View Full Version : Fuel economy for a GN125?

Hope this is in the right place here…

I’m thinking that there may be something wrong with ze bike.
I’m getting quite low KMs per tank - about 200ish for 10 litre tank? From what I read online this is pretty damn low for a GN125. Or is this normal?

My thoughts on causes are -
My idle is set too high
It’s due to the fact that I have to rev it to pieces on the motorway
I’m not filling it up properly (highly likely :killingme)
Something is actually wrong.

Anyone got any other ideas on what could be causing it?

Sounds pretty good to me, I get about 150km from 10L. The mileages you've read online might be at a lower speed, which is generally more economical.

Oh really!? Ohk cool! Internet must've lied to me again

Everyone seemed to be saying they were getting between 300 and 400km. But that's prob going 50km not on the motorway.

Ignore me :) I'll go back to my corner now haha.

5L per 100km, yeah, I'd say it was using a bit too much fuel for a little bike, however, it's the GN125 and you're using it on the motorway, so yes, it's going to be thirsty work for a little bike.

At an economical cruise my 1200 will use around 5L per 100km, it climbs if your right hand can't stay still...

Doubt you would get anywhere near 5ltrs though.

Lozza, fill your bike up, go for a tootle kind of run, not having the throttle nailed to the stop, fill up again afterwards & compare the fuel usage with your daily commute. If your riding with the throttle wide open for extended periods it will guzzle but a wee run on & off throttle & up down the gears should show better economy or highlight that you do have a problem.

How much fuel are you actually using to go how far? If a GN125 has a 10 litre tank then you're going to be putting less than that in when you fill up.

Are you using your trip meter to record km traveled between fueling up? You need that number and the litres it takes to fill the tank back up to your definition of full to work out fuel economy. It doesn't actually matter which point you're filling the tank to as long as you're doing it consistently.

It's going to be a waste of time trying to work out if you should be doing something differently if you're using approximate numbers.

A comparison help?
250cc vee twin, 6mths old, 7000k's serviced at correct points. aggressive rider.
at city speeds I get 224k out of 7 liters
at open road speeds on flat roads aka, Canterbury plains, I get 194k per 7 liters.
at open road speeds with hills, aka Christchurch to Akaroa return, I get 185k per 7 liters.
Me thinks your bike needs a tuneup...

And I thought my GSXR600 SRAD was bad. 8L/100kmh with open road riding, and 9L/100km around town. Doesn't seem to make much difference how I ride it either.

Are you comparing how many L of petrol you put in to how many km on the trip meter?
My GN250 was using 3.7L/100km on average, most riding at 90-100km/h.
In comparison the 600 uses 5.5L/100km

You need to keep an accurate record of the fuel used, the fuel type, the distance between each fill up, and the type of riding before you can be sure of your fuel consumption.

I find my bike is much better on 91 than 95 octane, and it goes further on Z or Caltex than any other brands.

FJRider

Different sorts of riding affects the fuel use.

Around town ... up and down through the gears, using higher rev's in the lower gears.
On the motorway into a headwind with the throttle wide open.
Racing through the gears when there's no need.
Riding with the choke on longer than you need.

Go everywhere with a tailwind and you'll be fine ...

Given my bike is 12 times the capacity and weighs 4 times as much, I do 6.5 to 7.5 l/100km on the open road.

However we use almost exactly the same amount of power to pull both through the air at 100 kph so 4-5 seems about right.

Go figure, the current one had super rooted piston/barrel/rings/camchain and went just as well, if not better than the 2004, which was 11 months old when I got it with 1500km on it

It's not broken. It's just because you're having to sit on a wide-open throttle to keep up with traffic.

All other things being equal, little motors with wide-open throttles tend to use more fuel than bigger motors making the same power at a crack off idle.

I'm sure there's a scientific explanation for that, but I don't know what it is. It's just something I've observed. My Scorpio 225 gets the same fuel economy as my 1200 Sportster (20km/L) if I thrash the former and baby the latter.

