Starting Tuesday 2nd October. can't wait!

Supported by BRONZ Wellington Branch and co-ordinated by one of the local committee members, the aims of these rides are as follows:
1. To offer safe on-road time to inexperienced riders.
2. Hazard recognition.
3. Learn how to ride responsibly in a group

During daylight saving hours we gather at 6p.m and depart at 6.30 p.m. The starting location varies depending on the intended route that evening. The routes are largely urban because of time constraints.
Although there are, as yet. no accredited mentors accompanying this ride, all rides have a Lead Rider (LR), senior riders and a tail-end-charlie ( TEC ). These are experienced riders and will look out for learners, assisting should anything go wrong.
Over the 3 years this has been running, we have had a wonderful representative sample of the variety of people attracted to motorcycling. A roll call of riders would show a 15yo lad accompanied by his Grandfather, women aged from 20’s to 40’s, young men and returning riders. Ability of the riders has varied from very nervous first-timers to those who are nearly ready to attempt the Restricted or Full license. This ride would not be able to go ahead without input from experienced riders and these marvellous folk are equally as varied in gender, age and the type of bike they choose to ride.
We have had Andrew Templeton, from Road Safe, come out with us to see what we are about. He gave us the Thumbs Up as being a safe, sensible, organised ride that he is happy to refer his students to.
Any rider ( including returning riders) is welcome to attend the gatherings and enjoy the company.
Although this is supported and sanctioned by BRONZ Wellington, everyone rides at their own risk

The Hutt runs all start from the Avalon Park Duckpond carpark.
Two runs start from the site next to the Kaiwharawhara self service pumps. This is so we don't block truck and trailer access to the pumps.
The Porirua route starts in the carpark at the big gates along from the Police college.

ALL information about these rides is available at www.bronzwellington.org.nz. Click on the link at the bottom of the page and it will take you to our new forum page where you can ask questions.

yay, first ride went well. Thanks to Jimmy and Paul for taking time out from their schedules to be the senior riders. Although we are not certified mentors, we do our best to keep the learners on the right path and get them home safely.
to the three learners who came along, I hope you enjoyed meeting some other riders. I look forward to seeing you next week.

Starting from the Avalon Park Duckpond, we will be doing the Upper Hutt route.

Then you'll know you're in Wellington ;-)

If it's a howling gale then the ride is off, but if it's pretty average for Welly, then ride on. It's Wellington, we get some nasty weather here and riders have to be able to cope with what gets thrown at them.

Nice to see riders on tuesday. Always happy to answer questions, and pleased to hear some good q & A coming out.

Next weeks ride is doing the Porirua route. Meeting at the Gates into Aotea lagoon park, just up from the Police College

No worries . BE is going to sort it at the gates this week as my work hours wont allow me to get there in time. I'll be waiting at Pauatahanui shop ready to tag onto the end. You could do the same if you like

Nice to see new faces, welcome along Grey Wolf. Cracker evening out and great to spend some time socialising at the other end..once we'd found parking that is. MIght have to rethink the end point for this route. Any suggestions?

glad that no-one got stuck on their bike, but after my embarrassing fall over in the car park, I had trouble getting back on Henry. Not to worry, home safe and had help to park the Ol'Fella.

Really pleased at the quality of the senior riders, well done chaps.

Look forward to seeing you again next week. remember learners, these rides are for YOU. We will ride at your pace and answer your questions, no such thing as a silly question here.

Thanks to the Senior riders again for taking out these new riders. Wish I could have got there, but work committments simply didnt allow it this week. Sounds like a good turnout, was a bit of a challenge for a brand new rider that's for sure.
We have a short Mystery Tour by Jimmy from TSS next week. Goodness only knows where that will be! All Slow riders welcome, regardless of experience. BE and I are away at the BRONZ rally this weekend so no sunday slowride, but hoping the agreeable weather will continue and maybe the sunday after that?

Cheers

Ratti, you need to tidy up the Bronze links. The list shows 'short Hutt' but there isn't any link to where that ride goes. What's the difference between 'Lower Hutt' and 'Short Hutt'

"Short Hutt" is meet at the Avalon Duck Pond, then the actual route is "Follow White trash". It used to be to the end of the Eastbourne road but we want to get back to the P&J for the BRONZ meeting a little earlier.

