More the rider than the bike I think. But at least as a 3 cylinder it'll be capable to run in the front half of the F3 field rather than the back third of the 600's.

How does the cost compare between sleeving it down as a four and turning it into a three?

Id rather be last in the 600s than first in F3 but I hear what you saying

I dont think it compares at all on HP or cost. I think it would cost about $500 to make it a 3 where is would be about 4k to make is a 450/4

Hmmm... Not really a fair comparison then... I wonder if there would be a market for a 450/4 these days? I think the old Honda Black bombers are getting too old, and heavy, to compete and the Suzuki GS450 would be better, but still too old? Of course they are twins, but then there's the Honda 400 Super Sport. How about boring out a 400 four or just competing with a 400 four. eg. VFR, etc.?

That's if you do most of the work yourself. For us normal types that really shouldn't fiddle with the insides of engines you can add another $3k for labour.

The 400's existed because of the laws in Japan so we got tons of cheap second hand ones. These days there's no reason to go for the smaller capacity when 600's and 650's are so well priced.

So when are you gonna join the revolution and go for a mini-cross-plane like 450?? They sound absolutely fabulous if you ask me :D

In the end I guess it is about cost.

Yep. I'd love to race in the 600's or Superbikes (preferably Superbikes cos I'll always be bigger than the majority of 600 riders) but only if someone else was paying for it.

When someone gets 100hp out of one & they weight less than 130kg.........., check out the Tigcraft specs, thats the bike to beat.

Think you might have quoted the wrong post there mate.

One of the things I was looking at for new projects is an engine made by a guy in England. It's a 1 litre, 100hp single cylinder. Hmmmm ....

I originally asked him about the Husaberg engines he builds and got chatting. Turns out he's been spending lots of time on designing and building the 1 litre 100hp single for customers to purchase. It's about £6k for the engine, electricals, electronic gearbox, data logging, fuel injection etc and going into production in 2 months. Only thing missing is the frame, wheels and brakes.

He hasn't updated his website for about a year but you can email him about the engine or whatever else.

Very cool. Keen to hear how the rebuild/modifications go. Especially replacing the piston and rod with a balance weight... Has that been done successfully before?
Good luck with it!

Cool, i wonder if the piston stays still & the rest of the bike goes up & down instead ? :-)

Yes, it has. Although that engine is currently in bits cos the crank touched the crank sensor making it run on 2 cylinders. However, it made 10 more horsepower than the short stroke 4 cylinder that was originally in the bike.

The short stroke engine didn't really work because it was insanely over square and had to rev to about 20,000rpm. But the valve gear etc would only handle an absolute maximum of about 17,000rpm.

Put it in a light weight Tig Craft frame and the answer would be yes!!

I have a VFR400 NC30 rolling chassis. This is a BAD IDEA

VERY bad. I believe the NC30 chassis is spaghetti without the engine bracing it. Sticking something that will probably twist tree stumps out of the ground into it is likely to break it in half before you get to the end of the driveway.

thanks for the reality check. but still! it would be like my old SRX6 x a million.

Wow!:woohoo: Did it vibrate much? How much more hp did it make over leaving the piston and rod in?

That is exactly what I was thinking.

Until I found out about that engine I was keen on putting a Husaberg 650 into a rare-as-rocking-horse-shit-250GP frame. But they're impossible to find and the 1 litre engine would break one of those I reckon. They're strong frames but they weren't built for the amount of torque that thing would be throwing around.
