Used to go to the gym ever day after work. Then I moved across the road from the gym and never went

Pushups, running and mountain biking keeps me fit and doesn't cost me anything.

Never been to a gym, also never felt the need to take photos of or look at other dudes muscles either, related perhaps? :innocent:

Jogging and calisthenics are damn good value for staying in shape, and apart from running shoes, completely free :D

You're not doing it right in that case. (when I was an mtb-er it was nearly as expensive as motorcycling!) though I am a bit of a bling whore.

Would you like to share more detail? What workouts do you do?

Mate - I've got more workout plans than the Pope has pointy hats.

Currently I'm just coming off a weight loss cycle where I was really working cardio into everything. Lost to my goal but it was a lot harder than I thought, mainly because my back / hip area was so rooted and I couldn't run on my rest day.

Anyway - To fix this we are doing a lot of work on the hip / glutes area and mobilizing back etc. So far its working and I've got a few runs in but early days. I've kept up the cardio before and during the workout making it as tough as I can. That way I hope I won't loose too much strength in this phase. Lower body has a lot of squats and lunges, upper body has a lot to reptile crawls with spiderman press, shoulder press, raises, pike push ups, chin ups, dips etc Basically not to many heavy weights in this cycle.

Basic program is to do lower body one night, upper body and core next night, rest and repeat. Sunday is funday and I do my 'boys' exercises like bench press / bi's and tris etc etc or whatever I feel like (chaos training)

In 3 or 4 months I'll go back to the heavy weights again. Current goal is to maintain a solid (3 x 12) 100kg bench press when I'm 60.... Well to be honest as long as I can run and manage to bench more than my body weight I'll be happy.... :innocent:

Let me know if you need to know more but I've been doing this a while now and if you are just starting, go easy and learn lots

Everyone has different motivations or reasons and the gyms not for everyone but its a great tool for others.

I do a lot of strength training, mostly around compound lifts and a reverse pyramid program.

Deadllifts and squats are your friend.

185kg deadlift unassisted is my PR so far, but after a few months of life getting in the way of training I'm down to about 170. No particular training goal beyond being strong and fit (I also run and do various cardio).

Going to a gym is good for the body and soul.
As one ages, it helps with any aches and pains.
It helps keep everything in its right place.
And what it doesn't fix, the "wonder bra" is a great invention :apumpin:

Havn't been very long since I joined gym. Just got my habbit of going often with a basic workout plan. At first I was like "I should go to gym today... I should go to gym today.... Gotta wake up from bed... huuurr derrrr, huuurr......". It's been great so far, keeps me mentally sane (good meditation for me, like the other guy said, good for the soul) and body fit. It's also plus to feel healthier and start to get "in shape".

I'll feel free to fire away my questions when I get em. Thanks!

Don't be too hard on the grunters and mirror sluts. If you are working hard enough you will grunt and sometimes you need the mirror to make sure you have it right (but I know what you mean)

Yep, I hit the gym 3 or 4 times a week, do mostly cross-fit training now. Have noticed a huge increase in my stamina when trail running etc. ever since I moved into cross-fit. Also do 3 or 4 hours of hand to hand combat training each week and usually a night a week I go for a bit of a run.

Been weight-training for years. Decided a long time ago to be an old fit(tish) bastard, rather than an old fat (or frail) bastard. I seem to recall reading somewhere that frailty in old age can have a compounding effect on injuries.
It set(s) an example for my young'uns.
It certainly helps with motorcycling.
It gets more difficult as you get older (recovery time, and all that), but in some perverse way, I find that a good gym-session clears the mind in a way that motorcycling does.
I have the goal (after injuries and stuff), of benching, squatting and deadlifting (done) my body weight (or more) this year.
It would help if I drank a little less alcohol (not that I over-drink anyway), and ingested less dairy product.
But then, what would be the point...?

I have found that I have had to buy more and more weights, To the point that they are now only held on the bar with half a turn of thread.

The best gym is being active outdoors...you do not need to be pumping iron in a room to a) look like a machine or b) actually be a machine. In fact, half the muscle bound clowns that i see in the gym are reasonably unfit! That said, there is a lot to be said about the social side of belonging to a gym...I have made a few decent mates at the local gym.

Shit yeah. The difference with boxing vs martial arts Ive found is that you dont take the big hits and kicks and I havent hurt my hips and stuff from stretching. I buggered my hamstring up doing martial arts which affected my hip, which is why I stopped doing it. took aaaages to come right and when I did, I didnt go back to MA. Been going to the gym properly for the first time these past 8 months.

For a couple of years I just had a little routine at home with dumbbells, now I'm doing 2-3 nights of weights, 1 night of kick boxing and 1 night of boxing. The weights are great for mass building then boxing etc is both strength and cardio... They really work to turn what fat you do have into lean muscle.

Really enjoying the gym environment anyway. As said by others, definitely more motivational than in your bedroom with dumbbells!!

If you approach the gym right it too is utterly unpretentious but perhaps that's clouded my me now being so old I don't notice it. Certainly the only way I can lift heavy weights is to utterly zone out and block out every thing around me and focus.

Always remember that everyone has traveled a different path before they got to the gym and everyone has a different body/genetic make up. So not only is everyone 'different' everyone has a different goal and will (hopefully) be exercising towards that goal. One day when I was feeling totally shit because I'd just come from the Dr with some more unfortunate news that yet another internal organ was rebelling and trying to take down the establishment I was having a real 'why me' moment. You know - 'its not fair' yada yada yada.. One of the trainers then helped a young woman onto the exercise bike and she couldn't even stand up un aided (used to be a top athlete but was in a car accident). It was a major achievement for her just to turn the crank once and boy did I feel like a fraud. I realized that I was there to do my best and not to compare myself to others (bit like riding a bike really).

