Hi everyone

I've been pootling around for about a week now :scooter: and thought it'd be a good idea to join in your treasure trove of motorbiking info! So here I am. Hi!

I don't know anyone who bikes, so it'd be nice to meet a few people to go for rides with. I'm not too flash at the moment (and just moved across town, so am trying to amp myself up for rush-hour traffic communiting  ), but would love to get some pointers from someone. At the moment, I'm just practising by myself on quieter roads and it's going pretty well.

Ok, I think that's it from me for now. Oh! Except for one question... probably a silly one... but what does everyone do with their visors in the rain?? I went out today (steady rain in good ol' Welly) and found that if I put my visor down, raindrops landing on it made it hard to see; if I put my visor up, rain in my eyes made it hard to see... What should I do?

Ok, thanks! Bye!

Hi tricksy, had to laugh sorry for doing so, but your visor will attract rain drops, nothing will stop that. They will bead off just slow down u will get used to it happening .. Others will tell you to spead up that will make them bead off faster, do not do that unless you are comfortable. That would not be good advice. Next whilst you are enjoying what you are doing try and enrol in a good motorcycling course or find a chap /Lass that is proficient in mentoring. In Welly you have a lot of good men /woman that would help. Start with contacting the welly ulysses, a good place to start.

Good luck with your motorcycling experience and you'll need to be very defensive if commuting in the city. Treat every car as though they haven't seen you.

With regard to visor question, ride with it half open in the city and on the open road you'll find the moving air should dispense rain drops. Slightly open also helps with fogging problems.

Enjoy.

Hi, buy a bottle of RainX from Repco rub some on with a cloth and let dry then lightly polish off. I find the rain will come off the visor quicker and alot easier to see. Also if you do not have a pinlock visor insert. Buy a bottle of fogoff from Repco as well. Ask the man at the counter if you cant find them.Rub fogoff on the inside of visor and polish off. I redo visor once a week if its a rainy week. Also leave your visor open just a wee bit while riding when the visor seems to fog up this will clear the fog up. Have fun and ride safe and enjoy two wheels.

i was wondering about that shit myself. i spray everything with lemon pledge (incl visor). you can't buy the liquid anymore it seems, apparently it was too good as an accelerant. aerosol doesn't work as well, but still good for the first half hour of rain.

anyway. welcome, n00b. it's all downhill from here. =)

Welcome tricksy,
Rainex/fogoff good shit!! Leaving the visor open slightly does also help, but round town you may need to open it 1/3 of the way to get enough airflow. it's heading towards summer and there is usually weekday (wednesday) night 'cruisey' rides for learners, slower riders organised from the Avalon duckpond... Enjoy the riding, and yup everything else on the road is 'out to get you'.....

Never tried RainX/fogoff.. May have to when i get back out to riding... :/

Anyway, Welcome!

As mentioned there are rides for Learners during summer/fine days, However i was pretty sure they were Tuesday nights? (Will search for them later). They contain many of new people, People who are getting back to riding after a time off or for those who just wish to learn. And not to forget those elder and wiser ones which teach us our wrongs! Hope to see you out and about on these

Edit: Ah! Found them! :) This is the one from Last seasons outings http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/142440-Tuesday-evening-BRONZ-Slowpaced-Social-Ride?highlight=tuesday+night+ride

Welcome to KB Tricksy. I quoted GrayWolf because he has said all the things I was going to say to your original post except I will add a couple of points, no point in posting otherwise
When using fog-off give it time to completely dry, no more fumes, or they will make your eyes water which is kind of self defeating. I try to remember to put the fog off on the night before. I also carry a container of cat crap (that Is what it is called) which is a paste for smearing inside the visor and then wiping off, this is in case I get caught without having used the fog-off. The cat-crap was available from most motorcycle stores and I think Leather Direct in Cuba Mall also stocks it, got mine from Wellington motorcycles yonks ago.
Last year the low paced rides had a variety of starting points, the Avalon Duck Pond is their home base so to speak but last year Ratti organised them so some started at Kaiwharawhara and went around the bays or out the coast. Keep your eye peeled as she usually posts a reminder around day light saving start. They start after day light saving so there is more daylight to ride in.
Find a car park or other area of open tar seal and practice the basic handling skills. Look out for some of the more advanced course, hopefully there will be some ACC subsidised ones this summer ($20 for a $300 dollar course is awesome ). You will find that even these more advanced courses have you concentrating on your basic handling skills (at a higher level), counter steering, emergency braking and all that stuff saves lives so practice. Oh and you will find counter steering really useful in the Wellington breeze (gales to others) when it gusts around building etc.
Enjoy your riding.

One of those mini hat umbrellas works a treat, trick is though...keep you head tilted slightly forward.

oooops see I'm old and senile,,,, You're correct Ratti did change the night for the 'newbie' rides, although I think there was the 'usual' Wednesday night 'slower ride' in operation still?

Have a look through and get an idea of what they are about.
I know people that have done them, really enjoyed them and learnt a lot.

Hehe, I *thought* it was probably a silly question, but thanks for all the replies. I will have to get me some of this stuff for my visor

And thanks for all the welcome messages. I'll try and get along to a group ride soon and actually meet some of you!

Did my first commute to work today (and got drenched)! But I cheated and went the long way to avoid all the traffic, hehehe :sweatdrop