Come along tomorrow and see where this weeks ride goes :D

Probably need a note about the start and finish point in the bronze page. It's not clear to those not in the know about those weeks

Ratti

As requested by Hawkeye... and for anyone else who hasn't been able to follow the plot :msn-wink:

The Short Hutt Route starts at the Avalon Duckpond ( same as all the Hutt Rides ) and finishes at the BRONZ Wellington Meeting. This is a brief Mystery Tour lead by Jimmy (aka White Trash ) . You will have seen this character chatting to people on the sales floor at TSS.

The actual route will vary from week to week. It's basically a FollowTheLeader deal.

I have added a note on the Forum page at www.bronzwellington.org.nz

Any questions?

Next week will be starting next to the truckstop servo at Kaiwharawhara where we will head up Brooklyn Rd and out to the coast. Senior riders please read the instructions and rider route directions....THIS ROUTE HAS CHANGED FROM LAST YEAR

Thanks to the senior riders who are coming long on these rides. It's not as easy as you might think. A different set of skills are required and it's not everyone who can handle it. I'm really enjoying the rides this year, getting a great bunch of people along. A good mix of senior and new riders. A range of skill sets and experience and a nice social atmosphere to introduce the new riders to the family of Motorcycling.

Ride schedule at www.bronzwellington.org.nz

Hey guys/gals. Finally got my licence last weekend. Spent most of my teen years riding various types of bikes but never got around to getting my licence. Kind of hard when you can't get your hands on a road legal bike. So anyway, I'm 36 now and have bought myself a 2004 BMW F650 GS and keen on learning a few skills from some experienced riders as well as meeting some new people. Will be joining BRONZ once my bank account recovers a bit.

Join the rides and think about the membership when and if you are ready. Chances are by joining the rides you will also get a chance to meet some of the BRONZ membership and find out a bit about it, but the main thing is you get a chance to get some good advice and some good riding practice.

Agreed, have any of the newer riders been BRONZ members? I doubt it, as even some of the senior riders aren't.

Awesome ride tonight. So glad that I went along. Riding is fun but when your doing it with others who share the passion it is even better. Thanks to the "Senior Riders" who take us out and help out the new riders with safety tips, good riding techniques and group riding etiquette. I will definitely be coming to a few more of these.

Ratti
21st November 2012, 16:56
thanks. Always a pleasure to meet someone new.

I'm breaking in a few new lead Riders this year, it's a really hard job and takes a while to get the hang of it. We'll get it sussed tho. The Senior Riders who ride out with the group have been around for a while and know a thing or two. I'd like to think they get as much out of it as the novices.

Hopefully the weather will play ball and we will be able to get some slowpace miles on the open road sometime soon.

Reminder that there is a forum at www.bronzwellington.org.nz where we can plot our takeover of the roads of NZ. You don't have to be a member of BRONZ to join the conversation, but you will need to sign in.

cheers

hey Ratti, it is good to be back riding again. had surgery and was in a cast for 6 weeks then a splint for a further 4 weeks unfortunatly came right a little to late for the last ride of 2012.

To top that off I had to go to Alexander with my wife for Christmas therefore haven't had a lot of riding over the past few months, but plan to be there for the first ride of 2013 with my new bike.

Really hope I'm in the right place even tho I came early I went up to the police college and turned round seeing as I was 100% sure if this was the right place or not and had my front brake lever snap on kw as I pulled over :s just drove about 100m with just the rear brake and engine braking but it wasn't overly fun hopefully someone can suggest a better temp option otherwise ill have to ride it home like this :s

made it home ok cheers to everyone at the ride the advice was really useful and the offers of following me back really are appreciated :) also cheers to the guy on the ducati for rushing home to see if his spare brake lever would fit

I'd like to think we are friendly bunch. As always, new faces are welcome. Great to see some familiar ones too.
Ride went with no hitches. I try to choose routes that challenge learners without being so hard you get discouraged. Senior riders generally like them too and are happy to give up a bit of time to pootle about with new riders. Good to give something back to a pastime that has given so many years of pleasure.