Hurry up and get your full licence and the problem will become irrelevant.

5l per 100km.. im guessing in town commuting? pretty good..

I'll ask the mrs what she gets on her gn250 round town when she gets out of the indoor rain center

edit: on motorway, prob even better lol.. the 250 struggles on the open rd i imagine the 125 is pretty gutless... it'll drink the gas trying to get to 100 and stay there.

how big is a blades tank? I'm guessing 17 litres or 18 litres incl reserve bit. and I can clock 350-380km on the open rd.. whats that.. almost 5l per 100?

Wow that’s a lot of replies thanks guys!

So. Turns out, I just fail. Epically.
I thought I was out of petrol, but I was only about ½ to 2/3 empty. -_-

So my bike is pretty good on petrol… Yes, I do have to rev it to no end, and so that will mean it is using more petrol than it needs to be using but meh. That’s life right?

Is there any easy way to tell how much petrol you actually have? Apart from the ‘shake and look’?

Turns out I wasn't even filling it up properly either. No one told meee....

Most people tend to use the trip counter as a fuel gauge. my 400 is on reserve around 240kms so I fill up around 200-220. After filling up reset it to 0 and repeat.

There will be numbers out there for roughly how many KM you can get on a tank before hitting reserve. Or if you're particularly brave you can find out yourself. After that it's simply a matter of making sure to watch your trip counter and filling up before it hits the magic numbers.

Short of that, the only method is open it up and have a look inside :P

Ride bike to petrol station:
Put on center stand.
Fill tank
Reset trip meter.

When next at petrol station, not how many km it has done and how much it costs too fill it to the brim.
The GN has 9L before reserve and 3L of reserve, you should easily see 200km before reserve (My '04 was getting around 180km to reserve, but I rode it at full throttle, everywhere, whereas this one I've topped up at 220km and it wasn't yet on reserve)

May be (another) stupid question... But. Here goes... Is there some particular way to fill up the reserve or does it just fill when you fill the normal tank?

The main and reserve tanks are one and the same.
The fuel pick up for the main tank is set about an inch higher than the second pick up (reserve) so there's no need for two tanks.
Hopefully that makes sense? I could show you with my spare fuel tap, but I imagine it's a bit difficult to see that far

Don't listen to Doug, he's talking shit. There is a special way to fill up the reserve, no good having it if it is empty when you need it eh! What you have to do, is flip the valve to reserve (chances are if it needs filling it will already be set to reserve), take off the gas cap, and insert the filler nozzle pointing as far backwards as possible, I find standing in front of the bike an putting it in 'upside down' is easiest. Now on the GNs the reserve fill valve often gets stuck, so you have to tap the tank as you are filling it up. I find a good tempo for this can be achieved in sequence with aiming the nozzle left and right a bit to ensure it fills, so repeat out loud, "left, right, left, right" etc, and with each word swap direction of the nozzle and give the tank a good thump.
Then when the tank is full, put the cap back on, switch the valve over to normal, take the cap off, and fill the main tank.

Not the lefty righty one.

Just saw your post on the fuel gauge thread concerning running out of juice. From what google tells me your fuel capacity is 10 ltrs so from a full tank check how much you use when you fill up again against how far you have travelled, yup, I know your odometer is sulking but I'm sure that can be sorted. Once you work out your litres per 100k or k's per litre you have a gauge to work by. My bike has an 18 ltr tank & I fill up between 250 & 300 k's. I start to worry when it gets close to 300 but have never hit reserve.
Yeah, i know this has all been said in previous posts but I have recently been in the same situation with a new bike & it's embarrassing spending more time to get my wallet out than it takes to fill, er, top up the bike.

The awkward moment when I went in earlier in the week to the petrol station with the fellah (after all your comments) to fill it up to the right level and had the petrol station attendent have a huge rage at me cause I was under their "minimum delivery" amount. Was hilarious though, I have the ability to cry on demand when yelled at (like all women lol) and his manager walked out just as I burst into tears.
