This thread has been tried before with not much interest , but i thought it might be worth another try.
Weather looking good for this coming weekend, thinking of a ride up the coast to port waikato and back if anyone is interested :innocent:
Be good to get a few more bikes along other than the normal trio :scooter::scooter::scooter:

Not this weekend, but we should make an effort to get over Waikato way more often.
Or we could string together some Rotorua-ish roads some time, if you wanted to come and visit us :sunny:

Either Day would work for me and weather is looking good for both, i can work in with what suits the majority.
If we cant sort a ride for this weekend, there is a trail ride on sunday i will attend.

Always room for a JAFFA, we can probably even find a cafe for you in Port Waikato or Nikau Caves so you dont go through any withdrawal symptoms.
No problem with the 950 on dual sport tyres, all gravel roads apart from an optional play on the sand dunes at port waikato.

Yep Saturday is sounding like the best option, So saturday it is
Will have to come up with a plan to meet the northerners somewhere on the way.:blank:

May I suggest the Auckland crew meet at BP Autobahn (the one at Papakura on the motorway) at lets say 08h15 Saturday morning. (thats quater past eight for those non military types....hahahaha)
If any of the Auckland crew has a better meeting place and a more favorable time, please let us know, as I am open to change.
MARK- Can you let us know where and what time we can meet up with you Southern lads?

Nic, it would take about an hour and 40 minutes max from Rotorua to Whatawhata so you can decide if that is too early and you want to meet us at Nikau Caves Cafe.

If the southern crowd (of 2?) have a Nikau Palm Cafe ETA of 10:30 hrs, and the Jaffa contingent are to depart BP at 8:30 hrs, what will Jaffa do to amuse its collective self for the 2 hours before Nikau? (Sightseeing?) Low-tide follies at Port Waikato (low tide at 9:37 hrs)? Show-and-tell? Group counselling? (What else do we do in Auckland when we have an hour to kill....?) :shifty:

But if you aucklanders go via Klondyke road that would get you there about the right time, then you could turn around and ride it in the reverse direction with us 4 southerners. :shit:

If the south crew of 3 are planning on Port Waikato after the meet up, the obvious way south after that would be Klondyke Rd, Ponganui Rd(best road round those parts), so we (north lot) should find alternative route on our way to the meet up and that is easily accomplished!

I have finished washing my KLR650 after today's ride to Port Waikato via the Nikau Palm Cafe and Klondyke Road. I saw wild goats, wild pigs, wild turkeys, wild DR650s, you name it. I had my first experience on metal roads watching riders who seem to know what they are doing. I didn't fall off, but the grader had made some of the stretches pretty wibbly. (Where's a good rut to follow when you need one...)
I need more practise, but I really enjoyed my introduction to adventure riding. My rear K750 Dunlop is squaring off, and it only has 2,100 km on it. I wonder what I should get next? I need something that can last 5,000 km or more.
Many of the other riders took photos (and some video) so there should be some visual records of our sorty into the wild posted here soon. I hope Nic will show us the video she took.
We need more KLRs on these rides.

Am considering South Head (Murawia beach Auckland) ride starting from the end of the Murawai Gulf course road
Tide is full low at 8,26 am Sat morn so would want to be on beach at about 8am, its about 55ks up to the end so about 3/4 hr run up there by the time you stop to clean goggles and visors a few times
PS, can do one in the future when tide is a bit later for you South Bombayers

I'm a bit of a Murawai addict and could do two weeks in a row easy, May take 4WD this sat if no takers as can have heater on and windscreen wipers for sea spray ETC, (and can also nearly do beach at full tide on way home though it takes longer and lots of fuel)

Let's say I ride up the beach from Muriwai at low tide, and get (50 km or so?), are there any tracks from the beach back up to the road? I'm thinking of having a poke around there one day of the week when I don't have any work on.
Alternatively, if I ride up to South Head, is there a road to the beach so I can ride down to Muriwai on the sand?

There are 3 main exit/entrances to Muriwai, at the beginning from the Golf course entrance (Coast rd) , about 25ks further up, Rimmers road (has a a 60kph speed limit each side of the track) and about 15k after that Wilsons Rd (not marked but usually clear as debri and vehicle tracks leading up a reasonable incline at the entrance)
<a href="http://s603.photobucket.com/albums/tt119/800rider/?action=view&current=IMGP1274.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt119/800rider/IMGP1274.jpg" border="0" alt="50kms of sand and sea"></a>
I wouldnt advise that you try Wilsons Rd on your own particurally with your tires and even Rimmers would be touch and go to get out off (both of these tracks are easier to get on to the beach from than off as are steaper on the way out)
<a href="http://s603.photobucket.com/albums/tt119/800rider/?action=view&current=IMG_0075.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt119/800rider/IMG_0075.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
My mobile is on my profile so you can always give me a ring and check if I am free as would not advise you go it alone unless just going up beach from Golf course and returning the same way (unless you had more agressive tires)

