View Full Version : Trade Me - waiting for payments?

Maha
30th July 2012, 07:25
Not a big user of the site but, I sold an item via auction on Thursday evening.
I sent the winning bidder an email with my contact details when the auction finished.
Still had not heard from said winner as of yesterday (Sunday) morning, so I text him.
Got a text back saying he was ''trying to organise a car with a tow bar''
No money has been forwarded so as far as I am concerned, the item is still not sold?
I text him again say that I have the option of relisting the item on Tuesday....no response.

Question is...how long is a reasonable wait for payment/collection?

If they have lots of good feedback etc a week for a hard to pick up item. If a week and still having problems send your details again and ask for full payment prior to collection.
If they have lots of bad feedback tell them you need to relist if not payed in full by Tuesday.

I say 7 days. Generally speaking peoples pay cycles are eitther weekly or biweekly so this gives the winning bidder a chance to pay.

If the bidder really wants it they would have paid something by now. If they have not already made some sort of payment arrangement, relist.
:mad:Sounds like a time waster:mad:

Just ask the buyer to pay you by bank deposit and collect when they can, once you've got their money picking it up is their problem, unless you really want whatever it is gone quickly.

Just ask the buyer to pay you by bank deposit and collect when they can, once you've got their money picking it up is their problem, unless you really want whatever it is gone quickly.

The problem with that is you end up providing free storage. Some people pay, and then still don't collect. Go figure. No the issue is you don't own the goods anymore, and have far less room to do anything.

At least if they don't pay, you still own it, and have more options, like re-listing.

My 'relist' Text seemed to have worked, the buyer wants my account number (I emailed it to them on thursday night, but hey)..stalling perhaps?

Its quite common to put something along the lines of
"Contact within 1 day and payment within 3 days or will be relisted" at the top or bottom of a listing.

Then you know exactly where you stand.

For next time maybe =]

i sell a lot on Trade Me

My payment terms are clear

Payment received in three working days or an arrangement for later payment made at my discretion

If not received, five working days notice given via the trade me system(apply for a refund of success fee)

If still not paid, negative feedback placed and blacklisted.

I get around one a month, which is not bad considering i sell around 100 items a month.

and I never text anyone,I prefer email as it gives a record of what is said.I know texts do too but I have had a couple in the past that reckoned they shared their phone with their five year old.Yeah right...

Clearly the Aussie owners of the business are more than happy to leave idiots like that on there.

This is what I do,and I give them 24 hours or the deals off, then I black list them from contacting me or posting bad feed back about "their" lack of commitment which apparently is my fault.
I buy and sell a lot of things on TM and so far I've had only one or two deals go bad.
Also when selling things on TM you don't have to put up with the type of trolling so many on this site get sport from.
You just don't answer their question then black list the clowns on the spot.
I seldom get repeats when they can't repost on my auctions,,,funny that.

Ask for confirmation of when you can expect your money...

If you don't get it - tell them you are relisting.

tow bar or not whatever - but payment details should at the least be sorted up front.

Thank you come again

Good luck.
Mark, usually three days for payment to be received, then a note to buyer, hey wtf and then relist and Black list as well as Neg feedback.
Don]'t (as if! ) hold back, give em both barrels.
You can change it once.

I have bought several things and sold several things over 8 years or so.

I want the thing gone from the house ASAP! I have already bought its replacement and have to wait until this one is gone to get it delivered. Needless to say, I am impatient to have my brand new shiney table and chairs in my dining room and not on display in a store. Interestingly enough the negative feedback this trader has is about the same thing. Non payment/pickup/contact regarding the purchase.

I didnt read the whole thread, but if i require money quickly, I tend to state in the auction that payment is required within xx days of auction finish, that these are the terms of sale, if you cant meet these, dont bid.
Really you shouldnt bid at all if you dont have money in the bank, and as soon as i win, I pay immediately, unless I have made an arrangement with the seller prior to the end of the auction.

Seven days, relist it. If he comes up with the money before it sells the second time then pull the auction (make sure you put a note on it to say it may be withdrawn).

I always work on 3 days. No need to involve TradeMe, just make it clear it will be relisted if they piss around. That way you get to give them a negative feedback and sell it to someone else.

That's a different story then, give them until a week after the auction finished to front up and take it away, if not then relist with a buy now the same as their winning bid, clearly stating it is to be gone within 3 days.

