Any of you Waikato boys up for a ride this weekend.:innocent:

Not fussed when or where to, but keen to get out for a scoot :scooter:

If not then it will have to be a dirt bike weekend, as there is a trail ride on in Tauranga on Saturday

Hi what's the trail ride btw? Could be keen for the sunday if you don't mind a noob tagging along:sweatdrop

Hey Guys, sunday would suit me best too.

Have several options, depending on how much riding you want to do.

Round the Mountain Kawhia to Raglan or visa versa - about 4 hours.

Or Port Waikato & back taking in two different routes.About 6 hours.

Or other options herading south towards Te Kuiti & Pio Pio.

Trail ride was at TECT park in tauranga, but just this afternoon they have cancelled.

Let me know. We could meet at the WhataWhata service station.

Yeh gidday Dino :) still here. Been bikeless for a couple of years but back into it again.

Not fussed about what route to do on Sunday, and might have a brand spanker along with his shiny new KLR so open to whatever. I do like a bit of rough stuff though.....

Doesn't look like I'll make it. Passed the basic handling test today but there wasn't time to do the theory + I replaced the massive stock tail light thingy yesterday for the DRC one, looks good but the bloody stock flashers don't fit so I'd be a magnet for the 5 Oh

Didn't see a single federalee. Never mind :) We went to Port Waikato via every conceivable gravel back road possible. It was 300 km's total for the day. Some of the roads were in need of a bit of repair and reminded me of some of the roads I encountered in Vietnam. Look forward to seeing along next time mate.

It's actually a Bonnie, but it had shitloads thrown at it. Thruxton rear end just makes it look that much cooler me thinks. Well, when i saw you boys I was on my way to Oscars to pick up my new errr ..... "Adventure" bike.

The sidecar unit if it can be classed as ADV might be just fun for gravel and lighter off road stuff. If I learn how to ride it in a straight line first that is.

Yep, got two, black one and a white one. Going cheap to you mate if you want one. Couple of small holes in one where I mounted the Camera (taped over, wouldn't notice), the other had a brush with a wire fence on the 42nd awhile back :) Tried and tested, both...:) They are HJC, XL (small fit) and in shiny excellent condition apart from a couple of battle scars...

Went for a quick ride around Mt Karioi today with DRSwede on his well set up DR650. Dodged all of the rain and had a great ride. We are so lucky in Hamilton to be surrounded by all this gravel and open country right on our back door step.

Bit of a ride today testing out the WRr, from lake Waikare over to Patetonga ways, some nice twisty sealed country roads then through some pretty tight gravel.

I seem to have the hang of the seal now but once I got into the tight gravel section I found my skills lacking quite a bit (neary bailed a few times :shit:), kept locking up the rear when downshifting or breaking coming into tight corners, still getting used to riding in my mx boots and getting my rev matching right. Hopefully once I get out on a ride with you guys I can get some pointers :ride:.

that rear tyre wont help you much going into gravel corners, especially with the light arse end of the WR, maybe just steer with the rear:headbang:

just keep riding mate you'll get used to it.

Sweet, how about we meet at the Mobil in Pirongia at say 9 then i was thinking maybe going through Pirongia west road to Oparau then head down the kawhia to raglan road then turn off and do the whanga coast road, how does that sound? I am open to other options if theres some other roads that you guys want to do.

Hell yea! Got a conti twinduro on the front now, feels pretty good, had to better than the bald one.... have a michelin ac10 for the back which is gonna be a bit of an overkill (didn't realise how aggressive they were).

May just have to keep the AC10 for a dirty weekend type senario :msn-wink:

dino3310
26th October 2013, 07:36
actually come to think of it the first time i used AC10s was on the king country ride and they where perfect for the 42nd, i never had any issues with them and had more traction than most, just watch that rear on the wet seal it'll let go real quick.
one of these on the rear will serve you well for adv riding http://www.bits4bikes.co.nz/ab4btyres/shinko-dual-sport-tyres/2681.aspx
im running one on the rear and ac10 on the front, ya get good milage out of the 244 good bang for buck.
from the words of the Doctor, put something you trust on the front and a round black rubber thing on the back:lol:

i wont be riding this weekend, still a bit crook:baby:

western side - YES
eastern side - wait for a long dry spell

traffic aint that bad, most people are courteous, like any where ya get the odd hoon but most of the time its pretty good, its not a high speed track so ya get a lot of dads and their boys, hot afternoons on an adv bike will get ya sweating like a fat man but early morning its quite lovely up there.
i dragged horney1 up there on his 990 with a worn scorpian only had to push him twice:laugh:
all in all its got a reputation worse than it is, normally brought on by nanas sitting at home dreaming of easy roads and lattes.... each to there own try it you will either be into it or not:msn-wink:

could be right mate.

thats the main problem up there is them holes keep getting deeper, i notest last time i was up there, there were a couple of holes on our side getting deeper, you'd have to pick the right line in a cage or it would be out with the shovel and winch.

actually come to think of it, one ride up there last year there was a 4x4 on a side track that was half buried, i think they ended up getting a dozer up there to drag it out. Them side tracks are the ones that get ya

Ah yes, Watercress  Every year we spray the big drains south of fonganui, every year someone abuses use for spraying a food source. here are some of our standard replys <_<
Its blocking the drains, you need to eat faster :bleh:
Supermarket giants are paying for this to be done to increase thier turnover
Its because they took the flouride out of the water, we now have to add it to the food chain here :nya:
And my personal favorite, they (yes the mysterious they are involved) are trying to create a strain of superbeings, we are spraying experimental growth and mind control hormones. :Punk:

well I got home a little while ago and yes, snot all over the inside of my already really dark visor along with a bit of dust from the gravelly bits makes for interesting viewing. My bloody bike has developed a mid power misfire that is not apparent at idle of under acceleration. It has a new plug and is okay under load so that would rule out the HT system??? Any thoughts?

mine had simular splutter/misfire at around 50-60kms in 4th well around those kinda revs in any gear but once opening the throttle it would disapear, mine had it from the day i picked it up so couldnt pin point it to any changes i had made.... anyways mine turned out to be a jet issue so after the carb kit shes sweet.

does it still do it with the old plug?

Yep, the old plug was the same. I think I have found the cause. The airfliter was a solid mass of dirt. Teach me for being the sweep rider all the time and the intake manifold is cracked sucking air. I'll take the manifold to the shoe repair place to have the rubber vulcanized and sealed. New airfilter and hopefully Bob will again be my uncle??

is that the gixxer can?
hows Jen enjoying her new stead

It is the new Gixxer can, the fuelling is a bit flat given the better flow with the larger 40mm outlet over the 32mm of the TL1000 can that came off, so I might have to raise the needle 1 slot or something. It's shorter and lighter and sounds deeper.

Jen is loving the new smaller steed. We need to shift the old one now which has everything fitted to it, bashplate, IMS tank, bar risers, aftermarket seat, 12v outlet on the dash, screen, rear rack, tail tidied, Cycleworks exhaust, handguards.

The DR650 has a spark issue at the moment which I believe is caused by the ignition coil and the WOF has expired and rego lapsed as other things in life keep getting in the way. I was going to advertise it at $4500 all going, but as it needs ~$400 spent on to fix, WOF and get the rego going again if it someone wanted take it off my hands and sort it themselves I'd let it go for $4k.

There's been some discussion about it here, it has new plugs and plug caps too: http://www.adventureridingnz.co.nz/forums/topic/dr650-starting-issues-poor-to-non-spark-help-me-fault-find/

Okay, I'll hold you to that :) Maybe a proper mission in late January? I fitted a laser produro exhaust to my bike so now you will hear me a mile away. Wet for a bit of a putt around Raglan and Kawhia ways today :sunny:. Only saw one other adventure bike out... Yellow... . Managed peel the last of the rubber of my old tyre (giving it shit out of the corners), and once again the rear sprocket was bearly hanging on by the time I got home (had tightened it up before I left), chucked a new sprocket on today and noticed the bolt holes in the old one had become ovals, so maybe that was why they kept coming loose?

