View Full Version : My apologies... to another angry cager

This morning was a choice day to ride to work... not too cold (but then again I wear heaps of gear), perfect clear sky, dark blue all around and then the horizon was orange/yellow, with the moon and few stars shining away... it was just beautiful...

I was splitting lanes up Onewa Rd, as usual... and once past the Gas station at the bottom of Onewa Rd I miss-Judged the two cages ahead of me, as I thought one was further ahead then the other, and they were quite close together so I thought I could kinda weave slowly and miss both mirrors...

Unfortunatly I was wrong... they were exactly spot on side by side and I swearved one way and missed the left hand cages mirror... but my right mirror smacked the right side cages mirror... I heard the bang and felt the bike kinda being pushed to the side...

First reaction: Check my mirror (it's ok... *phew*)
Second Reactions: Look in my mirror (saw the cages mirror still attached to the side of his car *phew*)
Third Reaction: Wave to apologise (don't know if the cager saw me wave or not but I tried)

There was a biker behind me at the time... not sure what kind of bike as all I could see was the outline and the headlight. So if you were the biker behind me (you'd know if you were behind me I have blue LED's under my seat shining down to my pipe and rear wheel), could you see if I broke the glass on his mirror or not?

I hope not.

But anyway, my apologies to the cager, and to all the bikers who might suffer from the wrath of this cager if he turns into a bike hating cager because of this incident :(

*felt bad about that*

Must be the day for it! There was a fella riding in front of me this morning, got to the lights at the end of Brooklyn hill where there are two lanes of traffic - he did the same thing (almost exactly). However he was most unlucky as the cage driver got out of his car right then and there and the abuse started . . . . Not sure what the outcome was - I was late for work and just kept going.

YEah I've had a few close calls in the past splitting lanes, nearly hit a few mirrors... I'm thinking from now on I'll just cruise up the centre line (Seen other bikers do it). Then I don't have to worry about merging or anything... (other than oncoming traffic)

PF - dont stress, car mirrors are pretty hardy - it should be alright. If you had hit it too hard it would have just folded out the way anyway.

However, your appology looks kinda funny with a footer reading "this message is brought to you by the letters F and U" . . . ;)

Placidfemme - Are you having trouble working out if there is enough distance between the cars for you to get your bike throu the gap?

I always say if in doubt - stop and wait as the cars will move on and then the gap will get bigger.
You will only have to wait a short time before the traffic starts moving again.

Kind of... When I was approaching the cars, I could see they were pretty close together... and new I could fit through with a tight squeeze... The cars were at different levels like so: (excuse my drawing...)

Car 1 ................... Car 2

| ...................... |
| ...................... |
>> .................... |
| ......................<<
| ...................... |

Now the ">" and "<" are the mirrors...

Car 1 was slightly ahead of car 2, so I thought I could weave past car 1 and then weave past car 2 as it would all be the same movement (kinda like counter steering... but not as fast... and more weaving than actuall counter steering).

But by the time I got even with the cars... Car 2 had moved forward (as the traffic started moving again slowly) and they were exactly side by side... before I had the chance to think about it "bang" and my right side mirror hit Car 2's left side mirror...

and when the other car moves forward, then you stop and wait.
Because the gap has closed down.
It will open up again....lol.

I have struck this a few times... and its a buggar.
But I have time to check out the driver hehehehe.
(you know what I mean mate)
They are sometimes real cool and they move their car over to allow me throu.
So then I achknowledge them for that.

Good ride in this morning, not lane splitting(especailly not on borrowed bike), not in a hurry, enjoying the ride.

Sitting back and seeing how things go, Thanks to all the cages who move over, I do, and you do notice, but often difficult to acknowledge.

Are you going to paint a little stylised mirror on your fairing?
Like the fighter pilots did to record a 'kill'.

I know how you feel - I've whacked lots of mirrors, and usually feel a bit guilty, particularly as it sounds so loud that you think you've broken summat for sure. But car mirrors are more robustly constructed than bikes ones, so it's very unkely your mirror hitting a car's one will break the cars mirror. I have broken my bike's mirrors a few times though.

