Scary as all hell it was!

Why was that?

Hawkeye
3rd April 2013, 20:58
I second what DDM just said. It's just that, I will have Theatre Group coming up so will try but will not always be up for it. I would have loved to come out yesterday but was attempting my first trip over the Rimutakas. Scary as all hell it was!

Takas is only as scary as you make it. Ride it at a speed your comfortable with and and it's just another road. It can still be fun at a nice steady pace.

Why was that?

I sometimes get very bad headaches after riding or driving for long distances. I had a bad headache the whole way over and I didn't feel comfortable riding all that fast, and I held up traffic behind me (although I did pull over and let them pass).

True hawkeye, but as we know being human is that new experiences can sometimes be scary especially if ones confidence level might be a bit low

<snip>... and I didn't feel comfortable riding all that fast, and I held up traffic behind me (although I did pull over and let them pass).

I found the same the first time I did the 'takas, some of those cars really know that road  Think I was on a GN at the time too, but can't blame the bike it was my lack of experience on windy hills on a bike. At least it is centre lined all the way, now the akas ....
However Hawkeye is correct, take your time, ride at your pace and I will add don't be ashamed to let the cars go first. I even had to let cars go on my first time over the Paekok but it was night, bucketing down at the time and the visor was fogging
The 'takas have a rep and as the Dr said it is only human to be apprehensive the first time.
Hope to see you on one of k1w33d's proposed rides if its not too :cold:

Only through postings on KB. When I lived in Wellington and had to commute to Martinborough it was just a twisty road that was fun on a bike. The fact that it now has magical powers is all down to the interweb. It is just a road.

Pretty sure it had a rep before the interwebs - like when Sir Robert managed to get a corner named after him and not because he was the Prime Minister

Hey all , Just come back from a long lay-off from motorbikes (Used to ride with the Manawatu crowd regularly a few years ago) , Picked myself up a Curvaceous Yellow 2002 SV650S to get back into things.Holy heck these things are fun to ride. Not too familiar with many of the local roads around here though i've been over the Takas a few times .Everyone I know seems to be complaining about the cold and not riding lately so ive been doing daily solo rides :(

Would it be ok to start coming along to these social rides ? What's all the details ? (I'm in Hataitai/Evans Bay area)

Hey HornetBoy,

I am looking at doing a few short slow rides over the darker months as the BRONZ rides are officially over. They will be slow paced rides for people who are uncomfortable or just not interested in trying to keep up with some of the faster paced rides. Haven't really thought about any routes yet but they will likely be starting at Lower Hutt or Kaiwharawhara and be around 30-40 minutes. The BRONZ rides usually have a good mix of experienced and not-so-experienced riders and newer riders can get feedback on their riding practises. The winter rides will not be so "formal" but hopefully we will be able to share our experiences with each other and enjoy some of the social aspects of group rides. But it all depends on who shows up on the night I suppose. I try to get out as often as I can and will be sitting my restricted license soon so the more practise I can get the better. I will not be doing anything this Tuesday coming (long weekend sent me broke) but will probably try to get out on Wednesday and or Thursday and or every other day until I am broke again. Others might be keen to do something on Tuesday though so keep an eye on this thread and tag along if you are interested.

Chur,

Chris Adam

Glad to hear it, be good to link up with a few local riders ,I've lived here for four years but only recently got back on the horse after a fairly big crash a few years back on an organised ride in Manawatu.
Very good/hard way to learn how not to ride a motorcycle :spanking:

Ill keep regular on this thread so i can make sure to be able to make these rides,Wednesdays and Thursdays will work for me .

Yeah Im sure I see you around now and then ;)

The 12hour days are killing me plus its getting cold in the mornings (yes im soft) where I am moving to is 4.1-4.2km from work so am going to start running again and bike will be used on Tuesdays for rides (if organized :p) and the weekends

If its raining I am undecided haha, trying to avoid buying another car or a larger bike (my track car needs some money spent however as I haven't driven it since 2009 :s )

I ride all year round, but work shifts, so my days off are frequently not weekends.... but I'm usually off on a ride somewhere on them... But I do tend to ride a bit of 'distance' on my day off jaunts,,,, 3-400k's is not unusual. So always happy to pick up a riding buddy.

Got money for fuel so I will be doing a ride on Tuesday if anyone is interested. Will be a short run from Avalon duckpond, up and across the Western Hills and then through Maungaraki finishing at McDonalds in Petone. Will do a reccy run tomorrow (Monday) after work to see what the road/environment conditions are like. Likely to be meeting up at 6pm then aiming to get underway at 6:15pm. It will be a slow ride. The route has some narrow twisty corners so care will need to be taken.

They are just rides Sketch. Just a bit slower paced than the average Wellington Riders rides. During daylight savings we have some senior riders from BRONZ that come along to help out the newer riders but the ones that are happening during the darker months are just rides for people who enjoy riding.

During daylight saving time I co-ordinate a slowpaced ride aimed at new and returning riders. Read the first post and that will giv eyou an idea of what im trying to achieve.
Now that daylight saving has finished for the season, the thread is a place for riders who went on the rides to meet up and arrange whatever they want to really. The official BRONZ slow rides wont start again til next summer now.
Feel free to hop onto any of the rides going , Kiw33d is keen to keep riding...er...me not so much after tonights coldness. He is also tagger and adv bike rider if you are keen.

Meet at Avalon Duckpond, ready to leave at 5:30pm. We'll do Whitemans from Silverstream end through to Trentham as traffic is a bitch at that time. I'll show you guys a secret spot too :shifty:

hopefully you won't get the fog tonight, nasty in the dark on those blind corners. Not to mention natives thinking they own the road

Hi all,

This is my first post here in years! But I'm interested in coming along to tonights or future rides. I recently bought my first bike, which is a 2007 Kawasaki GPX250, after a lot of looking around.

I would be keen for a Porirua run though

Hi James. You are welcome to come along tonight. During non daylight savings the rides are just organised by anyone who wants to do slow paced rides. Be ready to leave at 5:30 tonight from the Duckpond

Not sent from an iPhone.