Took the wife (new to motorcycling) up the Whatawhata side of Old Mountain road yesterday (Friday Morning), she didn't like the idea of the gravel after I told her that one day we would fall off together, probably on gravel or dirt... convinced her to try some anyway, she enjoyed it. Its a good view of Hamilton from the top on a nice day. Had to show her the purpose of riding the bumpy gravel & dirt tracks is to see stuff & places you wouldn't normally get the chance to. :scooter:

Too easterly and light for hang gliding this Saturday, so I am thinking about approaching Muriwai vai Rimmers Road and riding down the beach. Low tide at Muriwai is 9:19 a.m., which means an early morning departure from Auckland (8:00-ish?), but the chance of a cafe break at Muriwai and home for lunch. (Lunch at home will pay for the gas).
I've never been in the sand before, so this could be a hoot.
We could meet at the T-intersection of Rimmers Road and Selwyn Road at 8:30 on Saturday, unless anyone knows a better place to meet.
Feel free to jump in with suggestions....

Oops just realized another ride group are meeting at Kumeu BP at 8:30 and they usually get there early, (cant do that ride myself as they wouldn't be back till 5 ish) so suggest we re-locate to Muriwai Gas station at 8:15 (on the right on cnr of Muriwai rd and highway 16) also low tide is at 8:20 so that would put us closer to beach by a bit
PS, run down beach from Rimmers will take about 20min as is only about 14km (measured other day) we would have time to head up beach to South Head and back down if you wish (80kms) and still be at Murawai cafe by about 10:30 even if we muck around a bit (could grab coffee at gas station to keep you going till then)
What ya all think ?

Great fun today! Lovely day and we motored through Rimmers Road no trouble. A friend brought his 4x4 and they became the film and support crew
We had a nice fast run up the beach but were denied access right to the top by the Army! They were doing an exercise or perhaps they'd seen us hooning towards them? They obliged with a photo anyway and then it was back to the Wilsons Road area to see if we'd get up some of the dunes. Lets just say...there was mixed results :msn-wink:

Great photos!
I had a great time (first time in sand on the KLR). There's 5 kg of sand in front of my garage where I washed my dirty bike! I'd like to thank Dino for encouraging (cajoling?) me into attempting to get up the entrance to Wilson's road. It was a big step to try something that you are convinced will end in failure. Although I didn't make much progress, I think I will try something like this again the future, and I might do better. I had never ridden on well-packed sand before. It wasn't so bad at 100 km/h. Sure, the front end wiggles when you cross over the tracks of other vehicles, but you soon get used to it.
Shewolf took some great video footage. (I am going to have to get a helmet camera at some stage. I've added afew lo-rez pics that I took.) After the surf and the sand, the coffee at the Muriwai cafe tasted all the better!

Maybe I am confusing Dino with 10bikekid?
I have a confession: I and 5 other long-time sports bike riders have all be bitten by the Adventure Touring bug and have gotten adventure touring bikes. We'll spend a couple of weeks camping in the South Island next March. I want to build up my unsealed/sand/off road riding skills to the point where I won't make a complete ass of myself on the tour. So far so good. I now feel a lot more confident in sand. Although I am a novice, I am enjoying adventure touring a lot more than I thought I would.
I think I will give Wilson's Road another try, provided there is a tow rope and a good sense of humour all round. It really wasn't that bad, although my technique sucks and the KLR is a porker. BTW, where are all the other KLRs?

Yeah, true. I got to drive around in a hot skirted XR8 last summer. Must admit, it wasn't an unpleasant experience but I can only imagine how much better one of these track ones is (with a manual gearbox!). I wouldn't want one as low in the long term though, I like my ground clearance!

It a preregister ride but you can pay on day, not sure if you would want to come all way up to bombays in morning, but we will be at Nikau caves at about 11,30, afternoon section looks like a corker though (am hooking up with another KTMADV for trip down and hope a new Pirelli scorpion MT90 will be up to the task on the offroad bits (DR unlikely to be ready in time and would want to do some shorter run first to be sure)

I wouldnt have given it a go if it was more wet unless I was on a smaller bike with decent rubber :)
Great day out Dino.

Planning on a strop around the block Sunday if anyone wants to join in. Kick off 10am my place then taking in our usual gravel & twisty backroad route around the back of Rotoma, Rotoehu & Rotoiti with some gnarlyish 4x4 tracks in the middle then a late lunch at the Okere Falls Store. The track shouldn't be too slippery at present so hell knobs aren't required but something a bit more grippy than a road tyre would be recommended. If you want to come on a 200kg+ bike please bring Chris Birch style riding skillz or a heavy lift helicopter.
PM me if you need more details.

Nah man, they'd be 120s, I need a 140 or 150! Did you see that old Dunlop rally raid I've got in the garage. I thought about throwing that on in the morning but for a not quite so full on ride in the weekend.

Going for a fang around the bush block at Reporoa on Sunday. 16km 4x4 track loop. Kick off at the hut about 10am. As with our last ride, don't come on a 200kg+ bike unless you have god-like riding skills or a chase helicopter. It should be relatively dry though so any moderately knobby rubber will be ok. PM me for details.
Cheers

No worries mate. It got cold and windy. You wouldn't have liked it anyway.
I did a loop down by Whakamaru, piopio etc. I put the half worn Dunlop on. It felt better than that mostly worn heidenau!
