Not sure why but for some strange reason when I attached them they turned upside down

Some more pics. It's a genuine Q-code with the 428ci. Unrestored and original, everything works!
All it required for Vinning was one drop-arm.

That's fine, you'd probably do nothing for it either... That's why I titled it as I did.

This is the old mans ute, imported from the states about 6 years ago, had been stipped back and all rust taken out, repainted and the vynl roof taken off and painted over, the ding you see is from the old lady :oi-grr: but have new skins coming to be welded into place. 1969 Chev El camino its running a 454 big block .

I knew you'd appreciate it! He won't say how much it cost, of course but he uses Jay Leno's guy to check vehicles out for him. He got five checked before the guy recommended this one.
I have two vids of it including putting the top up and down but can't upload them to KB.
He's got a book which catalogues everything you can still buy for them which is almost literally everything including nuts and bolts and grommets! Incredibly cheap!

PS. He's not the type of guy who goes to Beach Hops but would welcome you to come and see it if you're ever up this way. He likes showing it to those who like classics and would take you for a ride anytime.

If I'm up your way I'll let you know and maybe I'll be able to have a look at his '66?

Just took us for a cruise in it. You don't drive one of these around town if you are a shrinking violet, that's for sure! Stopped at a harbour side cafe and there was a constant stream of admirers looking at it and taking pics.
I can vouch that 350hp is still plenty enough to get the old girl going and cause some stress to the rear tyres...

Mine's only a 390, only 335hp
And I'm too worried about nurking the old Cruise-o-matic to see how much stress the rear tyres can hsndle...;)

I'm guessing at the power as the spec list he's got is for the 390 and that says 345hp. May be some variation in listings?
I think it's done 79,000 miles.
Was the Cruise-o-matic the 3sp? This one is. I think I'll read his catalogue again, it's Larry's Thunderbird and Mustang Parts, 1958-1966.

Yeah, the c-o-m is a three-speed but heavy and not up to a lot of abuse.
428 T-birds like your mates came with a C-6, also three-speed but lots tougher.

Ah, okay. Apparently the only way to prove it is the 428 is there was a Q stamped on the rear of the block. Before he brought it in he had everything fixed and tidied up in the States which included removing the trans for something and he's got the photo of that Q to show. The difference was the 428 had a longer stroke and they stamped the block so the assembly workers could tell which motor they were fitting.
Quite a few had their engines swapped out because they looked identical and were sold with the 390 instead. So hard to know whether you were buying the genuine 428ci.

Bottom pulley is different as the 428 is externally balanced, it has a counter-weight.
And stroke is longer, easily measure by taking out a spark-plug and running a length of brazing-rod down the plug-hole and noting how far it travels between piston fully up vs fully down.
Otherwise easy to 'pretend' a 390 is a 428.

I knew you'd have a good knowledge of them, Paul is an enthusiast but not really a petrol-head. He's smart enough to know who to ask though which is why he uses the likes of Jay Leno's guy to check vehicles out. He sends him a list of cars and this guy goes through and decides how many he will actually check and tells Paul why and why not.
Only work this one needs now is door and hood compartment rubbers and the lock for the central console fixing.
He's got the spoke wheels but also has the original set of hubcaps for the standard wheels which were still with the car. About the only option it doesn't have is air-con. His daughter bought him a matching tote bag which fits nicely in the boot and has the original tool kit in it now.

428's (including the CJ) can be identified by the "428" cast into the bottom of the water jacket right under the center frost plug. Gotta love those CJ 428's.

The adjective that kept coming to mind was "effortless". Up a steep local hill he barely touched the throttle and 100km/h felt like 70. Totally relaxing cruise.

Yeah, vin has a Q in it for the 428, a Z in it if a 390 (the only motor options of that year)
However an unscrupulous person could easily swap motors and few would know - given the lack of obvious-at-first-glance differences...

This is that Mustang we told you about. Ferkin sure it was only 8 grand when we first saw it.
Bit rough, but seems cheap enough with the low specifications.

Just got back from a road trip around the Norf Isle and there was lots of lovely old tin, both hot rodded and restored, out and being used.Everything from a bunch of old baby austins tootling along at 70km to an outrageous early 70s mustang with the blower poking out of the bonnet that zapped me just south of Taupo.

I just love cars. And bikes, planes, boats... Okay, if it has an engine I'm interested! My Dad was a Ford man and had some classics, a '48 Mercury sedan, black of course, then the '56 Customline, then a '66 Zodiac. I've had all makes and most models and none I didn't like.