Picture to prove I got out.

Yeah, good roads, used to get in there years ago doing possums and a bit of hunting. I think you'll find them well gated threse days. I may be wrong..

My shoulder is still pretty sore so it'll be a pretty boring ride for me tomorrow as I'm going to try to avoid tight metal roads. I will try to be in Pirongia main rd at 0630 then head south and just do some country roads. I'm going to try and get home early before it heats up too much. I'll probably be two up.

ended up doing about 350 km's. Cambridge-back roads to the Kaimais- MacLarens Falls- Galaxy road (around a locked forestry gate complete with all the warning signs about being prosecuted) onto SH5-Rotorua- SH30- fire breaks all along the side of the road (thats under rated fun!)- Mangakino- Waipapa- TeAwamutu-Hamilton. Pffft locking roads that are published on maps. How can that possibly be legal??

The fire breaks and forestry roads were the best bits although to have a master key would be the bomb! Im off to the Philippines this week until mid January so won't be on the road until then. Thanks oneblackflag for the ride!

Jennifer and I are heading over to Raglan this morning for a late brunch/early lunch. Leaving Fairview Downs at ~10:30 heading straight across town and out Whatawhata road. We'll be eating at the Shack on the main street.

No gravel today but if you want to meet up keep an eye out for us as we head down Whatawhata road at 10:45 ish or meet us at the cafe.

Thought I'd go for a ride up Thompson's Track today... Solo :eek5: not sure if it was the smartest idea for my first time, but I made it :2thumbsup.

Some logging guys even let me go up the other road there, had to turn back due to machinery blocking the way further up.

Not another soul on the track. Was a great day for it.

Only a couple wet patches that were easy enough to get through:

How much does reserve hold, Ktm will do 80ks on that (you tend to back of a bit once light goes on) so you might have more range than you think ?

Get ~50 on reserve. Neutral tank now so I can see whats in there now, but did't run down to fuel light, only place for gas was at Port Waikato. Possibly could have done 200ish.

Funny that 2 1L bottle thing, My DR (that Dino also owned once) came with 2 1L reserve fuel cans mounted at the back, as the fuel range is around 500ks on the standard 29litre tank I"m unsure where in NZ you would have call for that :shit:

Turn around and run, they haven't got your number have they:nono:, Admit it I'd be tempted though :rolleyes:and it would need a lot of mods to be rideable, 20oz flywheel, 25litre tank, remaping of injection for resonable fuel economy, bar end weights to stop vibes, new seat, and so on and so on <_<

Yep read that thread, confirms what I thought a bad Idea, and my number 1 reason would be gearing, the things scream their heads off and higher gearing wont fit.

Exciting option might be a late model WR450, best option any KTM EXC over 250cc including 2 smoke 300, they can all fit 170kph gearing which you want so your are able to cruise nice on the roads and optional parts are easy to get

Mid last year I sold my dirt bike and decided to get an Adventure bike....it is possible that I have a good look at the Husky metioned here but at the time it was overpriced as you could buy a new one for not much more. I ended up buying a Husky Terra which is ok but in many ways a but of a compromise.

what put me off one of those or a 525 or something similar is their ride ability over fair distances on tarasel to get to metal. I live in South Auckland and there is very little metal close that hooks up to make a contingent ride so I have been going down, exploring and getting reaquinted with roads like the Klondike and Port Waikato to Raglan - haven't gone round the back all the way to Kawhia but it is on my list.

