I admired BMW motorcycles when I were a lad. They were the epitome of motorcycle engineering but simply unattainable. Rare machines, expensive, utterly reliable, and seldom sold. Most of us owned Triumphs which constantly leaked oil and wouldn't fire, or Japanese bikes which roared and performed, the chrome flaked, the lights flickered, and the frames did rubbery things on corners.

They were epitomised in the Mk III Kwaka 750, the Honda CB750s, and Kawasaki's jaw-dropping Z1. Astonishing bikes which revolutionised motorcycling even while we laboured over BSA 500s.

Meanwhile BMW keep producing their boxer twins. Solid reliable motorcycles which spread throughout the world into the harshest terrains and just kept thundering along. Unstoppable.

In 1991 the NZ Ministry of Transport decide motorcycles were unnecessary and decided to sell they few the had. I was fortunate enough to buy one. $4500.

This bike has hardly been ridden: life changes. Children, mortgages, work...motorcycling had to take a back seat. Eventually I stored the bike for 14 years until re-registration and a few trips to rallies, mainly the Brass Monkey. Then a Ducati seduced me and the BMW went to the back of the garage.

Long story short, my son doesn't really want the bike cos he could end up living overseas, I cannot ride anymore, and I want someone else who appreciates these machines to have this one. So here it is for sale. I'm a bit sad but the bike should be used and enjoyed so here we are.

Forgot to add the bike has a current WOF, the registration is on hold but I think I'll register it for 3 months to be fair to a buyer.

There are stone chips, and two small cracks in the lower fairing which I didn't notice but should mention.

Priced to sell, and it did. I suspect the new owner will be rather pleased with their purchase.

A tidy 80's Police boxer like that is not something that comes up everyday; and those kms are certainly a standout point compared to most still around these days.

Best wishes with your auction, its very generous. Dammit if I wasn't selling I'd be keen to have your extras. For anyone interested, the mirrors on the fairing cost $100 each. And do I count 5 panniers??

Listed on TM this afternoon and two enquiries already which is encouraging. I'm getting a new back tyre: the existing one was virtually unused, got a WOF, but small cracks were visible in one place on the sidewall. I'm guessing this happened when the tyre went flat and it took me a few weeks to get it sorted. But it looks unsafe so got to live with myself - replace it.

Don't know whether anyone is watching this bike but Kiwibiker people have been good to me over the years and I'd like to sell to a member - not logical but there it is.

The number of interested buyers from Trademe have surprised me, its actually difficult to deal with.

One chap wanted to pay a deposit tonight but I refused and said he should first talk to the mechanic who last checked the bike (two weeks ago).

Approx $700 has been spent on it since listing: fork seals, polishing of small pits in forks, new tank filters, service, and a brand new rear tyre.

I don't want to be a smart alec or play people off, I can only sell it once, so offers $4k+ is where it sits.

Who'da thought selling a bike would be so complicated, meaning the need to be honest and upfront while answering a myriad of inquiries.
