Ever met a celebrity and been disappointed or have a good story to share?
I met Nigel Mansell at a Grandmasters Grand Prix test day. He barely said a word to anyone and fell asleep in between blasting his car around the track for celebrities and investors. Emerson Fittipaldi and Jean Alesi were there as well and they were very chatty as were Maxi Jazz and Chris Harris.
I chatted briefly with Nick Mason at Goodwood Festival of Speed and he was quite friendly. Kate Moss and Amy Winehouse aren’t (or wasn't in AW's case) but that’s another story…

Caught up with at the Deli in the local New World a few months later, we were both on 'choosing tea' duties...Took my Yamaha out to his place so could give it the once over, apparently the suspesion is ok...go figure!
....oh and Dave Dobbyn.

Years ago as kids a friend and I were extras in a NZ comedy. A couple of very well known NZ'ers starred in this show and my friend and I followed one of them during lunch break when he went off for a quiet walk. It was my first introduction to marijuana (well we guessed later on that's what he was doing, at the time it looked like he was really enjoying a roll-your-own).
And that's about it.

The US ambassador to NZ. I became a minor celebrity in Twizel for 15 minutes 20 years back for catching a huge trout in the Ohau river where it flowed into Lake Ruataniwha. She and her husband were visiting work, heard the story and wanted to meet me.

Yeah well you've met me Big Dave and I'm famous in my own house.
I've met a few famous people other than Big Dave - Hugh Anderson, Geoff Perry, Dale Wylie, Croz, Dave Hiscock, Robert Holden, Richard Scott and many other Kiwi racers, plus I was into Motorcross too so met a few of the old racers from back then in the 70's including the famous Mr Shirriffs - Morley.
Back then we had Gaston Rahier come to NZ so met him once in ChCh, also met Kiwis like Gary Goodfellow and Ross Horsburgh.
On the car scene met Peter Brock at a breakfast once.

Ken Dod, Randy Mamola, PF chili, A few UK TV celebs, Mick Doohan, Leo Sayer and....
Story: I have a brilliant memory for faces but names and why I know their faces, Nah.
So, there I am working security at the NEC when this tall guy with a familiar face walked towards me, I'm thinking, I know you really really well but I ain't got a clue where from. As he got closer I reasoned he must be a Firefighter from a nearby station or something, I knew his face as well as if he was a family member but feck all else was registering?
I gave up and gave him a really stupid smile so as not to appear rude, expecting a hand shake and a "how the hell are ya Mart" but the bastard walked straight past me. Feeling snubbed now myself, I shouted, "Not talking to me then ya snooty git!". As he turned and said "sorry, what" and his face went all angry like, his voice sent the terrible shock of realisation through me.
Yes I knew his face and yes I knew his voice, I watched him every Saturday morning hosting FECKING TISWAS. The man I had just chastised as an ignorant git was infact Chris Tarrant, host presenter and inventor of 'who wants to be a Millionaire'.
The best I could come up with in that nano second between recognising him, slagging him off and having a rather large angry man glowering at me was, (and I swear this is true), "Oh sorry Chris, I thought you were someone else"

Not met too many famous people. Biggest claim to fame is being related (cousins) to two of the Bay City Rollers (who...?).
My Dad always told of his big moment. We lived in the far north of Scotland in the early sixties (I was born there) - this was back in the days when the Queen Mother would holiday up there. Dad was returning from one of his cliff-edge "walks", when he saw a couple of Corgis running towards him. Hmmm, he thought.
Sure enough, up came the Queen Mum, with a couple of ladies-in-waiting (absolutely no security people). They stopped to chat, and Dad spent around twenty minutes talking to her about the location and wildlife. He never gave any hint that he knew who she was - she seemed delighted, while her staff gave Dad filthy looks.
Sometimes even the most famous people really enjoy being treated as an anonymous equal.

Got within arms reach of Michael Jackson at Starship Hospital (my daughter was there, and was a HUGE fan to boot) when he was out here with his History Concert. I have never been more blown away by the look of someone. He was perfect. Petite, and so perfectly made up. His hands were the same size as mine, such a fine boned person. He was just so lovely. He put me in mind of a hand painted porcelain doll. I wanted to take him home :blip:

I met Ivan Mauger down at the long track meeting he was promoting in Dunedin (Forbury). Someone has screwed up and they didn't have enough methanol. One of the organisers knew I used meth in a TQ I was racing at beachlands so asked if i could sell it to them. Went home to Andy Bay, got a full 20 litre can of fuel, took it back to Forbury and Mauger didn't want to pay full price for it. Apparently standing next to his eminence should have been reward enough. The other guys paid up though.

