View Full Version : Sadly we've decided to sell our beloved MX5

Yeah, I know it's not a bike but it is the next best thing and is the best fun you can have on four wheels on the road. :sunny:
However we have to be realistic and we haven't been using it very much of late as it is very low to get in and out of and not the best thing for my back these days. Mrs. Bear is also feeling her age, (), and while still enjoying the drive as I do, is hankering after a more practical vehicle that is easier to get in and out of.
So reluctantly we have decided to put it on the market and see what interest there might be so I'm putting it on KB first.
It is a 1994 1800 manual, Series 1, the NA, and arguably the best of them all. Has the chassis upgrade to improve the handling and the 1800 motor gives a lot more torque for road driving.
Cambelt and water pump were done, wheels and tyres are upgraded 15" alloys and have 90% tread. Soft top is average but still doesn't need replacing. Extra's are MOMO sterring wheel and pedals, front and rear spoilers, chrome sill plates.
Goes fast, drinks slow, (37mpg), and you have to experience the handling and steering to believe it!
It is in average to tidy condition, and we have looked after it. It always flies through a WoF with the only thing needed in the last couple of years, a side-light bulb. I have a new oil filter and 4lt Castrol Magnatec for its next service that can go with the car. No air-con as I removed the pump, saving about 15kg in the nose and swapped in a Shorai battery in the boot, saving 11kg there. Everything else works fine.
Oh, price..? We'll ask $6,900, it is ready to go and only needs a cut and polish, which we'll do soon.

Air-con was not working when we bought it and needed an overhaul which we decided was not worth it. Open-top sports cars don't need air-con.

It would take a very quick and capable rider to get too far ahead of me in the MX5 around a twisty road! If the straight bits were quite short, I wouldn't guarantee a bike would win unless the rider was up there with the top guns.

You really should borrow a sports car and take it on a twisty road sometime. You simply don't slow down for corners, you usually accelerate around them to maintain your speed. When you only have 130hp every kilo saved in weight means something. The Honda S2000 has 240hp and around the same weight. Now that is a real road weapon!

If you recall my comment I didn't say I could smoke a sports bike rider, I said he/she would have to be fairly good to get too far ahead of me. As for my comment about equalling a bike I said "if the straights were short". Around the likes of the Coro the average 250 would gap most sports cars with less than 250hp. Too many straights and hills.

They are what the MGB should have been! Easy to live with is an understatement! The torque means you don't need to change down if you don't feel like it but get the revs up and she flies! Others have more power but are less able to trundle.

I'd like to see that. Bikes just don't go around corners as fast as cars (generally speaking). An MX5 is a very good handling car (in comparison to most other road cars), and it would take a very competent rider on a good bike to out corner an MX5 driven by a good driver on a tight, twisty mountain road.
I'd still rather have a decent sports bike though.

That's the sort of logic that made it the great sales success it was,,,along with Hondas 50cc scooter being the best selling bike of all time.
Unfortunately it totaly misses the fact sportscars and motorcycles are not about the money.
It's also where the logic behind the old joke about fat women being like scooters came from.

I tried to have some fun twice on the 600 with an Audi and a Porsche 911. I nearly lost it keeping up with the Audi on one corner and just gave up on the Porsche. Fat feet and four wheel drive corner a lot faster. Not so much of a problem on straights or hills although the Porsche was as quick as me there too. I had to let him go in the end before I did something stupid and died.
The MX5 has bigger and wider sports tyres and the smaller steering wheel sharpens the steering. It corners like a Limpet and you'd be amazed how good it is. As I said, you don't slow down for corners, you gas it to maintain your speed against the drag.

That's where you're wrong. It wasn't sold as a cheap car, seen the price of new? It sold millions because it was a proper sports car that did what people wanted.

