Finally got round late last year to getting my Learners and managed to pick up a very tidy 2008 Kawasaki EX250 Ninja over the weekend, already been out on a couple of 40-50 min rides from the Tron to Morrinsville and Tron to Te Awamutu getting a feel for the open road speeds, still working on getting all riding style sorted but feeling reasonably confident so far(though stalling at every 2nd intersection is starting to be a pain in the ass).
Anyway looking forward to seeing everyone out there.
BTW if you're in the tron and see a black Ninja with big bloody L plate stuck to the tail thats probably me.

Nice bike. Sounds like you might want to find a carpark and work on changing down and/or using the clutch when stopping  Some drivers are not that forgiving of learners.

arrrh hill starts  Daughter just did her BHS lessons and test, I was impressed when they threw in some hill start training. Go to the car park and practice finding the clutch point, the point at which the clutch engages. On a hill you will require more throttle than on the flat but knowing the clutch point gives you control.

I have seen a couple of newbies pop the front wheel up doing hill starts, still makes me giggle. Everyone has got to learn sometime, keep at it.:Punk:

Welcome to the site. Hill starts are the bane of all learner riders. Of some full licensed riders too.
Arrive at the intersection in first gear ... keep the foot on the brake with the clutch in and in gear. 2000 RPM ... light changes ... slowly let the clutch out until you feel it want to move ... throttle on as the clutch goes further out .. and you're away.

Not many hills in the Tron haha. Just give it shitloads more revs than what you would expect it to need. Car drivers won't think you're dumb, they won't hear you revving the lil bike over the sound of their radios. :msn-wink:

Awesome, thanks for the tips. Will try and find myself a quietish hill somewhere to practice on.

I started riding on the road around the shore, but by then I had been riding off road for a wee while. That was back in the days when albany still had orchards and dairy farms. Was a great place to ride around in them days, not so sure I would enjoy being a newbie rider up there now though. You need an old shitter that you can take out and thrash about somewhere off road, your bike handling skills would improve in leaps and bounds(but that may just be bunny hopping).:Punk:

That would be awesome I'd like to do that one day.
Anyway enough thread jacking. OP, you'll be fine, I bet in a few weeks you'll be like wtf was I ever worrying about?! Best thing is though, in your own time, I guess, face your fear! For me, it's been good because I didn't want to be going on an "adventure" and get to something (like a hill start) where I was like OMFG what do I do... and ruin my whole ride. It's not easy though, the feeling in the pit of your tummy!

Actually ... it easier to practice on a straight DOWNHILL street/road. You still need the brake to stop you moving. Almost the same ... but if you get it wrong ... fewer issues (like stalling)
Also good for practicing changing the foot on the ground to change down gears to first to start off ... if you didn't get first before you stopped.