Look forward to next week. This Sunday BRONZ has a Helluvit Ride. Suitable for slowpaced riders. There will be some senior riders happy to hang out with you on the road. Make yourself known to the co-ordinator and he will sort you out. Details on www.bronzwellington.org.nz

Good ride last night was very different riding at that speed in a group, have picked up a few bad habits that I had pointed out so do really appreciate the comments :)

Can't work out if I had been doing it already but from the comments and advice given on leaning into the corners I have been trying to make sure I am doing it right.

Rode home via the haywoods/plimmerton (was to dark for paekok hill) definatly getting quicker via the corners (keeping to the speed limit)

Will see you guys next week :)

Awesome night out. I continue to be impressed with the calibre of the senior riders. We started the season with all new senior riders, and now that they have been slapped into shape, they are doing well.

Newer riders are fitting together well. There is an art to riding in a group and keeping an eye open for each others safety. it's not easy to learn and takes some application...and maybe a donut or three at half time...many thanks to the nice girls at Donut King in the Mall where I work.

Yeah, It was too nice a night to just do a short run over Airlee Rd so the decision was to run up to the top of the hill and back down and then follow the normal route.
Unfortunaely, due to a delayed stop at the top to sort a chain out, we ended up missing the run over Airlee and just did Grey's Rd to Macca's Mana.

Great photos from the top show what a great place it would have been to be on the evening. Pity about the Airlee Rd bit as it includes the village ride but as for the windy road the hill is a good challenge for a fine evening and without the weekend spandex brigade to upset the flow. Good choice. :niceone: Like I said I wish I was there.
Having fixed leaving points and time but flexible route allows for variety and changes to suit conditions so I was complimenting the change.

hahahahahaha Ironmaiden, thats a blast from the last, I dont remember most of those concerts but thats another story.

anyway, I am just wondering and thinking out loud.

Maybe we should have more than one stop to regroup, especially for larger groups like we had last night.

so instead of just stopping half way to have a break and regroup, we could have a "rolling stop" some where, where we just all pull over and get regrouped, also what about a radio for the leader and tail end charlie to be able to talk. so if we pulled over for a regroup the leader could contact tail end charlie and make sure everyone was together because I am sure it would be difficult for the leader to see all the way to the back, I know I would find it that way.

Not bad ideas at all, though if we all work to the "I can't see the rider behind me, I will pull over and wait for them" methodology then the group doesn't get split up, and no one gets left behind. I'm all for comms etc as anyone who knows me will attest, but generally the simplest method is the best.

DrDarkMatter
6th March 2013, 10:08
yip I agree, KISS is best for sure. My concern was that we would all get strung along a long line and pull over at different places and end up all over the place. so if I had pulled over (as I should have) then oneofsix who was in front me might have been watching something in front of him was watching the road and so at some point looked behind and was I was not there and pulled over and so on and so on we potentially would get very strung out over a long stretch of road by the time it reached the leader. then we would all have to turn around and go back to find the stragglers and then turn around again to get back all going the same direction we were traveling in the first place. ya know what I mean?

I am not trying to be difficult or cause problems, I just see some.........issues with the pull over and wait rule, that being we could get strung out over a long stretch and have to potential turn around multiple times on a possibly busy road

I mean I am a new guy here so what do I know, just sayin lol

my 2c.
Not being a route I ride, never done the whole thing before especially from the start, OK once on the hill, I was as concerned with retaining sight of where we were going as anything else. Traffic was quite heavy on the Lower Hutt side. I swear when I checked there was another rider between DDM and me as well as a lot of cars. Plenty of cars between me and the Boulie I was following. Next I check and DDM is the rider to my rear and the other bike is behind him, don't know if the other bike was part of the group or not as there were no defined positions except lead and TEC, we all just left as we felt fit and as I was leaving another rider arrived at the venue. Also having to watch for traffic and hazards meant it could be a while before you notice that you can't see the bike behind and then there was the question of was it just traffic between, there were a few times it was just traffic blocking the view and as a senior rider I had more time to look (read study) at the mirrors than an L plater would.

In hind sight I wish I had held up a hand and called a stop once I lost sight of the bike behind DDM but we were on the hill by then and we do have a TEC.

