FROSTY
29th July 2005, 07:57
day after day the last couple of weeks ive been rained on and spat water at by cages and trucks. Im getting mighty tired of climbing back into bike gear still wet and smelly from their last encounter with the rain.
Im thinking I bought it on myself by telling the world I like wet weather riding. --SHEESH

Jeez mate .... don't be such a wimp !! .... :devil2:

I have to say though, it is a bit of a pain when you get into gear that is still wet :cold: but hey .... you could always give up riding in the winter altogether ..... :

Buy yourself a de-humidifier for your office and you'll have bone dry gear at leaving time.

You need to move to Wellington mate. Yesterday was the first day that my gear was soaked in over a month.

Thankfully everything was dried out this morning. Nothing worse than soggy gloves. Isn't so much of a problem at work as you can pop them by the vents on the pc to dry out/warm up for the ride home.

Ciao.

Come on FROSTY, winter only comes once a year, so make the most of it. It sounds like you want some of that modern type of riding gear that doesn't get you wet.

You dont wear leathers do you. It may be time to transition to synthetics.

I havent been wet in the rain for as long as I can remember - the trick is to just get good synthetics. My frank thomas jacket (although about 17 years old now) has a rubber center liner - also its important to get storm flaps over all teh buttons/zips or the wind will press the water thru.

Goretex is not waterproof on motorcycles - so check if you have goretex kit, that it has an internal liner. I also prefer my kit to have impact foam rather than plastic body armour. One of the good things about goretex outers is that they lose the water real fast, so you dont end up carrying the weight around. A good way to check the jacket is really high quality is to put a piece of paper in the external pockets and it should still be dry after riding for an hour or two in the most severe rain storm. Cheap kit, will soak the pockets first.

Other things I have learned is to make sure that the jacket has a high neck (that you can easily clip closed with one hand). When its raining you need this to go up and under your lid or the rain will hit your neck and go down inside the jacket. Also saves on using a neck warmer on cold days and you can leave it unclipped on warm days.

The jacket should come down low enough so that wind doesnt lift it, and the trousers should come up to the middle of your waist (or thereabouts) and well down over your boots/shoes (to just below your ankles), they should have a zip/fastner at the ankle to seal them off (I actually just use a cheap waterproof over trou).

after riding through several Scottish highland winters, I have vowed never again to only own a bike. Damn, salty shitty roads suck, I'll keep my pride and joy prestine and non-smacked up for the summer and use a car to get about. My view, but good on those that can hack sticking it out in winter conditions.

Yep. Tis winter. Gear drys off during the day or overnight. Except gloves, so I have two pair. Fabric gear, and PVC overcovers.

They get wet, I stay dry underneath.

Except for feet. Waterproof boots are a myth. Take spare shoes and socks in waterproof luggage.

After extensive research I have concluded that the rain is exactly as wet as it was years and years ago.

Going to move down to the big smoke of Chch?

We've hardly had rain recently. In fact, yesterday was the first day in the past 6 weeks of commuting that I've had to put on my gear (light showers).

I havent had a good raining on weeks. and parking in a parking building makes for good dry bike when I come outa work. (dryer than at my house anyway)

but at work I ussually just hang it up in the closet with a towel underneath to drip off (dryrider/cordura)

despise being wet though. and I have even resorted to wearing plastic bags on my feet (leather work boots or sneakers) which works awesome, and your much more visiable on the road. (assuming your using a visible color of course)

edit: only if its absoulutley Shitting down with rain.
I wont be seen dead with plastic bags on my feets by any of you fulla's

I understand where you're coming from Frosty. I was forced to visit Auckland last week (Thu & Fri). What a fix you Guys and Gals are in. Can't drive a car because of the traffic jams. Can't ride a bike because it rains atleast 4 times a day, every day. Or have I just been unlucky and missed the 8 full dry days per year Auckland gets? Wonderful place. And what's with trying to find a decent pub that opens after 9pm??? Better nightlife hangouts around the Vatican City than that Viaduct.

You should be in the Horowhenua today - glorious day, teeshirt weather - not shorts, legs too white!

If I didn't have to wait around for the insurance assessor to come and have a look at our cracked shower, I'd be on the bike and his lordship would be getting his own lunch!

Don't have the odour problem with my dririder gear but yaeh it is a pain when it's wet but I just always look forward to hopping on my bike even in the rain.Either wait till the rain stops or get hard.