That's where you're wrong. It wasn't sold as a cheap car, seen the price of new? It sold millions because it was a proper sports car that did what people wanted.
Yup! The Kizashi is nearly as quick around corners and "most" riders are very slow out there. Only the KB select few are good...
Compered to a Lambo or other "real sports car" ,,,it's expensive ?
Mate I could afford one new or old,,,that actually makes it CHEAP.
it did what it did,,or does for a price.
Not knocking it for what it is,,,but it's affordability means that compearing it to the more excepted "sports cars" which are "Very expensive" is one of those apples to apples things,,,,,that's all.:innocent:

I usually find "the average rider" farking slow on windy roads. Ok bikes get off the mark quickly but they are very slow in the corners, espcially going into the corners.
I won't say when,,but I had a Ford Capri once,,,,never came across a bike that could stay with it in the twistys.
If I see a particular type of car in the mirrors now days I'll often pull over,,,,just to admire the view you understand.

In my street lives an AMG Merc., a Maserati, a mint Model A and their visitors arrive in Bentley's and Ferrari's. Harley's and Gold Wings and a couple of sports bikes are here and attract their own visitors...:sunny:

That's a dumb comparison. Lambo's and Ferrari's aren't sports cars, they're in a class called "super-cars" because they're insanely expensive, stupidly fast and pretty exclusive. In my book, there are "cars", "sports cars", "performance cars", "luxury cars", "super cars" and "hyper-cars". Then you get all the sub categories like hot rods, classics, muscle cars, exotics and the like. An MX5 or MR2/MR-S fits into the sports car definition at the lower end of the scale with a Lotus Elise in the midde somewhere and a standard 911 or Aston DB9/DBS towards the top. That's like comparing a Timex to a Tag Heuer.

The big plus with it was/is the incredible steering and handling which was up with any car of any price. Even at 19 years old, our Mk1 is fabulous to drive and at 187,000km can still be driven at the redline in total confidence. No rust and the soft-top is original. Gearbox is sweet and diff is silent. All I've done is replace the rear suspension due to a warn damper. Cost me $160 all up for both sides complete struts fitted! Not new of course but good units from Ross at MX5 Mart.

Bolting in a non original engine (and turbo) isn't the simple process it used to be. Lengthy sessions of form filling in ... and certification checks ($$$$) and then may not pass first time through.
And if the due and proper process wasn't followed ... you get shown the door without the bonnet being lifted.

That works briefly until you burn out the clutch and blow the gearbox or diff, or all three. Then you need to upgrade brakes and suspension... It becomes self-defeating if you don't.

I was disappointed to find the newer 6sp models had the same top gear ratio so not the overdrive I expected. I see no need for more than the 5 in ours. The stock running gear will take a bit more power but if you add another hundy horses you would definitely need to upgrade unless you don't mind a short life for it.

How many euros have you owned mate? I've owned a few and I wouldn't say they're any more unreliable than the japs. Perhaps I have been lucky?
I know that when they do break though you need a competent tech (one who knows how to use a scope if needed to figure out what's happening), not a pants on head dumbass with a great big hammer to diagnose and replace it properly.
Most workshops in NZ seem to fall in the latter category.
Have heard many horror stories with "thousands of dollars spent, car still not right" situations. Maybe due to the rarity of euros or due to the insufficient skillset and tooling of most workshops who basically barely qualify as backyard mechanics. The "throwing parts at it" approach is especially ineffective.

SMG is yuck anyway, not nice to live with. I've repaired a few VANOS units on various models, they're not stupidly hard to do, nor are they very expensive. Cheaper than doing the AYC on an Evo 4... A large issue with VANOS (early ones, two issues actually) is the earlier units didn't hold pressure whilst the engine's off and they won't receve oil pressure until 2700rpm (hence cold start rattles on S50 and M50 motors), then there's the wombles who run the wrong oils, cook the oils or don't change it often enough.
I'll take a 3.2 Evo manual thanks :D or a 3.0, I'm not a fussy fella

I did mention the mileage along with the confidence in the reliability.
I don't know what oil it has had in it but the MX5 forums recommend Magnatec to better look after the hydraulic lifters. These motors have fine tolerances and if not regularly serviced the lifters can gum up and rattle. We haven't done a lot of miles in it and it is near to a service.

