Good on them for making the most of the shitty weather and giving people something interesting to watch and smile about:clap:
Shame the "fun police" had to come along & notice just how much fun they were having (...bet some council prick asked them to spoil the "non profitable" fun )
...whats happening to this country of ours? (we used to applaude such ingenious thinking and harmless fun...not anymore huh)

Slow day huh Willy?
Shame of it is that it is most likely not that the kids having fun was a problem for the Rossers but the accumulating citizenry gathering to watch them having fun that was the problem.
Purpose built winch? must be pretty quick to haul em fast enough to wakeboard.

Purpose built winch? must be pretty quick to haul em fast enough to wakeboard.Just a 4wd winch with the reduction gears changed for a lower ratio set.

I've still got a video floating around at home somewhere of a guy on a jetski in the same area of the Taylor River, when it is in flood is about the only time theres enough water to do anything so why not make the most of it.

LOL, yeah a tad slow in the office today (nothings blowing up or breaking...think me an the techs are doing TO good a job this winter lol)
Completely understand the Popo's thinking and actions (public safety etc), its just a bloody shame that good innocent fun has to be stopped due to the stupidity and actions of others (Or the local council asking for it to be?...actually this seems more likely than "crowds of people" causing a hazard, they could scratch those picnic tables!....father was a council member, seen it before)
But I think its just great that these guys came up with this fun idea to pass the time during this shitty weather...most kids would have just torn along the bank in the 4x4 "towing" there mate along, while ripping the shit out of the park.
Glad to see they are looking for a different location to carry on the fun  (lets hope there are no innocent picnic tables or rubber neckers to be hurt at the new site lol)

Doesn't that Dangerousbastard retard do something like that?
I remember him getting stuck in a tree last year and the firemen getting him down, dunno if he's in the Aukland area though Coromandle is springing to mind for some reason.

heh... I can't guide your imagination and to be honest you've creeped me out given the direction you chose... each to his own.
S'ok, I got meself vasectomised, so I can ride with gay abandon. You can take that gay any way you like too... although I'm feeling a little queezy contemplating what's on the other side of your screen.

Is Dangerousbastard now CookMySock? He is. Might change it back yet.
Paragliding towing is a little more refined than dragging a kneeboard behind a modified 4WD winch, and a kneeboard also wont pull 6G's in a 200km/hr spiral dive. Better work stories..

Paragliding is towed by a boat yeah? How do you get up to 200k's? A boat dragging a parachute would need about three thousand horse power to get you up to that kind of pace.
Or is it, the person swinging in a spiral is traveling at an equivalent of 200k ground speed in a circle?
Or is paragliding the one where you jump off a hill? I'm still not sure about 200k's unnpropelled though.
As an aside, how has the move from enticing kids with icecreams, to arborist gone?

Both are interesting choices.

Paragliding is towed by a boat yeah? No, thats parasailing = sitting in an armchair being dragged around a lake. Boring!
How do you get up to 200k's?You roll the wing onto its' side, accelerate, and then point the bitch at the ground and be afraid. Very afraid. Cue steep spiral dive and 6G,
Or is it, the person swinging in a spiral is traveling at an equivalent of 200k ground speed in a circle? There is nothing "equivalent" about it. 200 clicks and 6Gs. Thats it. Fuck this up and bounce 50 meters into the air on touchdown.
Or is paragliding the one where you jump off a hill? There is no "jumping" per se. Youtube search "paragliding launches" and you will see the launch is stride off down the slope, and not a "jump". Any jump, and cue very rapid collapse/stall/spin/die.
As an aside, how has the move from enticing kids with icecreams, to arborist gone?Gotta pay the bills and feed the thrills. Two different things.
Cool. How is Whatakane for kite boarding? What do you ride with? Both are interesting choices.Sup! Learner to experienced Kite boarding here is good in the ohiwa harbour in any NW conditions, and ok along the beach in WNW to ENE. Travel to Rotorua for S conditions. Yeah KS is an ideal accompaniment to PG. Both will kick your arse really hard if you are not fully awake, which of course is the whole point. If you like cornering a bike really harrrrd, you will love paragliders. :eek5:
I don't say who I go Paragliding with, because morons scrape this information off public forums and misuse it to make our life difficult. If punters are genuinely interested, send me a PM and I'll organise an intro.

There is a bloke with an irrigation storage pond beside SH1 south of Ashburton who has installed a winch and jumps etc for wakeboarding/water skiing/whatever
Good effort I say

Paragliding looks awesome. I can't believe I've never considered it. I had a quick look online and saw there are a few schools here in Auckland. Do you have a PG2 certificate? I can imagine I could kill myself with this sport, but I can add that to the kitesurfing, free climbing, and motorcycling list of things my mother may disapprove of.

It's also cheap - ride at the beach = free, whole day on the winch = $20. Currently I'm starting on acro and then cross country. Yes, I'm PG2, working on my advanced, and then my assistant instructors rating. And yes, its not called "adventure sport" for no reason. About as risky as riding a big road bike fast on the track, or being a dick on the road - mostly you will be fine, but fuckups are not very forgiving.
Take some advice and ask for a trial day before you choose a school - they are completely different in character and in purpose.
Also realise that this can take up to a year to get your ticket, and many of the lessons you will learn are nothing to do with paragliding.

Thanks for the info and advice. I'll look to do my PG1 in October once I'm back from my sea kayaking/kite surfing holiday in Turkey and travelling around Europe. I'll ask for trial days at the various schools around. I'm surprised by the sheer amount of schools around Auckland.
