There is the saying, if you can't afford a new European you can't afford a second hand one.

And an early worm gets killed :innocent:
Don't see the hassle myself, just buy a car with good history and generally it's fine, know where to shop for parts etc
I got a new radiator for my Ovlov 850 recently for a whopping $214nz delivered.
Front struts were around the same price for OEM (Sachs-Boge).
It cost me more for a rear Hyundai Lantra strut, at trade cost, than an Ovlov one, or a Biltsien for an E36

Peoples needs edumacations, or keep selling me "horrible, unreliable eurotrash"

 I had that exact phrase in my head last week, I was looking at a 2009 Volvo C30.

Nice drive, sat nice and flat and the 2.4 5 cyl wasn't bad. But I ended up with a Toyota Blade.

I'd like to tell myself that :D people have been known to pay me to ruin their cars on a regular basis though

Wouldn't be surprised about that. I got mine for free and it's a '95... I'll have to pay someone to take it next year?

Astute comments from a man in the game. Problem can be people can afford to buy the Audi/merc/french POS but expect to run them on a "toyota" budget!

True dat!

Fuck off, I'd just sold 'Er indoors WRX and was trying to wean her off gratuitous horsepower in a commuter. I had to tread carefully in order to avoid potential comparisons with the LOKI.

Mrs. Bear would love a WRX. I saw a lovely blue one in Wingers when I had the Kizashi in for its last service. A horsepower bargain! She doesn't mind gratuitous horsepower in anything...

Got a first generation Poobaru Legacy GT. Brilliant bang for buck, mine owes me $1300 although I did build it out of two separate cars. Not as unreliable as everyone says, parts are very cheap and a lot of stuff from later WRXs bolts straight up - alloy A arms, 4 pot brembos, struts, drivelines, transmissions, engines, seats.

They are good value, if you get a decent one. There's a significant lack of decent ones though, the majority are fucked  I've fixed a shedload, but, there's been a few really good ones in the mix.

Think the Blade superceded the Runx. Supposed to be their "flagship" up-spec hatch.

I had a GT30 for a couple of years. Similar HP, but smooth as silk. Only sold it because it was getting up towards 150k, and local inteligence had it they were best owned by someone else after that. I think they've got that same motor in a legacy shell nowadays, (not NZ) but blown.

Hers has a CVT gearbox, which I had to talk to my local expert about. He said it's fine, faster than either manual or auto and reliable. Feels weird, though. You can switch it to flappypaddle mode if you insist on having actual "gears", in which case it simply divides the range into 7 set ratios and pretends it's a particularly smooth 7 stage auto. Tell you what, though, it takes a minute to figure out what's going on when the traction control kicks in.

And you can get an AWD version, which I'd probably have looked at if I'd decided on the V6 option. But by that stage common sense is pretty well out the window anyway.

I'm a fan of CVT in theory, but not any CVT with a torque converter, defeats the purpose.
Having the option to play flappy paddle is great
A mate of mine had a '10 Corolla 1.5 VVTi CVT AIDS etc, was a useless pile of shit. Hungry for a 1.5, very gutless and handled like a penis in a vacuum on Jupiter. Never enjoyed the feeling of CVT

There's no "kick" as it changes, so it feels decidedly sluggardly, it's not until you look down at the speedo after a couple of seconds that you realise it's not.

Toyota's version looks like this:

Modern CVT's are very good. The Kizashi is a wee bit sluggish just off the mark but by the time you are halfway across the intersection it is really picking up speed. Trick is not to use full throttle, about half and then feed it in as speed increases.

Stated 0 - 100 is 8 sec which is ballpark for the class and top speed is supposed to be 205, and I have little doubt that it would do that easily. Manual is a bit quicker and faster. On the open road and especially in the twisties it is a very fast car and recently had fun with a Commodore with
a young fellow behind the wheel. He couldn't keep up even though I had the Missus with me and had to keep reasonably safe for her.

Very quick from about 75km/h for overtaking. About the best torque figure in its class even though a couple of Kw down at the top end. It's torque that counts on the road.

I never understood CVT on anything bigger than 1L. I put this in the same field of FWD.

Too cheap to do properly.

A proper 2L+ car does not have CVT, it has DSG. Likewise it would not be FWD it would be 4WD or RWD.
But people are too cheap to build it/buy it. Myself include.

It kinda like a faulty tower skit really.
"What do you mean you wanted an automatic manual that changed gears. No this CVT does that, yes we can put in a double clutch gearbox in but you haven't even tried the belts yet"

I'm not trying to say that at all, what I'm trying to say is that just because a car is FWD doesn't automatically make it a poor handling shitbox. These days it's illegal to use a RWD to its potential on public roads anyway.

I passed and was subsequently passed by a lady in a Z3 this morning heading into town on the Northern M/way. The Z3 was a bit of a failure for BMW but the Z4 went a long way to correcting that. However only ToyBaru since have managed to recapture the essence of the MX5 in making an affordable, fun sports car. Not too powerful but handles brilliantly and looks good doing it. Yup! The S2000 for me and the MX5 for Mrs. Bear.

Only downside is it's still not a convertible.

I wouldn't buy a new MX5 though, too dear and too complex. Having said that I might change my mind if I get to drive one... :innocent:

The S2K is by far my favourite of the more affordable 4 cyl sports cars  I agree on the MX5 front too, I love the way the NA series drive, no P/Steering models are my favourite, just a basic, fun little toy

Remember the S15 Silvia Spec R though? That was extremely good value, around $48k nz new I think, for a car that'd go 'round corners, up hills, look great and it was fast too. Sadly, the whole boxer 4 doesn't float my pickle in the 86/BRZ, but there's no denying they're awesome

The S15 was trialled by the Plice in the Waikato as pursuit cars. Not sure what the outcome was on that but I bet the drivers loved them!

