We weaved to the center of the rd to avoid the cyclist... well bugger me the copper on the bike ran at the cyclist grabed him hauling his arse to the ground causing him to tumble head fist... looked like a sweet gutsa..... I've seen that same guy apprehend another cyclist the other day, but he stopped. I've also seen him parked on Durham St in the morning observing traffic, watched him pull over a new Rangie. And I've also seen him lights blazing in my rear view mirrors on my bike just after I accidently pulled a wheelie over Bealy Ave. Wasn't too impressed despite it being a onearmed wheelie and all, what gives with that?

Poor Cyclist, he's probably got a very hefty fine & court appearance coming up.
If you saw it happen, you may the vital evidence the cyclist needs. You know how cops twist the story. This guy may be up on assaulting an orifice.

LMFAO! So let me get this straight- Mr Copper wants to stop the cyclist to give him a ticket for not wearing a helmet, as it is illegal to NOT wear a helmet as you may suffer serious head injuries if you fall off. So his ingenious strategy for stopping said cyclist when he refused to stop, was to TACKLE HIM, causing him to go over the handle bars, potentially causing serious head injuries????   Oh fuck, thats funny!
In all seriousness D and Sniper- you guys should head down to the local cop shop and file a report. The cyclist probably got himself arrested.

It's quite pragmatic, really. A practical demonstration of the importance of wearing your helmet.
I wonder if he said to the cyclist, "See! That's what happens when you don't wear a helmet. Some bastard could tackle you to the ground, causing you to hit your head!"

Slight difference between a burglary (messing with someone else's life, infringing on their right to be, own, etc.), and not wearing a helmet on a bicycle (opening yourself to injury)...

EDIT: The way the Gov't sees it is: a $35 helmet MAY save a $35,000 worth of head surgery - so a $55 ticket is worth it if it gets somebody to wear a helmet.

The cyclist was committing an offence. He was signalled to stop but failed to do so. He was then arrested for failing to stop, facilitated by tackling him off his bike. Its a totally justifiable use of force, I've seen a couple of scooter riders get stiff armed in similar circumstances, stiff shit for the idiot cyclist.

Yeah same sentiments here, having had 2 mountain bike accidents which ended up with the helmet in 2 and 9 pieces I know the value of a helmet, geez I'm retarded enough as I am but imagine how bad I would be if I didn't wear one, if I actually didn't get killed. ditto 100% ...had too many pushbike accidents from cars hitting me for no damn reason to not wear a helmet, dont care if I look funny, keeps my head warm in the cold frosty mornings too
....those that dont, deserve whatever they may get from not wearing one, but dont think I would have gone to the extreme the cop did, musta been freaky to see

I would feel a little stink...but in the same way that I can get over a speeding fine that I got on the way to somewhere that I shouldn't have needed to go in the first place were it not for my own forgetfulness...i.e. the fine may have happened 'cos I was out there but it could have been avoided 'cos I was being a dumb bitch...I can get over that muppet...i.e. he may have not suffered brain damage if I didn't hit him, but the fact that he's a dumb bitch and was not wearing a helmet is not my fault...
all this assuming that it was his fault he got hit...if it were my fault, it'd be different.

Nice thread dredge.
Its an offence because your politicians made it so.
Failing to stop changed things from a straight forward infringement notice to an arrestable offence.
Your politicians also give the police the power to use force to affect an arrest.

Surely its not necessary to enforce everything to the letter of the law. A blind eye in some cases. Wouldn't that be possible still . Pretty minor offence to involve the effort that was witnessed. Or you just winding us up ?

We don't know the circumstances of what took place, if it was just Joe public then you could quite right thinking its over the top to enforce laws like cycle helmets etc without any tolerance.
But.... if the person involved was some low life burglar or drug dealing piece of crap that pays no heed to any law then personally I would support the police taking a zero tolerance approach with such a person whenever they are found offending regardless of how minor it might seem.

This an old thread, but your response is what causes the cop bashing. Of course we dont know the full circumstances. Appearance wise pretty heavy use of force for a trivial event. Sort of why the average Joe Bloggs is worried about the taser. I'm not bashing cops here just a view point shared my many of my friends. You have to have the support of the public or your job would be a lot worse.

"All men are equal and free: society by nature, and destination, is therefore
autonomous and ungovernable. If the sphere of activity of each citizen is
determined by the natural division of work and by the choice he makes of a
profession, if the social functions are combined in such a way as to produce
a harmonious effect, order results from the free activity of all men; there
is no government. Whoever puts a hand on me to govern me is an usurper and a tyrant; I declare him my enemy."
From 'Les Confessions d'un Revolutionnaire", 1849
This is actually the tip of a major iceberg.
I am sure we all agree that those who murder, rape or steal deserve the attention of the law, and any force required to bring the criminal to justice. I unreservedly support the police in these endeavors, and I absolutely support the use of force.
But what of the "crimes" that don't involve violence, risk to others, or dishonesty. How much force should we use in these situations ?
Do we extrapolate the idea that they are doing something that may increase the cost to us as taxpayers, or ACC payers as our "risk to others" as justification for police use of force?
If we feel this way, we certainly should not be on a motorcyclist web site. As we are 16-30 times more likely to cost the taxpayer money for every km we ride, according to this doctrine we should be banned.
We insist that the helmetless cyclist be treated as a criminal who can be violently apprehended for his own good, without considering ourselves as motorcyclists , scuba divers, private pilots, or rugby players!
Perhaps we should ask what right we have to use violence, or authorise violence against people who offer us no threat, no violence and no animosity. People who mjust want to make decisions about their own lives, without harming ours.