4Cyl Beemers? Run away fast if you're ever offered one, especially the 1600's.
The most reliable of the Euro's are the VW group, but second hand vehicles can give trans trouble. Main issue wuth the Euro's is their electrics which are notorious for playing up and everything is electronically controlled. Ask Classic_Z, he's a Euro expert and often gets to fix botched attempts by other garages to sort the problem out. Audi's first attempt at CVT was a disaster, too.
Off topic? Well, at least it emphasises the attraction of our MX5, which at 19 years old and 185,000km is dead reliable, great to drive and would run rings around many newer and far more expensive cars. :sunny:

Manufacturers are cramming more and more electrical stuff into cars these days and trying to do it at a cost point. Many would like to go to 48V electrics and battery makers are cramming more plates into their batteries to try to cope with the demand. That's why I don't recommend Shorai for modern cars until they come out with a greater reserve capacity. They'll start any car, but don't have the reserve for the likes of 10-way electrically adjustable heated seats and all the other paraphenalia.

Many small niggles with late Yaris', Corollas (had a few trans issues, and a fair few oil eating issues on many, many post 2000 Toyotas), there's the ol' Hilux injector/pump problems, doing reverse gears in Hiluxs, gear linkages, shit brakes forever cooking. They did a lovely trick I've been happy to work with, the snap on steering boots, fantastic idea.
A few oil pump leaks on middle aged FE motors (3S, 5S etc). Tie rods in Altezzas (not really a big issue, but very common), auto boxes throwing their guts everywhere.
Etcetera etcetera
They're no longer superbly reliable. I think the best engines they made (petrol, boring, reliable wise) were the late 4AFE and 5SFE, these have by far been the most trouble free ('cept for all the oil leaks) and seem to do bonkers milage (see my reply to Unstuck)
There does seem to be a theme of mid 2000s fouyr cylinders using significant amounts of oil though
Never had a toyota I did not like. Never had one later than a 95 though. :Punk:
This might be the key, mind you we have a '96 Corolla that'll pop half a million by half way through the year, only thing that's been replaced that isn't a service item is a radiator. Still original clutch, shocks, motor, box... horrible car, but it's reliable and okay on gas

Latest news is that Toyota's recalls will top the million vehicles for a variety of issues.
Our '99 Nissan Pulsar was still going as good as new after just under 200,000k. One CV joint replaced only. Not common, though for them. Only sold it because of my accident and the seats were uncomfortable after the surgery.
Our Kizashi is just coming up 42,000km in 20 mths and only had a minor chip upgrade a few months ago to improve starting fueling. Running upgrade with no issues. CVT is great and I expect another ten years trouble free. Had the Pulsar from new for 12 years, too.

Most reliable? Early 90's corollas take some beating...My mate got one and did 120000km without changing the oil even, and she was still mint as when we pulled the engine for a 4agze.
Euro's....service 'em by the book from new, you'll spend as much as buying a corolla each time, but they do last well if it's done. Buy a jap import and get some local 'garage' to do it and good luck....
Funny what you say about the 380 ed, one of the Mrs mates had a diamante and it went right against the grain and was reliable as.
My mate in aus had a VZ Commy, did 2 engines in the first 10,000 k's.
Ford nz pulled all the steering racks outta the BA's before sale and had 'em all rebuilt because they were all failing....
I could go on for hours/days on this subject...

I don't work on GTOs anymore  some other person's problem, can't be fucked with 'em.
Euro cars: buy carefully, then you'll be fine. We've had a fair few and all have been great (exception of my old 525 snapping a rocker during some... err high revs and fast moving rear tyres) but not a hard fix.
Ah, VZ, I take it he had a 3.6 and it decided to stretch some rather important chains? Or a V8, laboured hard as fuck and shitting the ring lands?
The BA 'coon is a very problematic turd

V8...from memory it ran the big ends/mains and pretty much fucked everything else too. Got replaced with a complete new engine under warranty both times. Daryl wouldn't know how to labour an engine :shit:

Not my cuppa. Very fast and impressive, but it has appalling paint, it's ugly as fuck, it's heavy as fuck and it sounds like shit. I'd rather something light and slow, if I want straight line speed I'll hop on my bike.
Gimmie a second hand GT3 for the same coin, any day. Or an F355, with change.
The rather eccentirc, yet awesome LFA is faster than the GT-R anyway. And makes a good noise.

