View Full Version : Ideas for a company name??

Righto- those that have been sworn to secrecy are now off the hook. Thanks guys.

I am going to start a company which will import motorcycle parts and accessories. Yes I know there is a fair bit of competition in this area- lets just say I'm not expecting it to make me rich. We'll see where it goes.

So anyway, I need a company name. As it's based purely around bikes I like the idea of having MOTO in the name. For some reason I like Motoline Imports Unfortunately there is a clothing brand available with the same name. My accountant suggested Motolyne.

Any thoughts?

Yes I will offer discounts to KB members! And I'm thinking a good discount for licensed racers would be a good idea too.... assuming I've got something they want.

Cheers

How about sticking an "R" in there and making it Motorline?

I've just looked up the Companies Office website, and there is an outfit called Motorline Tyres Ltd in Hastings, but nothing else.

Firstly, rethink your sales strategy. No bike shop will touch your product if you're selling it to the public also, namely, us.

Unless you're opening a retail shop. But yeah, as a wholesaler, you have to be pretty committed to the shops selling your lines.

Motorlyne - I thought it sounds like a motor oil. Why not include the name imports or importers in your title? At least it is then very obvious and fitting.

That's Lynne, you nongs...

- Do you want the company name to start with "A" for any particular reason? (If so, go for something really memorable with two As, like Aardvark Express)
- Do you really need to have a reference to vehicles or parts? (If so, go for something literal that says what it means and means what it says).

I like the Aardvark idea -- a resourceful animal that can sniff/dig out whatever it seeks. It could also make a great logo...

"Motorcycle Parts & Accessories" is what you are selling..
so call it that... "Motorcycle Parts & Accessories" and that way it will catch the attention of m/bike riders around NZ who are wanting parts etc etc.

On the Motolyne/Motoline thing, you wouldn't want to name it something that sounds like another company name - especially considering the strandard of spilleng about thase days (Google 'Lyne/Lynne debacle' for a egzampel).

No seriously its a hard one .... and good luck in whatever name you choose

Me personally I like a dot com name incorperating the telephone number

or 0800 Moto parts.com

Good luck anyway

Interesting reading the feedback. Thanks!

Hmmm, Motolyn(n)e I can see some confusion developing there.
Interesting to see some people immediately think OIL- that was my reaction too. Not sure why. Think I'll steer clear of it.

Motu- nice try!

Funnily enough the best one so far is "Motorcycle Parts & Accessories" Not sure if I'd go with it, but I would shorten it to MPA. It's kind of fitting- most of the companies I will deal with use accronyms for their names, and I have an engineering type background MPa is used to measure the strength of a material, so it ties in to what I do now on some level. I still haven't seen or thought of anything that makes me think "thats it!" though

WT- very good point. I have been thinking about this also- until I have a concrete idea of pricing etc and go and see a few shops, I won't know where I'm positioned. I could go either way, but from what you're saying it looks like you can't have it both ways.

Could you get away with using a hypen and registering it as *Moto-Line*?? I hope Lyne wouldn't mind too much.

Well if I can get around it by just changing an 'I' to a 'Y' I don't see why not. I am a bit concerned about using a name that is similar to a bike apparel brand and a car tyre co. but I do think it's easy to remember, and easy to spell- I get fed up with spelling out the name of the co. I currently work for...

My suggestion is until you have a suitable advertising and marketing budget and in the absence of anything blindingly clever and witty - tell them who you are and what you do in the company name.

Smith's Widgets.

You can always re-invent it phase 2 - ie when turning a profit and the Megawidgetoriumplex Corporation is launched.

Gotta sorta agree here, but make everything the same - not 333/triple 3 (assuming you will have an 0800 no.) When I know the name of the company, sometimes I will just try an easy internet address (assuming a web presence). Also makes things more memorable if the contact details are the same.

Have a short company name, then the phone and internet can be the same (not abbreviations either)

I have been thinking of doing a similar thing lately.
Get a part time job while I build myself a motorbike parts /online business.

I have a list of after market items to sell direct to the public.
Will start small on trademe, (have the first item here right now, will be going on tonight), then create my own web site to market suitable items world wide.

Maybe a parts finding service.

Worth a try?
Gotta have a dream!

I'd say Good luck to you tonyB,
But making a business grow is not much about luck,
But planning, execution, and hard work.

So Good planning to you TonyB. :niceone:

Swahili Name:
Muhanga
Scientific Name:
Orycteropus afer
Size:
24 inches at the shoulder
Weight:
88 to 143 pounds
Lifespan:
23 years in captivity
Habitat:
Dry savanna to rain forest
Diet:
Omnivorous
Gestation:
7 months
Predators:
Humans, lions, hyenas, leopards, pythons

The name aardvark comes from a word meaning "earth pig." Although the aardvark, endemic to Africa, shares some similarities with the South American anteater, the two are not related. The last survivor of a group of primitive ungulates, the aardvark could more accurately be called a near-ungulate that has developed powerful claws.