I had a bit to do with Ivan during the World long track champs, putting together the bike he did his demo on. He didn't come thru with all his promises but was friendly and appreciated my help.
Also met Barry Briggs snd Ronnie Moore plus Kelvin Tatum, Gird Riss, Jason Crump etc when scrutineering their bikes.
Sadly Ivan has health issues preventing any more public appearances and will not be at the Springs this weekend.

I hunted down (it wasnt hard - been in the same shop for decades) and spent some considerable time with Jack Wilson who should be more famous than he was.... But to people who love old triumphs - hes a bloody legend.... I met Burt Munro once - (he was very old by then) but Jack impressed me a lot more frankly... Burt was an artist - Jack knew the science of it...
Oh - I met some politicians too but they were just politicians... And some race car drivers, they were wankers.... shagged one of their ex's - she was a hottie fallen on hard times .... ;) Scariest man I saw (wasnt introduced but Vicki was) was head of the Mormon church... feckin heck... He was staying at Govt House in Wgtn when I worked there (sometime back in the early 80s) ... I was coming down the path passed the swimming pool when a Secret Service man stepped out of the bushes and asked me to wait while "hiz highness" finished his swim ...
Charlie got out of the pool and went into the dressing shed, then emerged with a towel wrapped around him .. the towel fell off ... revealing nothing underneath and a very very pale pear-shaped pommie ... 'orrible it was ...

I've met heaps of "Famous" people, but few celebrities. Someone who is famous in some circles may be completely unknown in others.
As a kid I would often arrive home from school and find Norm Kirk or Bill Rowling having a cup of tea with my Dad. Over the years I've been on first name basis with a number of politicians from both sides of the house.
More recently I have had personal contact with a number of famous scientists. Some of these I can even consider as friends, while others are adversaries.

Oh God. I forgot people I met while working at Mt Cook. Ed Hillary, Tem Morrison ... didn't meet them but saw actors Chris O'Donnell, Robyn Tunney, Bill Paxton and Scott Glenn while they were working on the movie 'The Vertical Limit' and staying at our hotel up there.
One of our managers saw April Ieremia naked once. She'd been pissing up in the Mt Cook tavern, had gone back to her room and ordered some food. Pizza I think. Anyway our manager took it up to deliver and getting no response at her door let himself in. She was lying there on top of the bed, naked and fast asleep. Good man that he was left the food outside the door and quietly left.

That is exactly why fame is over-rated. All the famous people I know and have met, from movie stars to sports stars to aviation celebrities, racing celebrities, politicians and millionnaires, business tycoons, etc. many I count among my friends, could walk down your street in total anonymity or get a passing glance as you wondered if... Few would be instantly recognisable and create a stir.
Without exception the one's I know are genuine and modest with no airs or graces and are easy to get along with.

Had a beer after the International at Teretonga with Jim Clark, Bruce McLaren and another. (Can't remember who... Possibly Jack Brabham, Denny Hulme or Angus Hislop). It was JC's last trip down under as he was killed shortly afterwards. Not sure, but I think BM was killed the same year. Late 60's. Also have Stirling Moss' autograph.

I think this thread has died :weep:
To be fair, this thread was doomed from the moment anyone world famous in New Zealand was mentioned.
Michael J Fox in a dairy in Miramar , Wellington when he was over here shooting 'The Frighteners'

Bill Hohepa. I went fishing with him when I was younger (12 years old) on kapiti island. He's, well, a bit of a grumpy fella (that was probably because I caught more fish than him and beat him a poker). :innocent:
I've also meet Gary Kemsley (for those that do surf fishing), nice guy. I would love to go for a fish with him sometime when I'm in his neck of the woods.

I laid some carpet for him a few years ago when lived at Snells beach...he asked if I wanted some lunch, I said ''well I was just going to go down the road and get a pie''...his reply was ''do you eat fish''?.. hell yeah!
Thought ''I might be in for a treat here''...ahhhhhhh wrong, he opened up a tin of salmon :killingme

Is Rhys Millen famous? I met him when I was on the Silver Fern last year, also met Rod. Rod is a great fellow to have a chat to.
