I've seen these a380 on trademe for about $50. They don't have an output socket for an earphone, but has anyone tried them?

Only reviews I found.. seems to work but doesnt like rain (rain causes malfunction).

laser detector is good but when it rains so it affected by the rain because when I have it on the highway to signal in places I drive that it does not sound when it's dry weather malfunction September 29, 2012

I wouldn't waste $50 on a detector, there's a reason it's that cheap. However, I do have a Bel STI, one of the most expensive but best.

btw, laser detection is basically useless on any device, as it works so fast by the time it warns you, the signal is already returning to the cop's gun...

I'm still waiting to see a decent comparison between a selection of cheap radar detectors and expensive ones from brands such as Beltronics or Escort. There are some cheap ones here (http://dx.com/s/radar+detector.html?sort=-Price).

why would you not just get a good one instead of wanting the best of the cheap ones.??

they are cheap for a reason fella, save up ya pennies and get a good one, how many cheap nasty ones do you see on bikes.?? none, they are all the good trusted brands that guys put on their bikes.

Don't buy a cheap one.. just make a small pile of your hard earned dollars and set it on fire.

I use an STi, had a V1 and played with an Escort X50. The X50 is reasonably cheap and would be effective.

I already have a Beltronics detector, but I don't see the point in paying 10X as much if the product is only 20% better. I don't see many bikes with radar detectors since it's a bit difficult and dangerous to try and look for a radar detector when the bike is moving or when I'm driving, and when bikes are parked up somewhere the owners are usually sensible enough to remove it.

That doesn't prove that those radar detectors are better than cheap Chinese ones. How do you know for a fact that the cheap Chinese radar detectors aren't made in the same factory with very similar, if not the same internal parts as an expensive detector? The Chinese are very good at copying designs and making a cheap clone, so how do you know that's not the case with radar detectors?

You must have missed my point completely. I was referring to the fact that I don't go out of my way to look at what type of radar detectors other bikes have. Back when I used to ride I would use earphones to hear the detector.

oh know im up with ya..

"back when you use to ride"?? so you no longer have the lil wee GSXR600 and you dont ride bikes anymore.? so why would you want a RD.?

I don't ride any more because I can't afford it. I still have the GSXR600 but it's going to cost a lot more money to fix than what I have, and there's no point fixing it anyway because I can't afford to run it.

I'm not looking at buying a RD, I just thought I'd join the discussion since I have a little bit of experience with them.

Looks like I might have to put on a skirt and a wig and stand on Manchester St for a while to get the bike going.

Yes it does and if you read up a bit about it you'll know the answers to all your questions.

What's your preference for colour? I'm sure we can come to some sort of "arrangement".

I have a Belltronics 950. It has saved me from a couple of big ones. Worth its weight in gold.

My mate has had a couple of trade me cheapies. He has had 3 in the last 6 years. His picks up a lot of faulty signals and he just doesent trust it the way I trust my Bell detector.

Cheap radar detectors are good at detecting other radar detectors.

Thanks for the feedback fellas, I generally cruise around the speed limit and havent had a speeding ticket for about twenty more years. But the cops are full on here in the Tasman district and getting sneakier. I wouldnt bother with a $8-900 RD but if a cheapy does the job, why not. I still want to hear from some that have them. Heaps have been sold around the world on ebay sites.

I have an STi my son has an el-cheapo, the STi has a much better range (up to 15km) and doesn't get the false signals, but his one sometimes picks up the closer ones sooner (we have intercoms) he's quite happy with his.
