This has probably been posted before but I couldn't find it in the search options.
After crashing my bike a number of years ago I haven't really ridden since. However if the conversation comes up I still call myself a motorcyclist.
So I'm curious to know what you guys think defines a true motorcyclist?
Subike

A Motorcyclist is someone who rides a motorbike, but does not stop after the first crash
Thats like calling yourself a plumber, but stopping after finding the first leek
A police man after arresting the first granny
A doctor aftr delivering the first baby.
Its something that you continue to do once you have learnt it.
If you stop doing it you are an Ex motorcyclist, Ex policeman, Ex Doctor,

Some would say intelligent design, others might say evolution. However with all the knuckle draggers riding harleys I don't think either of those ideas fit. Maybe its a combination of both?

What if the crash took your left leg off just above the knee, making it difficult to change gear?

Have you had a look at a Can-Am Spyder? You only need one good hoof for one of them.

then you get a bike that you can ride, and ride it, there is a link somewhere on this site to a rider who has no left leg or left arm and races his bike on the track in Australia. I have a buddy who rides with no left leg, there is a member on here who has but one arm.. so your point?

Adapt your bike to suit. That's what I did after a bike crash took the use of my left arm.

Yeah! If you don't, you are fucked! The only other "sport" or "recreation" I can compare with biking is skiing. On the road it's you, your bike and the unfortunately other road users.
Up the mountain it's you and the mountain. When it's going we'll that both make you feel like a king!
When it's bad, you might break your leg! That's where good control and judgement comes in. The problem on the road they are dickheads out there.

I used to be a professional photographer, but not anymore so I do not call myself a professional photographer.
Similarly, if I am not riding anymore nor own a bike, I would not call myself a motorcyclist, even if the passion still burned within me. To do so would be like a TT fan calling himself a TT racer just 'cos he has the passion, even though he doesn't race, let alone own a superbike...

Just to add to the mix though, someone ie an older guy who might work on motorbikes even though he doesn't ride anymore may still be considered a motorcyclist to those he helps with their bikes? And may still see himself as one too, doesn't mean he couldn't ride anymore, just that his role isn't necessarily on the bike itself anymore

LOL Well, if he goes around still wearing his riding leathers, boots, gloves and helmet, I guess we could make an exception! Or if he can't ride anymore but still has a working bike sitting in his garage, that'd be passable, I guess...
But in life and as such in many groups, either you are or you ain't. You're not a Harley rider if you like them bikes but don't have one, even if you own typical Harley apparel, e.g. assless chaps. You're not a fisherman if you don't own rods, lines, hooks, net, etc [and use them]. I like guns [but don't own any], that don't make me a gunman [or qualified to handle one]...
Just saying... :msn-wink:

No - at least, not in my definition - a motorbike owner, and maybe even collector but thats like having a car and never driven; one would be an owner but not a driver

As for "motorcyclist" I reckon anyone could call themselves whatever they liked and who really cares what anyone else thinks? I think I'll call myself a runway model. The fact that I don't fit the criteria, or someone else thinks I'm delusional doesn't really matter to me

A motorcyclist is like a unicorn, very rare and beautiful.
A motorcyclist is somebody whom must be very arrogant about their standing as a motorcyclist.
A motorcyclist can not own a Harley or Honda, nor can he own anything other motorcyclists do not like
He/she must ride a certain amount of times, this is a very, very blurry rule, nobody knows.
Most of all, he/she must wear real leather and kill babies with their biceps.
I know that chick! She still got the same bike huh?

A biker rides a pushbike dont they - Chambers dictionary = bike, short for bicycle, therefore a bicycle rider must be a biker. Don't change the subject  Did you mean "bikie" which according to Heinemanns NZ dictionary is a person who "rides a motorbike, often used derogatorily of a reckless rider" That be the Kiwibikie way.

The making of a motorcyclist is brand dependant. A Honda riding motorcyclist is made by mating a hairdresser with a fashion designer.
A Harley rider is forged on the anvils of anarchy and a Moto Guzzi riding motocyclist is a byproduct of a failed engineering experiment.
I have been told not to mention the Germans and Triumph riders are arguable at best.
The making of the Suzuki riding motorcyclist has already been described in the first book of the bible and these motorcyclists are direct decendants of God,whom we all know rode a Sunbeam.
I appologise to any motorcyclist I have neglected to insult, the brand you ride is to insignificant to mention and you should probably log off now and return to your cousins bed.
