Bought a new handbrake for my bike but it doesn't reach to activate the brake light switch, it's like it needs an extra bit weilded on so it can reach....I've been sold the right part according to the guys who looked it up on the parts manual, and when I google it seems to show the same handbrake, so Im wondering if the switch isn't the original.
Went to Jaycar, to find a switch but there were soo many components farked if I know which one, oh and then there's the reverse thingee too so its like when the handbrake is released the switch turns off.....
Help.....

Can you not slot the holes on the brake light switch and move it? When you pull the lever one would expect the little knob (quiet in the cheap seats) on the switch to pop outwards.
Alternatively, you could drill/tap a small hole in the lever and put a tiny screw in there (with loctite) to make it activate
What flavour bike is it?

its a bit difficult to give good help when you dont bother to tell us make, model, year etc of the bike in question.

My lever has a little peg that is supposed to press the brake light switch, but it was 1mm out of reach.
So I wrapped a cable tie around the peg to add thickness, and use that to touch the switch instead.

One does simply rear end a Marmoot.
He's far too fast to get rear ended.

No. Superglue or epoxy for securing it.

She means it's not a push to work, it's a push to not work. Normally closed instead of normally open. Have you never seen a brake light switch on a motorcycle before????

looks like it may have a mid to late 90s gsx750 or bandit 600 master cylinder on it.

If the bike is a 550 Katana it looks like the right lever but it's a different master cylinder assembly.

I thought you said you were making me cupcakes ... :innocent:
I doubt if Cycletreads gave you the wrong part ... just the other parts may be from a different bike. On the main body of the brake resevoir assembly may be a part number. Which should identify the bike(s) it was intended for.
It may pay to check out a price for a complete unit (assembly) for your model. "Old Stock" prices may be not as bad as you may think. (less pissing about for the right bits too)

Well, in Cycletreads defense they probably didn't know that you have a different master cylinder on it.
This is what the original master cylinder would have looked like.

Thanks Katman, I bought a new brake leaver based on what model you suggested, it looks like it could be the right one. Will fit it on the weekend and see how I go. Now all I have to do is make up a seat bracket and its ready for vinning.... although I still need some fairings as the lugs have been broken off.
That brake system in the photo you took is very different from mine! Perhaps I should leave the biker mechanic stuff to the male species :pinch:

It better not happen before vinning lol!
In saying that, if I dropped this bike it'd shatter my leg! When I first got it, I could hardly push it, turns out the brakes had seized, but even now it's still too heavy to push.... wonder what the dry weight is..

Either get the correct lever, or else replace the whole lever+brake unit with a modern one. Not as expensive as you think.
