100 meters up the road from AMPS the irony of the Doobie Bothers 'Rollin' Down the highway' blasting from the fairing mounted speakers was not lost on me.
A chance combination of two American classics, The Harley-Davidson Electraglide Ultra Classic and the Doobies at large decibels on Hauraki.
Ironic that such a fortuitous combination should meet the Khyber Pass on ramp and an endless line of traffic pulling 5kph.
I deserved some 'super slab' surely. Some freeway room to test the cruise control, pump up the volume and sit back and roll away some k's.
Not Newmarket bloody overpass at a standstill.
Exit stage left. Back over Symonds Street and the Western was flowing freely. Sweeeet. I made it to cruising altitude for the second half of 'Long Train Running'.
Yep. Radio, cruise control, a bank of driving lights, glove boxes, a top box big enough for 2 cartons of Kiwi Rider Mags and another one and a half in each pannier, a lovely sounding torquey v-twin and the last word in footboards and comfort.
A pair of 140kph lounge chairs on wheels.
Out to the end of the Western and I did pick up a carton of mags to deliver. Just thew 'em in the boot.
Then headed East and back down over the bridge and was having a great time. Radio, CD player, CB, Intercom, I didn't have time to play with all of it on the quick spin to Mission Bay.
But I was impressed with the way the big beastie performs around town too. Well balanced and easy to steer and change directions, it has better ground clearance than a Fat Boy or Heritage.
The sound is bebaffled Harley honey to the ears and the big 1450cc pushed the bike along with torquey comfort.
Big, comfortable, beautifully finished (except for some rusty fasteners down low) and with great 'feel good' it's a very stylish way to 'Listen to the music'.

Borrowed it to produce a feature for AMPS rentals web site - and that pic will go on the AMPS downloads page.
I will ask the Ed if he wants a quick spin piece on it, but I submitted the road king one last week so probably won't see print.

Yes, that cruise control is a great thing on long distances. that's one thing I like with the Road King Classic.
