Max and I went to Thompsons Track yesterday having never been there before.. It was dry, but the trail bike guys at the bottom were taking the piss when they said 15 mins to the top.

Max's 2013 Klr650 had just ticked over having done 800km's when we got there and he only dropped it once too!

Good fun, but we were knacked after about 40 minutes, so turned around and went back down.. I'd be keen to go up again with the idea to make the summit. Next time though I'll take some water to drink.

Nice one mikemike:niceone:

15-20 mins flat out.... 8klms to the top, you prolly where close to it... just the last 30m you might wana walk before you ride....
just dont ride to far over the other side, you would need a bully to get the KLR out:laugh:

Planning on a lap of 'sand camp' & a few local backroads Saturday afternoon if anyone is keen. Knobby tyres recommended. People on 200kg+ bikes will require god-like riding skills &/or a chase helicopter. Kick off my place 1pm, finish up at the Okere falls store for a beer sometime later.

They didn't see the fracture on Saturday, so until mid-morning Monday I thought it was a sprain, and I was trying to move it around and put a bit of weight on it. My heel felt very tender compared to previous sprained ankles I've had... and now I know why <_<

It's pretty good now it's all tied up, I'm off painkillers (not that they gave me any  ) and I can use my foot to steady myself.

And just for Eddie: Me looking all corporate and colour co-ordinated for work yesterday

Thanks Andy.
The t-shirt is from Cafepress (http://www.cafepress.com/idomyownstunts/1846340). I have no idea if their sizing goes up to AIRHEAD; you'll have to ask them.

I'm seeing the Orthopedic surgeon on Tuesday, so January's plans will be discussed then. It's improving a lot day by day, so I'm cautiously optimistic, but won't be going anywhere on the bike unless I'm out of plaster and feeling fairly comfortable. We'll see.

I don't think I'll be wearing the stunts t-shirt on Tuesday

Nah, we went fer a ride today.

We started out with the Dnepr and Rick's Ural, going to the Classic meeting at Hampton Downs.
We only got 5 or 6 kms and the Dnepr started running rough (the main jet had vibrated loose on the RH side!). So by the time we fixed that, it was getting on, so we went for a ride over Old Mountain Road, and up Te Huitewai Road into Raglan West. Had a beer at the Harbour View and then home on SH23.

Magic.

But it was on the other Dirty Bike along with 500 other odd riders at the Wairamarama trail ride.

Saw a couple of other Waikato adventurers there also, hopefully it wasnt any of them that was carted away in the rescue helicopter

Nice and original apart from the tank, looks like a 97.

Its worth checking that the swing arm bolt is free as they have a tendency to seize in place. If it is a 96/ 97 they came jetted quite rich(160 main) with the expectation that owners will discard the snorkel and remove the spark arrestor(not poss after 97). Also worthwhile is removing the mesh from the air filter cage or get a uni filter cage. Oh yeah they have a resistor in the plug cap, replace it with a piece of brass the same size for a nice fat spark and easy starting.

15/40 is ok for the road but to tall off . Pity they never came with a 6speed like the dr350.

Happy trails

Has anyone ever ridden around the bottom of North Head (Kaipara Harbour)? I guess you would get on to the beach at the end of Pouto Road, and ride around and up towards Glinks Gully. https://maps.google.co.nz/maps?q=pouto+map&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x6d0c4472aa8de9db:0x500ef6143a2fa70,Pouto&gl=nz&ei=-QLuUcSvHoGsiAfz84DoBA&ved=0CCsQ8gEwAA

Even if you didn't make it all the way from Pouto to Glinks on the first attempt, you could check out the Pouto end at low tide to see if it would be feasible.

Since it's about 200 km from Auckland to Pouto, this is something that you wouldn't want to do in a single day. (It would be a big day out.)

Any thoughts? (Probably better for the warmer months ahead...)

I know this is the Waikato group, but they have ranged as far North as Muriwai. (I wonder how far out of the Waikato Basin they are willing to venture?) If nothing comes of this, I may poke around in the Auckland / Warkworth / Northland groups. However, the Waikato riders are a fun bunch who like a challenge, so I'll see if anyone is interested.

They are the ones with all the money to buy those bikes.

Would have rather the group was about half that size as its almost impossible to pass them all before the next check point when its your turn to be corner man (or so one of the other guys said )

In regard to KT and the chook chasers, it was harder than usual due to the slightly slippery forest trails, had a close call at the beginning of ride when MT90 rear cried enough and took the Big block Kender front along for the ride, near tried to snap my leg off trying to keep it all upright so felt discretion was needed after that:sweatdrop , though we did come good once things got drier.

I can see now why you guys ride those little bikes in these tighter damp conditions (most likely will be letting the DR loose with its Kenda trackmaster next time to save my legs and a bit of pride):woohoo:

Hi FF, I haven't been there but my understanding is that the eastern side is very boggy with deep holes (read lakes). So I guess it depends on what you ride there and the meat on your tyres. I'd probably look at it if I had an enduro bike but not with the 990 (at this stage). What d ya reckon Dino, sound like your picture of it?

In :sunny:sunny Whangarei at the moment for work this week.

Thought it would be rude not to bring the bike as the northland ADV ride is on this weekend :niceone:

Looks like the weather is going to come to the party for us too.

Been looking forward to it all week, its been hard to concentrate on work really

Any of you Waikato boys up for a ride this weekend.:innocent:

Not fussed when or where to, but keen to get out for a scoot :scooter:

If not then it will have to be a dirt bike weekend, as there is a trail ride on in Tauranga on Saturday
