Sorry this pertains to cars, but interested to hear your thoughts.

Was looking at upgrading my car for work. For a bit of market research I went to the local Kia dealer.

Car was $18900 plus on road costs.
How much for onraod costs - $990 was the reply WTF?

I asked the salesperson how that was made up and he said:
Registration
Car mats
Safety inspection (required by law??)
Groom
Petrol and
wheel alignment (as it gets upset on the boat trip over for Korea apparently)

I cant believe that for a "new" car especially the wheel alignment part
So $1K on a $19K equates to over 5% additional cost.

We brought a new car in 2005 and paid $350 but nearly $1000 is way OTT.

Needless to say I would be a bit reluctant to by a new Kia

Anyone else has recent experiences and what did you pay for on road costs?

seems a bit over the top,

rego fees are here http://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicle/registration-licensing/fees.html

they have to do the Pre Delivery inspection by law, and log it with LTNZ, but i have not heard of people being charged for it,

as for charging for a wheel alignment on a new vehicle seems a bit off to me,

The problem is, there's no rules dictating what can be considered as ORC.

In my opinion, charging for a wheel alignment and grooming on a new car is seriously stretching credibility. The car mats charge is simply insulting.

Agreed. It sounds like the salesman is trying to snip a few $ onto the total price which is his job but unimpressive from your point of view. It cost me almost $600 to reregister my BMW R80 and petrol cars are less than that.

Don't be put off Kia, they appear to be good machines. A mate of mine just bought a Kia Sportage for $40k. He previously owned a Nissan Patrol and also has a Merc.

'Fraid I'm a Toyota fan but they are expensive. I've had my Prado for 11 years, can't afford to upgrade and in truth am perfectly happy with it at 300,000km. Farg! coulda bought a house at the price in 2001 but no regrets. Toyota do build strong 4WDs.

This has been a real topic of debate within the industry and also the consumer watch dogs.

My flat mate just bough a brand new car and during the selection process we asked for a break down of what was included with the ORC. Fuck me they even charged for filling with oil, fluids and a clean.... The petrol charge was absurd as the per litre price was over inflated by 30%.

My argument was that if they sold the car without all this stuff then it was not fit for purpose....

Dealers varied in price, some examples:

Mini wanted $1700, Hyundai wanted $900 and Mazda wanted $900 but were prepared to negotiate and took $200 off. She bought the Mazda. Mini were so fucking arrogant (I wanted to punch the guy in the head), the Hyundai guy just wanted a sale and lied his arse off...And the mazda guy ran out of answers....

It's the "Cheap Flights" syndrome taken to extreme.

Trouble is, they're all doing it, and trying to beat each other at the game. Unfortunately common sense gets lost in the process, and they can't see that they're simply antagonising the customers by hitting them with hidden (and inflated) charges.

Finally, it's not us used car salesmen getting the bash.