Bike mirrors arn't cheap either :( I've never had to replace mine but we've had to replace Sam's twice (just two mirrors... not 4 mirrors) and for the FXR they are like $80 - $100

Bloody expensive little things

Must be the time for it, as i did the same thing heading home last night. Only the second time, the first was a taxi, he's started abusing me at the next set of lights but he had so many other dent's in his car I just told him to F*** off.

lol whats it with people and dented cars... this one time (at band camp lol) on the bus the bus driver pulled out the bus stop (as they do) and the car behind (or to the side rather) didn't stop/slow down and scraped along the side of the bus and the bus driver stopped and thr cage driver got out and seriously kicked in the back lights on the bus and he was ranting and raving about his car... and it was an early 80's model honda something crap... some of the panels were white the rest of the car was brown and it had dents and crap all over it... looked like it was going to fall apart and yet he threw a right tantrum at the bus driver... you couldn't even tell where the damage was on his car because of all the other damage... lol

Had to replace a few on the VFR750 - luckily at least two were replaced under other people's insurance. I've damaged at least two from lanesplitting; the last one was already damaged/weakened from hitting things while lanesplitting (they were exactly the wrong height) and just fell off one day when I lightly clipped a car mirror with it.
I also replaced one on the VF500 - when I went to adjust it the glass shattered.

The ones on the VifFerraRi seem to be in a good position for NOT being vulnerable.

Broke the Subaru's mirror one day when backing into a park - the plastic cowl hit the edge of the truck I was backing around and broke the mounting tabs off. Fixed that with Marley's guttering adhesive and the glass fell out. Cut a new glass and glued it in with Liquid Nails.

Man, that's a lot of bad luck if you're superstitious. Even though I'm not, maybe that explains why life is so unbelievably crappy lately. :weird:

Hah.
The viffferbabe was the last one on the bus one day, and Peter (that big Samoan) was driving. He turns into Albert St, and swings wide so he doesn't hit the kerb (or the curb either). Some :weird: in a ute behind him cuts up the inside, then goes nuts, tooting the horn, carrying on. So Peter stops and gets out to see what's the matter. The guy accuses him of cutting him off, and gets really aggro. He reaches into the ute to grab what looked like an axe handle. Peter goes, "Don't try that shit with me, mate!!" and Mr :weird: leaps back in his ute quickly and locks the door. Then when the bus takes off, he starts ramming the side of it with his ute!! before driving off at great speed, through two red lights. What a tosser!
Must've been on P or summat...

It's possible.
My black VFR was either jinxed/cursed, had black voodoo, negative mojo, or was just plain lazy and liked lying down in the road for a rest. It had been crashed before I bought it (and badly repaired) and I crashed it four more times.

placidfemme
3rd August 2005, 13:25
yeah road rage is amazing... some people do really stupid things...

those Birkenhead bus drivers are kewl guys... the one guy used to smoke on the bus because Sam and I were the first people on the bus for about 10 minutes, and he used to let us stand at the front of the bus with him, with both doors open and smoke with him lol

*smoking is bad* lol

that is shit for luck :(

I never dropped the FXR while I was riding it (well only once but at the basic handling skills lessons when I couldn't ride and tried emergency braking and went flying over the handlebars lol), but since Sam's had she's dropped it a few times, only once needing repairs and she's been hit once...

I too have taken the odd mirror but mainly in retribution to bad behaviour by a cage driver !! :weird: .... Earlier this year I got 4 in a week !! :Punk: I get sick of the buggers moving over on you when you are beside them !! ... They never seem to hear the horn ... but when their mirror goes BANG and flies down the road they notice you quick enough !! :devil2:

isn't that the sound of the car mirror banging back though? they all seem to be on those springy things [technical term] so they don't get broken if they just get knocked?

Mebbe.
But they're designed more to spring back if knocked from the front, as they're not usually knocked forwards. Except by angry bikers.
But in any case, it's rather annoying for the car drivers if their mirrors are folded up or knocked, and suddenly useless. Heh - I've done that before: carefully folded a car mirror out of the way when I can't get past.

I still like that idea of "wheover it was" (can't remember) about opening the back door or passenger door of a car driven by some eejit who's trying to cut you off. Harmless, inventive, intensely annoying to the driver, and amusing to you.

Yeah I remember that thread... then people were jumping in and saying that kind of behaviour was bad blah blah blah lol

I think thats a better option than breaking a mirror off... but possibly a more dangerous option... you'd have to be closer to the cage to open the door (as opposed to kicking/hitting the mirror off) and when you open it (the door)... wouldn't it hit your bike? Or twist your arm back? And wouldn't that only work if the cage was on your left... otherwise you would need to use your throttle hand... causing a loss of speed...

I dunno lol

That would be my dearly beloved Vifferman! He is all of the above - harmless, inventive, extremely annoying to the driver, and amusing to me!

I don't know about you PF, but I'd be a little more careful when lane splitting - I know I would be pretty pissed off if someone knocked my mirrors because they thought the gap was bigger than it really was. You never know what they might do to the next bike they see.
