotten a lot of advice, or would you prefer her to be 'a la SMOKEU' style?

I actually wonder if you do understand respect? You like to 'needle' instead of discuss a topic sensibly, then wonder why you've gotten 'needled' in return? If anyone asks a sensible question or wants help as a new rider i will always male or female (ooops I must be bi, huh?) reply if I can offer any insight or help, As one poster here put a few weeks ago,, the old guys may come across a bit weird/strong, but we are trying to KEEP you alive!! I am NOT an 'expert rider' or professional trainer, however I have ridden almost 38yrs, as my MAIN form of transport, including English winters, London traffic and European roads..... guess I know fuck all about fuck all

Those ones are few and far between, though, so your statement is correct in the most part. Men are, generally, much more interesting to actually associate with.

Oh, I don't wonder; I do understand. I just thought I should back off from the needling for a bit to clarify an important point.

Funnily enough, my observation has been that anyone who waves the number of years they've been riding for around as some sort of credential generally tends to dispense bad advice.
Advice needs to stand on its own merits.
And your statements weren't clear enough, so I felt that they needed countering. I think that with Katman and Crasherfromwayback's posts above we've reached an accurate picture that can stand as good advice to all.

Oh you have always had such a way with words! There will always be attention whores (male and female) here; n00bs will continue to ask seemingly inane questions (often they either don't know quite how to articulate what they want, or are just over-eager to participate - nothing really wrong with either of those premises); some blokes here will always feel that any member here who has tits'n'bits is only potential rogering material; blah blah blah I could go on.
But you are right in that clearly stated advice should be easily identifiable as pearls of wisdom to mull over, and bullshit is, well, always bullshit no matter who is spouting it.

Not at all Beemer, remember she was a scooterist before now. I think the practise in a slow group could do the world of good.
disagree...by GM own admission she is still coming to grips with the very basics of motorcycling...I would think a weekend of mastering the basics would be the first step,I think track days have their place but down the road a wee bit.
BMWST?
20th April 2012, 21:21
The fact that after decades of practice you're still not very good at controlling motorcycles doesn't imply that everyone else has to suck quite so hard for quite so long.
I dont see what my riding ability has to do with the argument that a rider with less than a few days experience on this bike and by her own admission lack confidence in the basic control of her new bike.
I dont deny that Track days are a good way of learning ones and the bikes limits, but a bit of slow speed /balance/braking starts and hill starts are prolly more valuable in the first couple of months.

I would agree ... learning to walk before you learn to run ... type thinking ...
She would probably learn more on a run over to Featherston and back.

So what is a good idea then ? Encouraging relatively inexperienced riders on to the streets, in brutal city traffic ?
On the track there is strict safety rules in place, which can actually be enforced. There is room to maneuver is you make a mistake and even more room if you do go off the track. It is the perfect place to learn to control a bike properly. Given that there is different groups for different speeds, not many people are going to be there to actually "race" around the track.
Arguing against track time is like arguing that helmets are bad because they weigh your head down.
i am NOT saying a track day has no value your points are a perfect illustration of that. But this is virtually a brand new rider. She admits to stalling on some occasions. Some basic handling type skills need to be practised first along with some braking ...Track day in about a few months i think

Don't stop practicing GM, every ride my n00b girlfriend does ends with 10 or 20 minutes of basic handling exercises, braking, counter steering, swerving, tight turns etc. She can measure her improvement now, compared to her pre-road ability & it increases her confidence every trip knowing that she is developing the right skills. Increasing her fun factor too.

First real group ride today! Slight detour on to some gravel too which had me a little nervous. Last time I rode on gravel I screwed up. The front went out, and I ended up with large purple bruises for a few weeks. This time, I stayed constant with the throttle, gave myself a good amount of space and thankfully the guy behind me knew I was noob at gravel and gave me some space. Sucess, no bin!
New roads for today, Haywards hill, The gravel road beside river road, the motorway from Whitby to Ngauranga and the Pautahanui Inlet. Which I loved. Had another play around the bays. Shelley bay is quickly becoming a favourite but the wind makes me nervous.
So all up, about 200kms today, a few hill starts, an impressive moment where I couldn't hook third down the road from my house  and met some awesome new people!
Now its bedtime. Cos falling asleep at my desk is just stupid.

best advice I can give for any conditions is 'loose on the bars' that means shoulders relaxed arms bent and loose and light grip or just rest your palms on the grips. This is esp. Important on gravel and in windy conditions. If you are rigid, then when a wind gust occurs your body acts as a sail and with tight arms you twist at the bars without intending. Loose will let the bike track more predictably.

Re the wind. I started this thread and got some good advise. http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/139755-What-s-the-best-way-to-handle-wind?highlight=handle+wind
Now it doesnt bother me at all, just relax. The bike is designed to go straight so a gust just makes it feel like the bikes fighting you. Its not, thats your reaction to the wind not the bike.
And watch this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FiPgAMXZKI&feature=digest
Then just ride the bike. I only use my car these days when I have my kids.

Those that assume there is nothing around those corners that may harm them ... or obstruct their movement along the road ... may sometimes find ... that assumption incorrect. THEN ... proclaim themselves not at fault as the event could not be predicted.
The mere thought that something (not always a vehicle) is around that corner ... will give you a half second extra advantage when you need it ... because you were expecting it.

Probably a sensible decision given d3adlytuna's fresh and raw experience. Admittedly his occurred at an advanced rider day on the track but shit does happen there too. Best you take things easy on yourself in the early days - great to hear you enjoyed the group ride (try sticking with groups members who you know are not dicks-on-two-wheels and who will be cognizant of your relative inexperience) - and stick to slowly developing your skills. Small steps.
No matter what your riding level all riders face situations which will test their thinking and machine handling skills to the max; don't be in a rush to push the envelope too soon.
Happy riding!

I got a little too close to hitting him as well, when the person I was riding with came back to see what was going on, I took a step back and decided to call the police instead. Sure, but do have it checked out well as they are a pretty "soft" bike and if the bearing has been damaged, you definitely need it sorted.

I'm having lunch with him before he leaves, so I don't regret it too much
Right, so then you become the bad guy and potentially face a worse dilemma than the idiot driver did, assuming of course he does not defend himself and put you on your arse!!!
IMO GM did the right thing.
Oh don't worry, I don't disagree that GM did the right thing, of course she did. I'm just saying that if it was me and that prick caught me on an off day, he would be eating his balls for breakfast, or having a lovely little something etched into his pretty little car. I mean for fucks sake how blind can you be really?

For those playing at home, there isn't a single mark on me, or Zach. I'm really glad I managed to keep my composure as best I did, there was a lot of strong language involved, but thats the extent of it. Had he said sorry, I wouldn't have bothered with a police report. But the muppet blamed me for it. So I let him have it with both barrells, and filed a police report for good measure.
Also, I'm drinking aloe vera and pomegranite out of a wine glass. Cos it tastes good, and its good for me. Better so than vodka.

Hahhahahaha who was it that called me rageface? Cos I'd be living up to it. Plus I'd have been arrested. I can't have that!
I got backended a few decades ago. Hit me hard, then came at me a hundred miles an hour, as I called the cops he fucked off. Turned out he was a disqualified driver and a fuckwit.
It was on the corner of Tasman and Buckle St in Wellington.

I know that corner, I can almost see it from where I live. Thats a dodgy place with people trying to beat the lights, so I'm kinda cautious around there.
It is just down the road from a house I used to live in and still own.
I had a lot of fun around that area.