I drove a GT86 auto and loved it! Crisp auto changed my mind about preferring the manual and it had plenty of "go".

I heard one of them got crashed? (the S15) Great car those

Haven't had the chance to drive one yet.
Interesting fact, on paper they're pretty similar to an E30 M3. Having been in one recently, I can testify 200hp can still be a giggle. It was certainly no ball of fire, but it was just excellent! Sadly, it's no gruntier, or better than my brother's Msport suspended manual E36, which is worth nothing!

Yes,I doubt the haters have had any experience in MX5s. I personally find their build quality a bit cheap in places and lacking the quality of say an sw20 mr2, but for a rear wheel drive sports car that is affordable, handles brillantly and is reliable, they are unbeatable IMHO. I have had 4, so I guess I must like em! They are hard to easily modify re power output and suspension really only needs good shocks and sticky tyres to be sublime.

If you're there for the next one you'll se the bro-in-law doing it in an 86.

Was reading an article about them when they were released over there, and one comment from the OE rep stood out like dogs balls. Asked if there were any plans to offer them with turbos he said: "Toyota have no plans to make the 86 anything other than naturally asperated for the current 2 year build cycle." He then apparently got all coy and wouldn't elaborate. So while I think they've hit the nail firmly on the head with the current spec' I wouldn't be astonished to learn that 2015 revealed a blown 86.

Another story from the same article suggested that Toyota, (who own a controling interest in Subaru's parent co) approached Subaru and asked them to develop the boxer engine for a new rear wheel drive car. Subaru said: No, we don't do that class of engine, neither NA or RWD. Mr Toyota simply replied: "You do now."

Yeah, but as you say, they are so much fun standard I wouldn't need to upgrade the power by much. I've spent most of my life driving vehicles of, shall we say, "modest power" that I get a kick out of getting the very best out of them.

for all the people who aren't visual learners: it's a 3.3lt hex carb v12 making about 260 bhp. it was the last race car to use spoke wheels, because, with the pirelli tyres made specifically for it, it kept snapping drive shafts and delaminating tyres. i think there were about 12 made. it's sex on four wheels.

One reason for the popularity of the MX5. How many exotics can get to 19 years old and 185,000km with only regular servicing, no major repairs and can still be thrashed at the redline in total confidence? Sure the exotics go fast, but as you point out, most are only suitable for special occasions. Unless you can afford a Porsche, of course...

I spent a couple of days commuting in it while wifey was away with the Kizashi. While it is as ever a joy to drive and as much fun as you can have with your pants on, I ended up rather sore. It took several days for my back to recover, and after talking it over with Mrs. Bear and finding she is also having entry and egress issues we feel it is time to get something that doesn't cause pain.

So once again we will be putting it on TradeMe but will wait until I have fixed the passenger window. The electric motor died and it will cost about $100.00 to fit a replacement.

All serious offers will be considered. We aren't going to give it away though.

I drove one and it really impressed me! The fact that it uses a tried and proven truck running gear is another plus. The engines go forever and are less demanding to service. It is (just), the most economical of the big utes, several thousand dollars cheaper than the Ranger/B50 and Amarok, (my second choice), and very comfortable for my back. I also think the black Swazi edition looks fab! :first:

Well now we really have sadly decided to sell it. We've decided to get a camper van as being more practical for us now. If I could afford to buy the camper and keep the car I would even though I can't drive it much any more.

It's on Trade Me for $4,900. 00. Less than it owes us but there are a lot of them for sale now. Naturally it has a Shorai battery. Being the '94 1800 manual, it's the best model and the most sought after.

We are going to miss it almost as much as the C50T. :(

Nah, last slow van we had was an old Commer and I wrote a few funnies on the back doors so everyone would pull in behind us, read the doors and then pass laughing and tooting giving me the thumbs up. I always try to be considerate of following traffic.

Although, it seems to get along off the line pretty quick, the new utes have retardedly tall gearing, and you have to give them quite a bit of welly, or you bog in the next gear. It's the apple of my eye and can never do no wrong :bleh:

They tow fine, the Hilux have power only low down (gutless bloody things) so the long-ish gearing works well in them. Used one in the Silver Fern rally as a chase vehicle and it did well, apart from being very slow and handling like a duck with diphtheria :(

Well, Mrs. Bear had a change of mind, as women are wont to do. She decided that an economical small car would be more practical and give her more freedom and flexibility. So we have bought a nice small four door hatchback. It's got all the bells and whistles, and is a fresh import from a very nice man. Mrs. Bear loves the reversing camera and the DVD player and the way you just press the button to close the hatch.

So now, naturally, she wants to park it in the garage. Unfortunately we still haven't sold the MX5. It's on Trade Me for $4900, but I will consider reasonable offers. Notice the word reasonable there. ..

That was my last resort as dealers don't want cars this old and only offer a very low price and send them to the auctions. I got the car for Mrs. Bear for a bit over half the written valuation and $1500 below its trade in value so I can't complain. We don't mind if the MX5 takes a while to sell. My son-in-law wants it but they’re spending a lot on their house and building another unit on their section so free cash is non - existent.

Nope haven't seen the article - but after getting the wife the new impreza I have to admit the new suspension and where they have placed the engine.....I see huge potential with having the setup in the BRZ. Even more so than the MX5 I drove 15 years ago. It has a lower center of gravity than the MX5, and an interesting torque curve and power delivery.
I expect to see a BRZ turbo next year.......there was nothing except new outback in the New York Autoshow.
