Once again found on Stuff.co.nz ( dont know why I read this shit .)

Anyway, if I give my survival tips, maybe fellow motorcyclists would respond with theirs that I can maybe start using?
When travelling straight through an intersection where traffic coming from the other direction is about to turn right across your path, tailgate the car in front, to not give the right turning vehicle the opportunity to turn across your path. ... Sorry what ?
But I was told that tailgating is dangerous....

Somebody needs to go do some training rather than making it up as they go along. The last place I want to be is sat up somebody's chuff.

What a wuss, lol, remember though it's his version of keeping safe. He did write about "temporarily" tailgating later on however.

This is worse than the advice you would find on KB & if a new rider were to see this well now ...... Maybe he is hoping that more people take his "advice" so they all bin & then the gooberment will deem motorcycling to be dangerous and make us all pay lots of money to register our bik...... oh wait, never mind as you were

got off the phone to this guy .... he is not qualified as a motorcycling instructor, these are his thoughts on what makes you a safer motorcyclist ...
He could not see what was wrong with what he has stated on that article

He contradicts himself several times...
... and seriously needs to go on a riding course to get some insight that WILL actually keep him safer...

Two ways of looking at it. 1; he shouldn't be spouting on about something he's not qualified on.
2; He's entitled to have an opinion on a subject and express that opinion.
Neither view is going to win.

Yeah that is fine if he wants his view but it should be stated on there that he is " Not Qualified as an instructor"

Yeah as in STUFF.CO.NZ Reader Report .... It is their lazy way of getting content ... your average joe blogs can write shit & sent it & it gets printed online .

That's why it's important to read things carefully and not go off half cocked.

The guy is not a dedicated motorcyclist, he simply rides a bike .... not the same thing!

It's an "assignment" (Whatever that might mean on stuff.co ...) usually a piece of drivel from an over-educated young person called "a student" ... and therefore drivel ...

I've read that comment over and over and feel like I'm missing some sort of contextual information that will help define what you just said.

It was in reference to the fact that it's important to see who wrote the article. In this case, as I wrote earlier, it was just a reader report ie: not from a motorcycle instructor. Cheers.

Thanks for all the tips and the link etc. I will have a look.
Maybe 'tailgating' was too strong a word...
I guess I should say any collision is bad but a rear-ender should be less damaging... like roundabouts being better than intersections. On a roundabout you are more likely to get side-swiped or rear-ended which is better than t-boned at an intersection, but Cantabrians don't know how to negotiate roundabouts so most have been removed.
Point taken on the Kaikoura stretch, and I'm sure there will be some other non-suitable for motorway portions.
Stuff did edit it things a bit; around town, I was suggesting if you have time to be on the right hand side of the vehicle you are following when a right turning vehicle is sitting in an intersection... the idea being you're giving the person sitting there a chance to see your headlight(s).
Then, just before you traverse the intersection say 10 metres behind the car in front, you move over to follow the left hand tyre of the car in front. Once through the intersection drop back and get over to the right again.
To the person who mentioned the travel writer (Charley Boorman ?) I agree. I would love to go wild on NZ South Island roads when there is not one other vehicle on them at the same time as me...
I can't really argue with the guy who says I should pack it in as I'm too paranoid... I wasn't like this in Europe.
I actually cycle commute much more than I bike, and just this morning I had that classic where I got overtaken by a car as I'm 4m from a main road, so I rode out with the guy. He seemed surprised.
I actually didn't think the article was too controversial, but I've had a call from an Auckland biker who was not happy, saying that some professionals were horrified at the suggestions, so I may need to pull my head in.
I guess the debate is always good. It's the only thing that will change anything.
YES, to the guys who say ride like you're invisible, and everyone out there wants to kill you; most can't be bothered to go through with it, because of all the messy litigation involved, but there are always a few exceptions...
To finish, I'm sure that all you fellow bikers out there already know that the colour of adrenaline is... brown...

Finally, I'm not particularly interested in speed on a motorcycle.
Enough said. Move along.

One big road down the middle of the South island? great idea, but who would ride on it?
He's a cyclist so thinks he has some sort of moral highground to comment on other road users.
