To All you bucket racers out there, How much HP do you think your bike has at the wheel? I am pretty happy with my scooter and just wanted to compare it to your buckets.

YES! Just found a barrel- now I will have some HP, but not very many.

I do know of one bucket down this way that started out with 7 and ended up with 14 or so

A friend of mine has a 50cc bike hes bolting on a scooter kit to it as its all measures up and he will have a 22hp bucket racer. with a total cost of less than a grand.

texmo

have a gl145 in 400 impulse frame. atc200 barrels and piston with 8mm chewed off the bottom and xr125 stroke. original 145 head, thus creating 14:1 compression. took so much aloy outa the ports, i thought they were goin to colapse. Have gotten it up to 170kph in 1.5kms. will have to put the old girl on a dyno to see hp. out acelerates my best m8s fzr750 and in the impulse frame can do pretty impressive stoppies. Any other bucket owners think they can beat that?

That's a single barrel from a 250 twin, sleeved down to 100cc, custom power valves, etc etc, in a RS125 frame. It produced 27.5hp at the rear wheel on Brett Robert's dyno, with a very nice power curve.

My current bucket makes 22.5hp at the rear wheel, well it did when I built it. I can give average RG150s a good run at Taupo or Puke and have kept slow ZXR400s honest at Manfeild on the full circuit.

Any good 2-stroke would beat it, buuuuut, if it couldn't it doesn't really matter. You just follow along behind waiting for some 4-stroke bit to break and then tootle past. Done it heaps of times.

Was Mt Wgtn, but a certain lack of enthusiasm and a nagging wrist after a big crash means I haven't really been into it for a bit. Moving to Wellington at the end of this month, bought a shop at Wainuiomata. Will definitely be trying to make the racing at Kaitoke but gonna be pretty busy I think. Dropped a bunch of stuff at John Connor's place last night, Gazza's bike is coming together nicely - 6-speed MB100 with RS running gear.

Good luck with your new venture and enjoy Wellington. Show Kaitoke how its done eh?

If he’s bolting a hot up kit onto his bike then it will of course be illegal as a bucket racer.

Last time Speedpro showed Kaitoke ‘how its done’ he emerged very muddy indeed.
By the way the new surface has fixed that area.

LOL- After the recent run (or is that breakdown) of bad luck that Dangerous has had with his CB125T, I've suggested to him that if he's going to spend so much time parked on the side of the track, the least he could do is take some marshals flags with him

If he’s bolting a hot up kit onto his bike then it will of course be illegal as a bucket racer. When I was looking for a barrel for my GP125 I spied a 76 KX125 barrel. On quick inspection it looked like it would fit with only minor mods required- even the bore was right. Port timing looked about right- just with MUCH better flow... I don't believe in cheating, but I was tempted...

My friend just scored a rotax barrel his is going to modify so it will fit on to his scooter, Yay 30hp 150cc scooter, power valve so massive power band, water cooling and great reliabilty..

Getting a bit off topic here, but wouldn't it be easier to just buy an KR/RG150 or an RGV250 or something and have more power, better handling, beter brakes etc etc? Or is the whole point that it's 'gotta be a scoota'?

texmo
10th August 2005, 11:34
Its more that fact that its gotta be a scooter, I like the look I think nothing looks as good as a SS90 or a SX200, I do hate jappa scooters though, But making something that puts out about 2hp standard, do the ton or pull power wheelies is also part of it.
Im not so much into automatic scooters I would rather own a motorbike, But give me scooter such as a vespa ss90, gs150, ss180, rally200 or a Lammbretta like a sx200, tv200, li150, vega, gp200, A/b/c/d model or even a LD, Hey I will even be happy with a NZETA, mobil, hinkel or a puch. Old scooter cack is where its at.....

You won't get bikes from our shop, more like a loaf of bread and a kilo of cheese.

I've probably been told this before, do the scooter guys race at Kaitoke? Quite interesting checking out some of the gear they have. Obviously a good sized industry supplying stuff for scooters.

I can see where you're coming from now. Kinda like what we do with buckets- take some mild mannered commuter bike and make a racer of it. Of course, we can't buy off the shelf kits to make em go, but other than that it's pretty similar. I've seen some pics of guys racing them somewhere in NZ. Do you do that?

Matt & Jess got a couple of guys to come along a few years back & they had a great time but never showed again. The other issue that has raised it's head is all bikes need to have nylon on any part that may touch down, not damaging the track is a provision of our use. On a scooter this would mean quite a bit of work.

texmo
10th August 2005, 13:08
It wouldnt happen scooters have too many parts that can touch down. Mud gaurd, side pods, runner boards, leg shields. What about gear selector and chamber?

its now 148. 4cc above standard only. My step father did a lot of it. 30 years as a bike mechanic, specialising in getting most power as possible outa small honda singles for farmers and motorcross. Fairley well qualified for hotting a Gl145 i thought. With the right contacts parts total was $80.

‘cause they’re notorious over-chargers.

Yes, but they are exceptionally good at polishing the small nooks and crannys of ports, and climbing into the crank case to inspect the condition of bearings etc. Also excellent at decoking pipes with the Binford 3000 Budgie-hammer, a small compressed air jack hammer. Worth every cent they are

texmo

Well $600 for my bike, And the rest added up pretty quickly. Its going to be road legal though.

I had to use a Nifty 50 when my 750 was in getting serviced once. Riding around Rocks Road in Nelson with logging trucks etc passing me 1m away while the thing bucked and twitched was NOT my idea of fun! I felt (and I believe WAS) much safer riding my Ninja at Warp Factor Two on the open road than I was rinding that thing in traffic! Scary stuff!

If I was gonna start bucket racing I would just buy some ones old bike to learn on, when it brakes fix it, until you have a fair idea about how it works and move on from there.

If I was gonna start bucket racing I would just buy some ones old bike to learn on, when it brakes fix it, . . .

Possibly when it brakes, - :ride: drop down two gears & pitch it into the corner while gently releasing the brake & applying a touch of throttle.

And hope that it doesn’t break. :hitcher:
