See you at the Ferry Peter. Think it's #5 or 6 for me, But haven't been to one since the Eighties.

Found this on Utube (1988 Rally) brought back a few memories of the gear and bikes used then.

Doing solo this year, the plan is:

Leaving dorkland early Thursday, hauling thru to welly. Catch a late afternoon ferry, probably the 6pm and overnight in Picton or Blen.
Friday to Christchurch and do some work there and overnight in CH.
Sat thru to the site, hopefully do the Dansey's pass.
Drink and fall down sat night.
See how far I get norf on Sunday
Hop the ditch and back to dorkland for a big sleep.

Windiest...brass monkey...everrrrr.....
Roads closed all over the place, cops stopping folks and giving them bacon sarnies and hot drinks while they wait on the side of the road at Omakau for the wind to die down.
Apparently bikes off the road all over the place.
I managed to sneak home 'round a back road...there's no wind here but it's bucketing down.

There were tents flattened all over the place last night and embers flying all over the place...there'll be tons of newly leaky tents now.
The fire brigade turned up around 1am to put the bonfire out and the organisers went 'round the site putting out the drum fires.
The band had to stop early because of the wind.
It blew without stopping all night and probably still is.

Flip
2nd June 2013, 13:33
Just got in.

My dome tent got flattened by the wind, broke a couple of poles. We didn't have too much trouble getting out over the pig route but I was on the sidecar.

Erelyes
2nd June 2013, 17:20
My first brass. :baby: Copy 'windy as fuck'.

Got a faceful of tent in the middle of the night, tent's fibreglass poles were bending into an 'S' with the gusts, didn't break thankfully (I borrowed it!).

Waited til 9.40 to get on the road. Even still, bike was doing an awesome Costa Concordia impression on the way into Ranfurly. Grabbed coffee, headed back out an hour-ish later and it was much better after then - windy but not gusty.

Good fun, peculiar weather, I plan to be back (sans L plates) next time!

Mr. Blonde
2nd June 2013, 17:42
Costa Concordia <- most of the way back to Chch

I was a support vehicle this year so for first time walked into the Rally, but still had a great time.
This one will be remembered for the gale force winds, so here's my wind memories:
The wind creating back-draughts in the long drop dunnies.
Sparks from the drum fires landing on the 'down wind" tents.
Alloy tent poles are much more resilient to wind than fibreglass poles.
The band playing Led Zeppelin as the stage was rocking from the wind.
The sound of the big wind gusts coming across the valley - it sounded like a quake coming.....
Did I mention it was windy?

Ghost_Bullet
2nd June 2013, 19:36
Was awesome.... windiest for sure, but worth it.

paturoa
2nd June 2013, 20:19
Fecking wind!. I've got a cheap small dome tent from the swearhouse and the fibreglass poles smacked me in the head a few times as the tent had a little lie down in the wind.

I got bugger all sleep so just got up early and left the site about 7am. I was still uber windy.

I thought I'd do the Dansey's pass and when I did a left turn for Naesby, I had the bike cranked right over just to keep on my side of the road from the wind. I went past a row of trees on my left and just about ended up in the left hand ditch. There is a tight right hand corner not too far along the road and I still had the bike cranked over to the left as I was going around the right hander. FREAKY!

I then remembered the gravel roads and thought the better course of action was to get to the coast so I turned around and went to Palmerston.

Just past the turn off there was stretch of road in the same direction as the wind and there was a bunch of leave and shit blowing along the road, I slowed down to 80ks, the same as the leaves!!!!!

:Oi: Well Jack had a great time at the Brass ( Jack the ripper) with a host of tents bust up or torn by the wind gales. Awesome rally with great company.
Thank You to the Police for their support Sunday morning with the ongoing weather conditions. They stopped us at Omakau, feed us brekkie bacon samies, and coffee, then ensured we were comfy opening up the local rugby club and camping ground to sit it out for a while. Finally an escort through the high wind area of concern had us on our soggy way South .....YAWN! :woohoo:

3rd June 2013, 09:44
Was certainly windy. Just finished refuelling at Ranfurly and as I was standing in the forecourt wondering whether to go or not, a piece of the building broke off with a massive wind gust and collected an unfortunate rider just pulling into the servo. She got hit by a piece of wallboard in the ankle and dropped the bike. Fortunately she wasn't badly injured and the bike had little damage but I couldn't help think that a thin piece of wallboard at the right angle could have caused a nasty injury.
We had a coffee at the busy Cafe and left around 10.30 over the Pig Route and it was fine then.
And yes, a big thumbs up to the organisers who probably didn't get any sleep at all.

The morning sky was more spectacular than the fire this year and the fluro planes in the sky way cooler than the unspectacular snow on the tip of the mountains far off

There was a cameraman wandering about Omakau while we were holed up waiting for the wind to drop on Sunday morning. Apparently the guy was getting footage for the next season of TV One's Highway Cops series. Some of us could well be on that.:bleh:

Sad that the press :spanking: had to front page the low life idiot pulling a knife on vital service people. :spanking:

Sure was interesting ride to ChCh on Sunday: stopped at the top of Danseys and 2 of us were blown over, then riding leaning hard over while travelling straight(ish) on hakataramea, watching a pretty big pine tree crashing down beside the road and showering bits all over the track, bike nearly blown over again while shutting the gate, being passed by my own dust at 100km/h...

I did the Danseys on Saturday going to the site and it was a nice ride. I chickened out on Sunday morning as the side wind was crazy at the Naseby turnoff and I didn't fancy doing that on gravel.

I was one of the 4 blown off the bike between Omakau and Alex......all 4 went down together thru a cutting just outside Omakau.
Been riding for years never experienced anything like it. Took ages to get bike up as wind that hard and just fighting it.
No way could you put bike on side stand.......One female passenger in our group on another bike tumbling down the road............

4 of us plus 2 others from earlier group got through while the other 3 from our group went back to Omakau after cops closed road..........

Only minor damage to bikes.......