The aardvark has a short neck connected to a massive, dull brownish-gray, almost hairless body that has a strongly arched back. The legs are short, the hind legs longer than the front ones. The head is elongated and ends in a long, narrow snout, with nostrils that can be closed. The long, tubular ears are normally held upright but can be folded and closed. The short but muscular tail is cone-shaped and tapers to a point. The thick claws on the forefeet are used as digging tools.

Aardvarks are found in all regions, from dry savanna to rain forest, where there are sufficient termites for food, access to water and sandy or clay soil. If the soil is too hard, aardvarks, despite being speedy, powerful diggers, will move to areas where the digging is easier.

Aardvarks are nocturnal, usually waiting until dark before they emerge from their burrows, although after a cold night, they may occasionally sun themselves. They leave a distinctive track from dragging their tails during which their travels average one to three miles but can range up to 18 miles a night. Aardvarks are seldom seen, but their presence in an area serves many other animals. Bats, ground squirrels, hares, cats, civets, hyenas, jackals, porcupines, warthogs, monitor lizards, owls and other birds use abandoned aardvark holes as shelter. The burrows vary from simple chambers with one entrance, to a complicated maze of galleries with 20 or more entrances. Aardvarks keep their burrows clean they deposit their dung in a hole away from the entrance, carefully covering it with earth.

As it is nocturnal and has poor eyesight, the aardvark is cautious upon leaving its burrow. It comes to the entrance and stands there motionless for several minutes. Then it suddenly leaps out in powerful jumps. At about 30 feet out it stops, raises up on its legs, perks up its ears and turns its head in all directions. If there are no sounds, it makes a few more leaps and finally moves at a slow trot to look for food.

Aardvarks specialized in eating termites as long as 35 million years ago. At night they go from one termite mound to another, dismantling the hills with their powerful claws. Insects are trapped by the aardvark's long protractile tongue, which is covered with a thick, sticky saliva. Sometimes the aardvark will press its snout against an opening in a mound and suck up the termites. Aardvarks, with their keen sense of smell, also hunt for the long columns of termites that move outside the mounds at night.

Aardvarks give birth to one offspring at a time. The pinkish, hairless newborn stays inside the burrow for about 2 weeks and then begins to follow its mother in her search for food. The young first eats solid food at 3 months of age and is suckled until 4 months.

At about 6 months the young male becomes independent and goes off on its own, while the young female stays with the mother until after the next baby is born. The young female may then dig its own burrow a few yards away from its mother but still joins her to forage for termites.

The adult aardvark's principal enemies are human (who sometimes kill it for meat), lions, hyenas and leopards; pythons also take the young. When in danger the aardvark takes to the nearest hole, or rapidly excavates one, pushing the dirt backwards with its feet and moving the dirt away with its tail. But if cornered, it defends itself by sitting up, using its tail, shoulders and foreclaws- or it will lie on its back and strike with all four feet.

The aardvark has fewer teeth than most mammals. The teeth are columnar in shape, have no roots and do not grow simultaneously.
Although not thought to be teritorial, females seem to become attached to a particular place. The males wander more. Adult aardvarks are usually solitary, coming together only for mating.

Just as a point of interest, if you (or anyone else for that matter - Racey included) are planning on having a strong internet presence, then you want something with BASIC spelling that everyone knows. And no hypens . . . having worked for a company with a hypen in their URL I can attest to what a mission it is for some people to grasp the concept. And I am an old hand at explaining what a hypen is, I have one in my last name.

Easier to say tonyb@mpa.co.nz than tonyb@M-O-T-O-L-Y-N-E.co.nz, and everyone will remember it easier too. You can tell someone in the street to email tonyb@mpa and they will remember without you having to write it down. I would hazard a guess that AMPS is another crowd that have gone for a simplistic approach in their URL . . .

Just my 2 cents ;-)

Many thanks to all that came up with a name or offered advice. I really appreciate the advice and support you have all given. :grouphug:

There are heaps of companies using "MPA", and one Motorcycle Parts Ltd- so that idea is not going to work- shame 'cause it was growing on me.

For reasons of chronic impatience, and a need to move on it before I talk myself out of it, I came up with a name. Many of you won't like it.... that's OK, my own wife doesn't. It's easy, it's quick, it's been approved (just need to sign the paperwork), and the URL is available.

The name is MotoEquip Limited.

There was a Moto Equip Limited that was struck off earlier this year. I don't know the history of this company, and I can't find out. If it turns out to have a bad name that will hurt me by association I'll change the name. Apparently it's really easy.

Thanks again for all your advice.

Cheers
