Cadence braking is something we were taught before our trucks had ABS. Yes it worked, but it required training and practice to get it right. Mind you, using ABS properly also requires training and practice.
So the end result is still the same, drive/ride like a squid and you'll still crash like one :nya:

I had to go onto good old wikipedia to look up "cadence braking". It is described there as:
"Cadence braking is supposed to maximise the time for the driver to steer around the obstacle ahead, as it allows him to steer while slowing. It needs to be learned and practiced. For most drivers of modern cars, it has been entirely superseded by ABS, however it is still a valuable skill for drivers of non-ABS equipped vehicles such as classic cars or economy cars.
Maximum braking force is obtained when there is approximately 10%-20% slippage between the braked wheel's rotational speed and the road surface.[1] Beyond this point, rolling grip diminishes rapidly and sliding friction provides a greater proportion of the force that slows the vehicle. Due to local heating and melting of the tyres, the sliding friction can be very low. When braking at, or beyond, the peak braking force the steering is ineffective since the grip of the tyre is entirely consumed in braking the vehicle.
Cadence braking involves pumping the brake pedal fairly rapidly but deliberately, to make the wheels lock and unlock. It can be approximated by the following steps:" (as you can see I haven't copy/pasted the whole thing).
I love the reference to "economy cars". I vaguely remember Dad teaching me how to do that back in the day, in the Mark II Cortina. Never needed to do it though in all the years i've been driving. Nowadays I don't have an "economy car" lol.

It is said that a wise man learns from the mistakes of others.
This link takes you to a compilation of videos of motorbike accidents. They were filmed by Go Pro cameras on bikes and dash cams in cars. Most of the errors in judgement seems to come from riders themselves- this video should be required viewing before you get a motorcycle license. One thing to take from all this might be: the car always wins. Every. Time. Ignore the stupidity of the first thirty seconds or so because what follows is well over an hour of various crashes from around the world coming at about one every ten seconds. Feel like getting your learn on? Watch this:

Not entirely true.
Try pulling up a Landcruiser with a load of face shovel teeth in the tray, and towing a lincoln 400AS mobile welder, while you desend off the messa, and a shift boss in his wagon pulls out in front of you.:shit::pinch:

Saw doozy today.
Bike 'A' overtakes a milk tanker (probably empty going by its rate of progress) and crosses double yellow line, "Hmm, OK" I think, moderate visibility.
Bike 'B' follows bike 'A' down a dip and up the other side.
Only now apart from being on the wrong side of the yellow lines he is passing the truck cab 40 or less metres from a blind crest, it's a well-laden bagger heading home from a rally - probably hung-over but certainly tired).
I would not like to think of the outcome should any other vehicle been coming the other way - at least I would have got a really good view of the resulting carnage - like I really need more of THAT!.
And the bikes stopped just before the next town some 18kn away, appeared they were waiting for a mate...

I used to once upon a time, never at the side of the road (I got sick of the WTF attitude - plus I don't need the hassle at a rally).
Now it's over the phone, that way they have no idea who 'dobbed them in'.
I'm sick of seeing such dumb shit (maybe they thought "Ye-ha , showed that fuckin' slow Harley rider eh!").
Normally dealt with by sending them a ticket, one with the maximum demerits I can muster up. Wankers.
Funny how their story differs so much from fact when they think 'somebody else' dobbed them in.
Funny how their story crumbles when I tell them the person that made the complaint was me, not some random member of the public with a cell-phone.

Just occassionally, when I see shit happen on the road I sometimes think "Fuck - I wish I could stop them and give them a ticket ... "
But then I'd have to put up with al the other shit you popos do ...
But hey - I appreciate the sentiment ..