It seems to be a common failing to mock others less competent than ourselves and despise those more blessed. Yeah - you can laugh at the grunters, the poseurs, the fatties, farters and sweaters but they are there trying to fight against their demons and more power to them I say. I admire effort.

At my age there is no way I can bulk up like someone in their 20's, I just don't make testosterone like I did. And after many injuries there are some parts on my body that need a bit more protection now plus my body type tends towards storing a bit of fat. Lets face it I work in a bloody office these days, I'm never going to become Conan the Destroyer with 2 hours in a gym without chemical or surgical help. So we work out differently and our goals are not the same as a 25 year olds.

For me, the body side of it is almost secondary anyway. The happy buzz I get from a hard workout gives me a real lift and keeps the 'black dog' at bay naturally. Its a real boost mentally and what I do I'm doing for ME and Vicki (we work out together) not anyone else. :bleh:

Yup - it really helps as long as you can manage your blood sugars while you are working out. Its different for everyone but funny how decades ago I was told I couldnt do it... Blimmin doctors ;-)

I'm type 2 and I find if I work out consistently - 3 times a week with weights, push-ups, & sit-ups - and brisk walks everyday, I can manage on minimal doses of the pills, sometimes even skip them if meals aren't heavy. Skip a week of exercise though and the metabolism starts slowing down and I need the pills at the regular prescribed dose.

I've gone from a portly 122kgs to a marginally fit 105kgs... Been told by docs 90kgs is right for my height (6' 1") but I'll be happy to reach 100kgs and work on reducing the body fat instead of weight.

I'd like to build up my strength though, as I was caught out with the bike tipping over this past weekend and found lifting it difficult... :o

As for the pretentious, farty, sweaty, annoying grunters, and mirror sluts? I avoid them by going to the gym at 5am – the joys of having 24hr access. So by the time I have finished my workouts the pretentious can pose, fart, sweat, grunt and slut around all they like.

As for the pretentious, farty, sweaty, annoying grunters, and mirror sluts? I avoid them by going to the gym at 5am – the joys of having 24hr access. So by the time I have finished my workouts the pretentious can pose, fart, sweat, grunt and slut around all they like.

Yep, same here and it works. I even go to Les Mills Xtreme which is well known for it's 'pretentiousness"....

Oh fuckity fuckity fuck, that was hard, hard, (did I mention hard?) work.

Just coming up on the post-exercise buzz now though..:niceone:

Was that at Boxing Alley Stanley st? Good crowd there?

And yep, boxing is the best form of core strength and cardio I've ever experienced!

Best gym I have been to

http://www.waiweight.com/

Bev's a top guy, The gear is new and kept in great shape, the prices is so low its not funny, and even though its a "private" gym its better patronaged then the "public" gyms.

I'd still be going there if I had stayed in the Wairarapa.

Now I go to the city Gym in Wanganui, no pretentious shit there, Its too cheap.

My gym is one of the cheaper ones with archaic equipment ... not known for 'pretentiousness' so much but more for its fartacious members.

:killingme I know right!

I actually think I suffer from sleepgyming ... so 5 a.m doesn't really exist in my world either.

Good work that man. I'm 6' and down to 93kg now but the last 3kg is hard to shift plus its just a number, its how you feel and function thats really important.

Building up muscle will speed up your metabolism so hit the weights hard. If you do bulk up a bit you can forget the 90kg lark - go with what looks right ;-)

btw - I was working on a diabetics guide to the gym once. Everyone was really interested until I asked them to contribute....

I go to Anytime Fitness (24hrs) with a friend to spot each other but sometimes at night when I am up late or bored I go alone. At around 2am there is no one, and feels like a private gym.

No comparing or such. Just me dealing myself.

Mostly I feel good, except would like to be a bit stronger to manhandle the bike easier.

I think the extent I've managed to go is just to firm up and shed some fat rather than getting close to bulking up. Maybe I should do that though, concentrating on bulking up - I mean, without steroids, I wouldn't need to worrry about ending up like Arnie, right?

That's the one, it's five minutes walk from work...and ten minutes back.

Good friendly crowd, Monty Betham turned up towards the end as well, top, down to earth bloke he is.

Got footy training at 6.30, tomorrow will be interesting.

OK so right now yr feelin great, self righteously exhausted and you know you've found the right path.
this time tmrw tho, you won't be able to bend down and pick up a feather without your quads, calfes and back screaming at you. DAMHIK:roll eyes:

But if you keep it regular, that goes away and you get to keep the self righteously exhausted stuff.
All Good.

I've recovered better than I expected. Backing up at footy (round ball) same day was tough but probably a good thing to do from that pov...I'm suffering nothing worse than a bit of unaccustomed soreness in shoulders and pecs.

Need to juggle in a couple of sessions per week I think so I ca justify some cool gloves.

Footy under lights at Mt Albert tonight, instead of tomorrow arvo, wasn't in the planning but...

used to go a lot when I played rugger. Lots of strength work, and eating heaps and drinking those weight gain supplements to keep my weight up. If I didn't do the weights my weight would go to about 95kgs whereas with the gym program it would be about 105-110kg, which is where it is now sitting on my ass:facepalm:
