http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/8408827/NZ-banks-to-face-fee-class-action

And sign up here, no win no legal fees.

https://www.fairplayonfees.co.nz/

Yeah, the banks must be crapping themselves over this, as it is the largest single class action ever undertaken in NZ
I'm signed up

I think the site's overloaded... it wouldn't surprise me. I'd probably not bother because I basically never get stung with late/penalty fees (and when I have, my personal banker has reversed them for me ;) ) BUT since almost all of the banks are owned by 'Strayan companies, I'll sign up when I can :niceone:

I'll be into that. Westpac charge $25 the thieving bastards. I'll be in just for the satisfaction of costing them a lot of money and watching them squirm.

The bank I use (USBank) charges $40 per transaction if you go into overdraft if you have no OD protection set up.
The moral of the story is keep an eye on your spending and don't go into OD.

Rang bank last week to complain about a unauthorised payment - the payment had put that account into OD. The bank then charged me $15 for it going into OD. When I called them and made a fuss to talk to a manager they then charged me another $15 for the phone call...

Given that lawyers have often been compared to a well known aggressive and predatory finned marine creature, legal costs would probably be huge.

I used to have an overdraft problem all the time. I took away all direct debits and set up automatic payments instead. No more problem. Took hours but haven’t gone into OD since.

If they win, say the bllion dollars, the lawyers get $250,000,000!!!? Wow, no wonder they're all over it. Still banks need to be more reasonable with their charges. Like Lawyers.....

Green taxes
Passport length

Had my motgage and insurance slush account set up perfectly to the dollar or so i thought, but had forgotten about the bank fee which put me into OD by $5ish so they charged me $10 for an unarranged overdraft fee:mad: Rang up and they said that i could get text alerts when this was going to happen for a another fee of $5 per month. Bloody rude when their own fees put you in OD especially when it is only one of a few accounts, and the others are quite healthy.

Da fuq?! I'm with ASB. There's no way a phone call cost $15. What if you didn't bank with them? "No, sorry, you can't speak to anyone until you pay us $15"??. Post a screen shot of your statement and prove my skeptical arse wrong :mobile:

ASB charged me one of these overdraft fees once.

I didn't pay it, and my account is now set up so that it can't go into overdraft. They resisted making that change - I'm cynically assuming because it's such a cash cow for them.

fun story about a bank who shall remain nameless: (from dem days when i was a corporate slave to the banking masters)

had an AP set up on an account, account balance was say 10$, (other account was fucking flush), AP was for 20$...
they didn't let the AP through "becuase the account would have gone into overdraft",
BUT they took the failed AP fee (15$) out of the account, putting it in overdraft, then charged an unarranged overdraft fee (50$ or something).

good fucking deal.
i emailed them with lots of abuse and they reversed it. but fuck them. assholes.

You're dead wrong there. Banking is a lot cheaper and comes with better interest rates in most other developed countries. I like to think of NZ as having pretty awesome banking rates for a "big Fiji". I was horrified when I moved back to NZ from the UK. There's charges for Africa here - it's out of hand - hence the lawsuit.