In a straight line maybe, but then don't forget the LFA costs 5 times as much as a GTR.
Euro's? Imported? Sell boat loads of them. Yup early Audi CVTs were shit, BMW 4 cylinders burn oil, Mercedes well anything is pricey on them, e39 and X5 dashes lose lights, VW are fine but good luck if a DSG box shits itself. Pity because they are sweet gearboxes. VW R32 rear diff? Better have $8k nearby and time to wait while they build one for you in Germany. We almost traded a Volvo with a shot tranny once, inquired what a replacement was worth. Are you sitting down? Good. $35,000.
Servicing of Euros is not necessary a great deal more than certain Japanese cars. And when you think what your 2004 Audi A4 1.8t gives you for $18k compared to say an 04 Caldina for $16k, you're getting a fuck load of car. Just remember though, that Audi cost $100k from new, the Toyota maybe $38-42. They will cost more to repair for a reason.
I agree with most people's sentiments about Mitsubishi, with the standout exception of the 05 onwards 2.4 Outlander. We have sold dozens of these and they don't come back with faults.
Now to me, NZ has for a long time been a Toyota country. Corolla, Corona, Camry and Hilux. Names that everyone recognised. Now Toyota had diversified too much in my opinion, especially in their home market, to the point that they suffer in poor quality control. Biggest selling mid sized car for us currently is the Mazda Atenza. 2.0 or 2.3 they sell sell sell. Great reputation for reliability and a name that a lot of people now recognise. Biggest selling small'ish car? Mazda Axela, preferably 1.5 or 2.3. The 2.0 doesn't appear on most people's radars, they ether want economy and reliability or power and reliability. Resale for both these vehicles strong. Now I see NZ being less of a Toyota nation. The swing isn't fully there but it's gently falling away from Toyota.

It's cost me less to service my Euro cars than any same age Jap car I've owned.
But, I'd never touch an Audi, unless it's a very old 5 cyl and manual, with mech injection.
I wouldn't buy a Merc, purely because they don't interest me.
Even my big beige Volvo is very cheap to fix, just have to know where to buy parts (that's the key) and I'm a mechanic, so I do my won work.
I'm not a fan of most VAG cars, done too many ABS and airbag repairs on them, too many auto boxes and too many snapped cambelts (a trick the Pugs are very good at too)

.
The LFA is faster around the 'Ring. Faster than a GT2 RS
The Gallardo SG is faster around Tsukuba.
The F360 CS and 458 are faster around there too.
But, no denying you cannot beat the GT-R for value for a new supercar. And it's fucked up fast for something that weighs as much as Mexico.

They'll start any car, but don't have the reserve for the likes of 10-way electrically adjustable heated seats and all the other paraphenalia.
my 1990 BMW 535 had 10 way adjustable electric seats. It also had a battery under the back seat to suit(and a 25AH auxillary in the boot). It started to do strange things if the battery was near the end of its life.I got a proper battery for it,ie what BMW actualy recomended.I dint have any issues after that. And for the record i got the 535 at 140ks and sold it at 260ks.I had it for about 8 years used every day.It let me down once.Fantastic car.

My favourite model is the earlier 320/325's the six cyl manual ones. Apart from those I wouldn't bbuy one but glad to hear you had a good run.
I don't want to sell it really but if we get offered decent money it will go towards getting Mrs. Bear a car she can get into and out of easier. Recently she suffered a health reversal that means she has to be very careful with her movements for the foreseeable future and the car is just too low and hard for her to get out of now.

Astute comments from a man in the game. Problem can be people can afford to buy the Audi/merc/french POS but expect to run them on a "toyota" budget!