I also saw an issue last night with pulling off in traffic only to have to attempt to rejoin immediately because traffic had temporarily block the view.

For the main group that had managed to get away as a bunch the rear view method would have worked but for those of us that had to filter into the flow the view of the bike ahead and behind was often obstructed until the traffic thinned out and stopping in the early stages would have caused issues in itself, especially for L-platers.

A group pause has worked in the past.

I also see the logic of the rear view thing.

Both together avoids the new rider doubt, the string out etc. Deliberate spreading of seniors who know the routine and with defined hand signals, (fast up = pack stop) through the pack is another possibly for incremental improvement. Balance against going over the top, a hard thing to do.

Like I said, just my 2c worth, as I saw it at the time.

DrDarkMatter

my 2c.

In hind sight I wish I had held up a hand and called a stop once I lost sight of the bike behind DDM but we were on the hill by then and we do have a TEC.

Same, cool reply though...

I was thinking along those lines as well.

Even though we slowed down on the way out last night I backed off the guys more at the front

I was about 3-4 secs behind Nick (Drdarkmatter) I could see him he could see me we then had about a 2-3 second gap between me and the little GN

I was pretty paranoid about keeping the GN within reasonable distance behind me I was still easily able to keep up with the boys in front if I needed to.

Oneofsix you jumping behind the GN seemed a good idea meant it wasn't left to the tec to keep an eye on her.

On the makara run I was 3rd from the back and the two back guys got seperated for alittle from us due to traffic 2-3 carlengths back but because of the set places I wasnt overly worried because tbh sitting on my own at the back doesnt worry me and I knew the 2 behind me would be fine to catch up

Might pay to spend alittle more time and decide who rides where

ie

Group leader
L
R or F
L
F
L
F
Tec

Sort of setup general rule of thumb I thought was go at the slowest riders pace (however I know I get pretty fustrated being stuck behind some people)

So if we are having the slower rider at the back we need someone expirenced or confident for them to follow so they can learn lines better braking etc also means if they drop back the Expirenced rider will slow everyone else down

I could be wrong however this is just my rough take

We should be doing the speed limit or if the conditions arent 100% then 10-15km below that

Ive been finding the slower rides good because it gives me more awareness when riding with other riders in regards to them not riding the same as me.

Nick and myself are starting to realize how each other rides and how much we can push it with each other

Guess it takes time to learn other people in the group

you raise a good point, amongst others in there, Dragon. With the late arrival of the little GN, after most of the bikes had in fact left, it was stuck at the back, whereas I am quite confident the rider leader would have preferred it right behind the leader if he had of had the chance, so she set the pace.

Sorry about arriving late... Again. I get off work around sixish, so it's like, if I get there, I get there, if I miss out one week, then that's life. Kaiwharawhara is probably not going to be too much of a problem getting there on time, but the Police College and Avalon, I may get there around 6.20-6.30.

Didn't mean to make you feel guilty. It is a fact, it is what happened and an opportunity to adjust and perhaps improve the rides. A pause would also give a chance to re-arrange to accommodate, another idea as I type.

Back to general discussion.
Another point I am aware of as my pillion just got her L is the differing levels of abilities to be catered for even within the L riders. The day she sat another lady was waiting her turn and whereas me pillion only really rode for the first time on her BHS this other lady owned a HD, so not LAMS approved then, and had been riding for a while, Dragon himself - well he can speak for himself but lets just say not a raw beginner. Therefore some L-platers will be good riders and others will have only just worked out which end faces forward, all have to be safe and enjoy the experience, after all before long I want the lass that pillioned with me riding along with the group as this group is about gaining experience and ability.

Bad Biker

Seems to be a lot of discussion over a simple idea?

GTRMAN is correct it is SOOOOOO simple!

If you can’t see the bike in your mirror you find a safe place and pull over and stop!

two things will happen if everything is okay.

1) TEC will bring up the rear and we will re-group

2) LR will turn and ride back to pick up the group to check that there had been no accident.

It’s not rocket science all rider should be constantly checking mirrors regardless of experience or reason.

Obviously pulling over is not always a safe idea, like Makara, Wainui and the hill where there is no shoulder to stop on, so we wait for a safe place to stop.

The idea is to look after each other.