Kind of looks like he is buying and hoping to on sell before he has to front up with the money, and dicking you around for a month in the meantime....

Checking feedback is a good thing, and even better is when someone is bidding on one of your auctions, and you get asked a 'question' from another member on another auction warning you not to deal with them

A few years back my brother scored a front windscreen from a big V8 supercar crash at Pukekohe, listed it on trademe and the winner put a couple hundred in his bank and said he will give him a txt when he can pick it up. The windscreen sat in the shed for a year and he sold it again, haven't heard from the original buyer since a week after he paid for it. Winning

Purchased off a retardme auction, they had all the make contact in 24 hrs, money in their account by three days or they leave negative feedback yadda yadda, then i get an email, i live in the stix with no reliable transport so can't post the goods for two weeks, actually it was three weeks received. So whenever i see those conditions i just give them a wide berth.

Not that I sell anything on TM (yet), but that stuff really irks me. It's an auction site, so the point is largely about letting people bid what they think the item is worth - good luck; if it's enough (reserve met) and more than someone else bids, you win.

Stuff like asking what the reserve (or "final price") is seems to miss the point. (I've even seen someone "threaten" to bid in small increments until the TM "within 15%" message came up, to "force" the seller to reveal their reserve).

(Also annoying, but off topic, but I'm bored so I'll mention it: is people who mix-up "no reserve" with "starts at $1". As in, someone lists an item starting at $100, with no reserve, basically meaning anyone who bids could own the item; and someone will post to complain about the $100 minimum. Idiots. But seems to be a bit of a TM user-generated thing.)

I currently have an Item on TM, I got a text this morning from number +502 saying ''Email me with your final price'' ma.tommy007@gmail.com

Trick or treat?

I text back saying 'Make an offer'.

I just googled that email address and the results show (along with this page) a site that lists known scammers email addresses: http://www.419scam.org/419-gmail-com.htm

Totally a scam.

We have a car up on TM at the moment. Jess has gotten 3 texts just like that and reported them all to Trade Me. Def a scam.

Based on the responses we have gotten from TM I think they are getting a lot of complaints at the moment.

Yeah my partner sells stuff she makes through another NZ website and they have been dealing with this for ages. The scam seems so silly you wouldn't think people fall for it, but obviously they must since the scammers keep trying.

What they do is:
- Ask for the most expensive item, lots of items, or 'buy now'
- Send you a faked invoice showing (too much) money has been paid by PayPal or bank transfer
- Ask for you to repay the extra by Western Union (often even allowing you to keep a little of the overpayment for your troubles)
- Spend your money on hookers and cocaine.

So - they aren't even interested in your paint Maha. It's your bank account they are after.

My latest listing as a classified.... not an Auction, thought I could stay clear of the inane questions and swap offers that way.

There might be another way, but if you click on My Trade Me then > View My Trade Me one of the options near the bottom of the page is "My Blacklist".

I'm the opposite. If it is a bigger purchase and I want to fly to the other side of the country to check it out I'd like to know if the guy is dreaming and has an unrealistic price on it/wasting my time, or if it is an acceptable price that I would be happy to pay/negotiate with and drive/ride away. Why fark around.

Because I got a text from a scammer? can't stop that. But dreamers are less likely to make contact via email.

Nah I was talking about the dreamers and swaps. I had the same thought with the last car I sold but I found the classified as bad if not worse.

with you there. One of the bikes I bought in particular looked WAY nicer in the photos than it did in person. WAY nicer.

If you can check it out before purchase, then that'd be one of those sales where the contact details are listed. In that case you can ask (privately) what the likely price is, without necessarily messing with the auction process.

I do know ... why don't you go to Trademe and look it up ...

Why did you come here to ask a simple question you could easily find the answer for yourself? Why did I bother? Because it's Friday after a long week and my brain has died ... and it occurred to me to do it ...

Fuck knows .. I'm happy with an unexplained world ..

If you have something for sale on Trademe and it sells, you pay Trademe a % fee of the total transaction amount.

Thank you for your help, it's a classified so $79 it is, I don't mind paying that.

Classified:

$39 for asking prices under $1,500
$59 for asking prices $1,501–$10,000
$79 for asking prices $10,001–$30,000
$99 for asking prices over $30,000

Trademe's definitely gotten more expensive over the years, but the price is worth it for something like a classified.
