View Full Version : What amount of broadband do you have?

I used to be on the Telecom "Home Lite" one. Gave me 30GB. I was considering upgrading as we were always running out before end of month. Then Telecom contacted me last year and offered me free double amount. So there I was getting 60GB for same price as 30GB. I was feeling really smug. But we were still getting very close to maxing it out. Now they called me again and told me that they are doubling my Broadband for free. So now we have 120GB for the cost of 30GB at $95/month (that also includes my phone).
So I was wondering what peeps on here have for plan?

I have a 260gb cap and the internet is not filtered or slowed down in anyway. I am with Snap and I do not have a phone. Costs me $102 a month and 2$ of that is for unlimited youtube.

Basically Snap let you pay2$ more a month and any youtube data does not count towards your monthly cap. It was a lot more useful when I only had 60gb haha.
I went from 60gb to 260gb over night, Snap went and raised ALL of their plans. Then afterwards all the others started "doubling" their plans which are still terrible in comparison lol.

Up: 14.31 Mbps
Down: 0.88 Mbps
Real numbers:
I get about 1.6MiB/s download off my seedbox. As far as I know I am limited only by my copper cable and distance to the exchange.

Oh snap! That sounds good!
I basically maxed out my 20GB plan and asked Telecom early in the year what they can offer as I was looking at Orcon for potentially larger plans. Telecom offered me 60GB for what I am paying now
And then a month later, a letter from Telecom tells me they are doubling their users' plans, which means I get 120GB now! It'll probably take my family a couple of years to max that out though!

What do you pay for your 120gb ?
Also with snap:
"With 03 for FREE you can call any South Island landline for FREE (available for South Island originating calls)."
Only useful for south island customers though. Standard local calling is free everywhere else.
Second edit:
I don't actually work for Snap haha. I am just what people call a happy customer! :D

It's worth noting that Snap's unlimited youtube does actually cost more now - those of us who had it when it was $2 per month still have it grandfathered in at that rate, but if you sign up for it now it's $5 per month.
I'd definitely recommend them, they've got far and away the best customer service of any of the ISPs I've ever dealt with, and since they bumped the data caps right the hell up a few months back, the price/cap ratio is excellent by NZ standards - you get a base 5GB with your plan, and then an additional 20GB for $10, 60GB for $15, 145GB for $25, 250GB for $40, or 550GB for $70. Additionally you can pay $5 and get uncapped downloading between 1am and 7am for 3 nights, which for me generally amounts to about 110-130GB for $5.
They also offer VDSL2 for an extra $50 per month, but at the moment you can get it for an extra $25 per month with the cost of the modem more than halved if you sign up for a 24 month contract.

Depends where Snap has POP (Point of Presence) as to your realistic speeds.
On Telecom, was 60GB and edging towards the wrong end, now got the double to 120GB and it should suffice... All the heavy downloading of files/updates/patches etc is done at work on no cap, no extra dollars.

Wonder why Telecom decided to double it again.
Perhaps because tell-lie-scum are cockfags who need shooting and then disembowelling?
They are desperate for customers...
If they were the last communication providers in NZ we would start using courier pidgeons and smoke signals instead.
Fucking semaphore would be faster and more reliable.

For those wondering why the ISPs are all increasing their data caps at the same price point, it's because Southern Cross Cable cut their pricing by up to 44% back in January. For years they've had no meaningful competition so they've been able to charge whatever they please, but some serious competition is on the way, and they seem to be hoping to shed a little of the ill-will generated by their price gouging well before the rival networks are up and running, in an effort to retain as many customers as possible.

Well, I suspect partially it was a case of all the ISPs watching each other - once one of them had done it, the rest kind of had to follow suit, but they were probably all hoping it either wouldn't happen or it'd take as long as possible.
Having said that, they did say the price would only be lowered on new contracts, so it may have been a case of waiting till contract renegotiation time before the price was dropped, or a period of negotiation to convince Southern Cross Cable to drop their prices for existing contracts.
It does kind of seem like Telecom missed a great opportunity to build some goodwill though - given that they're the majority shareholder in Southern Cross Cable, they presumably could have dropped their prices immediately rather than waiting to react to the other ISPs once they'd negotiated lower pricing.

Telescum will never miss an opportunity to milk the customers dry for as long as possible unless they are confronted, like in my case, by customers wanting to switch over to somewhere else. If only Telescum were a dairy company, they'd make even more money than Fonterra!
It was one of their overpaid (now happily retired) CEOs who said "Confusion is a marketing tactic..." when questoned about their overcomplicated and expensive plans. And she retired with a reward of a nice big fat bonus to thank her for milking the customers to their last drop of blood!

On their website it says add $10 for being out of their main area, so it would be $129, which is only 6 bucks cheaper than currently (and thats assuming we go over the 100gigs), not worth signing up to a 12 month term for. Similar for their 150gig plan, almost worth changing.

The customer service is excellent from Snap so far as well. I only have to wait a minute or 2 on the phone, and the call centre staff speak fluent NZ English so it's a lot better than dealing with a very difficult to understand Indian person on the blower.
There is simply no excuse any more for pathetically small data caps from the likes of Telstraclear and other such ISPs that use the same bullshit excuses to charge their customers like a wounded bull for small amounts of bandwidth.