I'm interested in the pros and cons between the big bore enduro bikes vs the mid size adventure bike. Also interested in the comment about putting road gear on a KTMEXC 300 - my last dirt bike was a husky WR300 and I wouldnt have considered roadifiying that as it would have vibrated like hell and been pretty hard on the backside- but loads of fun on metal roads and I could still have gone to the odd trail ride

:corn: All stuff I'm interested in.... I just want something light with ~50ish Hp that I can have two wheel sets, one 17" for street and one for Adv/Trail riding (tyre swap from adv to dirt when a trail ride is on). Would love 3 bikes, one for each job, but thats just not gonna happen, and I quite like the motardness rather than a full street bike.

So far I'm thinking ~450-500cc enduro

The WRR could come close with the BB kit, Stroker + cams ~ but:stupid::rolleyes: and only ~40hp

I quite like the road riding but I do miss the trail rides. I figure with a big bore trail bike with a bigger tank, fiddle with the gearing, decent seat might be the go. Can do the easy loops anyway. And I don't mean a DR 650 either

I thought this particular discusssion within the the thread was about what sort of bike was ideal for the unique conditions imposed by the challenges of getting to and riding on gravel in the Waikato. Guess I was wrong in my assumption.

One of the reasons I haven't bothered much with boards like this is in recent times is that life is too short to be hassled by people who don't have any thing better to do than crticise people who don't conform to their rules.

I might start a thread called Waikato ADV rides where you can discuss anything remotely connected to rding ADV Bikes in the Waikato- you will be welcome to join.

Jeez, I can't imagine why people on forums like this would hassle you:facepalm:
One of the biggest problem with this board is noise to signal ratio, and this is a thread that you can look in quickly to see who is riding locally, and where (it is after all called "Waikato ADV rides!", not "ADV Bikes for the Waikato"). So I simply made the suggestion that if you'd like to discuss you choice of bike you start another thread.

Ok fair enough. As you can see we are noobs. Now we know the threads scope and will stick to it... Maybe you should have mentioned the scope to start with if there was a problem.

Maybe there does need to be a 'Waikato Adventure rides chit chat thread'.

Didn't mean to cause a fuss.

This is part of the reason I asked about posting ride reports on here, seemed like it was ok from the responses and non, that I got.... And they don't fit the scope you're talking about.

Jeebus, it's not about fun police or regulators.
It's about a thread called "Waikato Adv rides!", where guys from Auckalnd, Wellington and Hamilton are crapping on about what sort of bike they want:facepalm:

Anyway - someone mentioned a local get together.
Who's up and where?

Also - I've been asked to run "An Introduction to AdvRiding" at the HMCC.

A guided ride on a club night plus maybe a discussion and/or bike display afterwards.
Any ideas?
Volunteers?

Basic common sense.

However, based on your inability to understand a simple thread title, you may have to get someone to explain that to you.

How's your PL insurance?

I don't know anything about the group you are dealing with but my involvement with N00bs on gravel has usually resulted in disapointment for someone, probably not the result you want (but makes for good photos).

If you're after something interactive and fun find a farm paddock and let them loose in there (possibly on a small trail bike) through a simple gymkhana course, provide a selection of short videos and beer.

Then arrange some short rides for those interested, you've got heaps of readily accessible stuff, gravel, beach, 42nd crossing etc

Fortunately, as far as insurance is concerned I'm in the biz.
Our initial thoughts are a guided ride from the Hamilton Motorcycle Club Rooms at 5.30 - 6 on a club night.
Say, out to Old Mountain Road and back through Lime Works Loop Road past Priongia.
Prolly 30% Gravel.

I get the bit about that this thread is for ADV Rides in the Waikato-that's why I am looking at bit after all, my point is really that the discussion was connected with ADV riding in the Waikato. Besides there's only a handfull of people that are active in this thread and who knows given that we probably travel the same roads we could well come across each other-as long as the discussion is vaguely on tiopic is it such ahuge issue?

which is exactly the kind of comment that turns people off being involved in threads like this and participating and contributing for the benefit of all.

Let me know when it's on and I can put an advert up for it on my various places. Could be interested in attending too if it's open to non members.