There are always going to be slower riders and learner hence the name “Slow Paced Ride”

Maybe spread the L, R & F riders through the group some more if able but it won't change the issue or rule.

Maybe I am slow but it appears to be a simple idea getting made complicated? :ride:

DrDarkMatter
6th March 2013, 16:48
It may very well be that simple but I am asking questions, I am asking to see if maybe there is a better way, there very well may not be but I am just askin..

GTRMAN
6th March 2013, 17:12
And there is nothing wrong with questions.

My take on the "keep the rider behind in sight" method is that it ensures everybody on the ride takes responsibility for keeping the group together. That to me is the whole essence of group riding

Ratti here. Signed in with BE's new widget. Brilliant discussion of a very common dilema in group rides. And one I rant about 5-6 times every season.
zit's really simple.....at a safe place, bloody well pull over and dnmmmmmwait for the riders behind you to catch up. Yes, it means a string of riders at times. Eventually everyone bunches up again & the group continues.
It's not hard and annoys me no end when it doesn't happen. How bloody hard is it to stop and wait ? Doesn't matter if a car or two gets between you and the rider behind you. If you know where the rider is, eventually the car will go away and there you are together again. Simple eh?
On a positive note, open discussion of problems and solutions is a fabulous thing to be seeing here. The mix of abilities is always a challenge for me and the senior riders to deal with. To be fair, I've been co-ordinating these rides for a few years now and used to the half dozen or so questions that come up every season. I've had to break in a completely new team of senior riders this season and have been forced to leave them largely to themselves to sort it out. Huge round of applause to how it's been going guys, tricky business this herding motorcyclists.

This is not cool, If you are concerned with a riders performance then talk to them or the ride organiser or the senior riders, any of those would be the constructive option. Bagging a learner on KB is just a fast track way to kill whatever confidence they had to start with.

Would you like your riding discussed openly? or would you prefer someone to talk quietly to you about it in the first instance.

Sorry you see it that way, it was not my intention

i cant beleive how hard being LR is....i have been riding for a very long time.I think that on the rides where splitting up is likely(like Wainui) a couple of pre agreed stopping places would be good. The lead rider can rarely see the whole line of riders. The tail end charlie should always wear a hi viz..be nice if no one else did or at least a different colour to tec

[QUOTE=BMWST?;1130511787]i cant beleive how hard being LR is....i have been riding for a very long time.

In the years I've been running these rides, NO-ONE knows how hard it is being LR. It takes a lot of practice to keep a group together, and is a totally different way of thinking about riding. Your mind is on the road condition, who is behind me, how far back is the tail, making sure you are being an exemplar of correct lines...and so the list goes on. It's not easy and there is not a single LR who has not been taken aside by me and asked to change what he is doing. Sometimes gently, sometimes accompanied by a Ratt-slap.

I'd like to remind riders that these rides are specifically aimed at LEARNERS AND THOSE WITH VERY LITTLE EXPERIENCE. If you're becoming frustrated with the pace and the controlled nature of the ride, perhaps you need to explore other rides? I know there is a Thursday and Wednesday night blat over the hill that is not controlled and at a much faster pace. I believe leaving the duckpond in Avalon park about 6 or 6.30. Perhaps that might be more comfortable for some of you.

In the meantime...I'm hoping to have Henry back on the road in time for next weeks ride. I look forward to catching up with the new faces I'm seeing on the thread here and seeing the improvement in the less experienced riders. And mostly, having a bit of slowpaced fun.

DrDarkMatter

ok this is just getting out of hand, I started this with a question about how things get handled if riders get separated, this was never about pace. Its about rider separation and having the riders strung out over a long stretch of road and then having to regroup and start over again from some given point.

it was me just asking a question about how things are handled and if there was a little better way.

geez.....

the seperation issue is covered on the briefing. Solution was also covered. From what I hear, it simply did not happen.

1. check your mirrors - constantly
2. no-one behind you? Pull over at a safe place and wait.
3. continue until you catch up with the person in front who should also have pulled over and be waiting.

easy eh?

Riders look after other riders. and this is one way we do it. Until you have a handle on the process and apply it, you're not a rider, you are just someone who uses a motorcycle to get from A to B
