Those articles raise some assuming questions.
Looks like Paula Bennett is either lying misleading us or needs to join a forum like this to learn how nasty people can get. Being as the refer to Paula by female titles and Paula has a feminine name I would have thought her school life would have taught her how nasty people can be unless she either went to a boys school or was the ring leader.
If your income comes from the public purse then how can it be considered private?
Lastly how come BE is so lowly paid when he is in IT?  that's not from the articles.

this article is from 2009? what am I missing? it was clear that Mrs. Bennett did no wrong, privacy is overrated and outdated
and a question, how are benefits capped? this really i find intriguing, in germany we have something called Hartz4, if someone runs out of unemployment benefit Hartz 4 kicks in. However it is Public knowledge what one gets when on this type of benefit, and this applies also to spouses and children.
it seems that in NZ benefits are at the discretion of the social worker ?

I worked 5 years in my last job, before I was earning enough pay after tax to match what the government is giving that lady. And I had to pay child support out of that, for a kid I was helping to raise.
But I don't need to read that article to smell bullshit in the system. My kids mum is nearly 30, and until beginning of this year she has never had a job in her life (not even working full time now!). Why would she... popped out two bastard kids and ringed their dads and signed up as a student for even more coin.
It's a bit of a face palm to explain she has a better home, with a better car, better food in the fridge, and a bit of pocket money. More so when I then explain I'm progressing through a 3rd trade and have worked full time since before either kid was born.
If you say she's busy looking after the kids - that's bullshit. She plonked both kids in preschool (government pays for some of it!) and pleaded the need for some sanity to her friends to get them to take the kids out each week.
On the upside, I have my bikes.

I had a nice wee lapse of sanity last year and got allowed $150 a week from the gubbermint, which was far better than nothing I must say.
That sent all my savings out the window, and many plans.
I'm attempting to pool money to start a small business, yet some cum-bucket-baby-spitter is getting $565 more a week than I was? Great system, make the mad, unstable guy live on rice, give the other everything else.

business start up grants/allowances and loans from teh govt.
not the kind of thing you walk in off the shelf and get. you need a business plan (no mean feat) etc and it needs to be approved. it was the MSD (ministry that handles winz) and something else. check out business.bovt.nz under "support"
particularly with the nats in.. they're all about jacking their business buddies off... business makes the world go round eh?

One of the business scheme grants would make sense...however the OP made it rather sound like a payment post failure.

And you're a stinking hypocrite.
The woman took her situation into the political arena - she was asking for study benefits to be reinstated after personally wasting a shitload of taxpayers money.
She deserved everything she got.
If a politician was operating that kind of double standard, you'd be into one of your stupid and incoherent rants about it.
If the government had granted further assistance to someone already earning that coin (and who had recieved, and wasted, nine and half grand for a failed business venture), you'd be the first to complain.

this is another $ amount that to me makes no sense, what for did you receive $ 150 - food , accommodation, living expenses ? What for?
how are benefits calculated in NZ? What is the basis for any monetary assistance, it seems to be arbitrary and up to the individual caseworker?
are there no puplic tables that show who can expect what in cases of a.unemployment i.e. x% of last wages after tax, dpb. i.e. x $ per child,
how is a accommodation benefit calculated, as i believe this might be a bigger benefit paid out by large, especially in Auckland where affordable rents have become something of an urban legend.
It seems to me that with just these anecdotes we are falling under the divide and conquer policy. And I do believe that benefits are needed, as people don't have any assurance of job stability, permanent good health, that maybe the desired child is born sick, and heavens forbid we get old, and really do we want to compete with our grand children for a MacDo job when we are 75.
But i would appreciate transparency on account of the Government (any shade of colour) as to how benefits are calculated, adjusted for inflation, taxed (if applicable) and paid out.

how was this calculated...what was the basis for this amount. obviously it is not enough, so how did they came up with the number.
that's what i would like to know. How is a benefit calculated. And once this question is answered and the numbers and tables made available to all, stories of the lazy people making millions on benefits should stop, because everyone will know what to expect when applying for a benefit.

Dart board of numbers? Or less money for the more needy in the hopes that they will top themselves?
I know they factor in mortgages, kids, medical expenses (maybe you have to apply for these? I did)
And the weekly living allowance vaies from area to area (I think) so an Auckland resident will get more than an Apiti resident, in theory.
It's all on the piss if you ask me, I was a high risk person (even got that in writing :D ) for doing something stupid
(suicide or something else entirely silly), was paying rent, attempting to eat (fortunately my mind set made that cheap) and play with bikes (seems therapeutic for me) and I got less than a younger person living at home
I don't get it.

Why in the right mind is she getting almost 200$ more than a person that works a 40 hour week at minimum wage. Oh yea, I remember now, too many :tugger:
Just to earn that kind of $, one would have to work 8 hour days for pretty much the entire week. When will people learn, if you can't afford kids don't fucking have them.

believe me I don't get it either. They wanted you to move back in with your parents?
but this shows where the reform needs to come from. Clear and understandable limits need to be set as to what one can expect in the various moments one needs to apply for benefts. And these limits need to be available to everyone. No arbitrary judging by some caseworker who rarely sees the light of day.

there is no arbitrary judgement.
being unemployed pays 180$/week
accomodation allowances are available, as mashy said, depends where you live. downtown auckland about 140$, out manukau heads, about 30$/ week. you can receive this allowance even if you're not "on a benny" - low income, rent too expensive etc
"food cards" can be loaded with 100 odd $ up to four times a year, then you fill out some other paperwork and get onto a "high-needs" programme, which buys your groceries (and booze, smokes etc) every week.
being a fucking mattress, i think it's 360 for the first kid (plus whatever other allowances) then 110 per kid after that.
go to the WINZ website and do one of their "what's my entitlement" quizzes.
basically, if you have a penis, you're unlikely to get much out of the ministry of "social development" :killingme.

so it is arbitrary, there is no way anyone living unemployed in auckland can live of 180$ (or anywhere else in NZ). the housing benefit makes no sense eiher as it should depend on income/rent ratio not the area one lives.
as for the mattress, are you speaking only of single mothers never married, or single mothers divorced or single mothers never married but alas not in a relationship any more? Just curious. And does the allowance for kids take child support into account? and what about the married mattrasses that get the family something or other tax benefit.....it seems childless, working females don't have much luck with the msd either. :innocent:

1) yes it's very fucking difficult to live on 180$/week.
2) ever wondered about the crime rate? why these people might feel the need to steal radios, sell drugs?
3)no. any mothers. if they go to WINZ for a handout, they get a handout.
4) child support is demanded by the ministry of "justice" it is completely separate to any "benefits" she's "entitled" to. (and really, just to punish you for having a penis)
5) the "working for families" tax credits can apply to men and women, but more likely women (blame shipley or clarke or that new fat bitch... paula benefit)
6) don't like it?
