View Full Version : Dry, warm, safe and comfy boots?

With the beginning of the cold weather I realised I need new boots, too. My stupid ‘waterproof’ Teknik boots are not waterproof (nor warm, or safe…) and are falling apart already. Ideally I’d want boots that keep me dry and warm and are safe and comfy at the same time. But not sure if my expectations are too high with wanting one pair of boots that fulfils all of those points. I’m having my eye on some nice Sidi Cobra Gore Tex. Not sure about the warm and comfy bit for those boots though. Does anyone have any other ideas? (Aside of the one with the plastic bag inside the boots )

I can say Sidi boots are the shizz, my last pair lasted me 10 years and are still doing light duties. Mine weren't Goretex (coz it wasn't around when I bought them) but I've never had really wet feet in them. Try a few on and see which boots fit best. Any of the "big" brands should do what it says on the box and last pretty well. I would look at Gaerne, TCX, RST, as well for a start.

Gore-Tex is the key word, I have it said time and time again. I have had my current boots for nine years...they are waterproof. Oxtar Boots.
Over the years, I have replaced every bit of gear multiple times but only ever, the one pair of boots.
It has taken me nine years to finally acquire the gear that I will ever need......until I see something else

Spending the money from the outset will save you in the years to follow...http://www.motomail.co.nz/estore/style/asbowgortex.aspx
Thick socks for that extra comfort, none of this namby pamby girly acrylic crap.:baby: http://www.motomail.co.nz/estore/style/rvpasocks.aspx

Sidi FTW.

Unless your feet are the wrong shape (and it will be your feet, not the boots), Sidi are hard to beat. My commuter boots are Sidi Jungle Tepor (not Goretex). Cost me $300 new 5 years ago and they see daily use. Always dry, warm and comfy. Not ridiculously hot in summer, either. Could do with a tad more protection, maybe, but they have never put a foot wrong ;)

My next boots will also be Sidi (if these things ever bloody well die), although I will probably go with GoreTex and a bit more heft to them, like these (https://www.fc-moto.de/epages/fcm.sf/sec50b40908f9/?ObjectPath=/Shops/10207048/Products/Sidi-Armada-Gore-Tex-Crossover/SubProducts/Sidi-Armada-Gore-Tex-Crossover-0002).

+2 on Sidi's. Had my goretex adventure boots at leats 6 years, dry feet, all day comfort & not a stitch coming loose. For warmth you need good socks & a bit of air space. Cramped boots = cold tootsies.

Not what you're after, but my Forma Adventure boots are fantastic.

The only way to benchmark waterproof? When you're walking through a stream or river and the boot wants to float. Nothing beats an immersion test :msn-wink:

+1 for Sidi from me too. Have a non-gortex pair and have never had wet feet (and I've gone a few days in pretty heavy rain)

I've just had mine re-soled after about 4 -5 years and will get another pair when these need replacing.

They are nice, pity we don't have the selection here in NZ like that of FC-Moto.

I've got 3 pairs of Sidi's (an older Vertebra road boot and some Crossfire MX boots complete the collection) and they're all a 44 and all a good fit. So if you fit one pair of Sidi's, you should be good to go. If in doubt buy those in a 44 and I'll have 'em off you if no good :)

Excellent, cheers. I've been meaning to obtain either these or the Sidi equivalent for ages.

Any idea if there's a local stockist?

Grasshopper, Torino Gore-Tex or Stella Torre WP (both A/Stars) are popular boots. I get a lot of positive feedback on Torre walking comfort.
Most top end brands are reliable for WP. Warmth is subjective depending on how prone to cold your tootsies are.

I've never worried about having wet feet so no personal pref. I wear 2 pair sox in cold - 1pr full Kevlar & 1 pr thick thermal socks for warmth which gives extra comfort.

You need to decide whether you want sports, tourer or cruiser boots. Heel or not? Styles will have varying safety features so compare details. Then find a WP within that style.

Take your bike sox with you to try on (boots) in store. Walk around the shop for a while, sit on a bike if they have 'em & see how boots function with controls. Check if boots slip on pegs & floor. Some are grippier.

Some of the boots folk mentioned are in guys sizing only... so depends on the size of ya foots gurlie :)

Good luck Angels

Ok so, after what I read here and throughout the interwebz I decided to go for the Sidi Cobra Gore Tex http://www.fc-moto.de/epages/fcm.sf/en_IE/?ObjectPath=/Shops/10207048/Products/Sidi-Cobra-Gore/SubProducts/Sidi-Cobra-Gore-0002, but I was also quite tempted by these http://www.fc-moto.de/epages/fcm.sf/en_IE/?ObjectPath=/Shops/10207048/Products/Sidi-Clever-Gore/SubProducts/Sidi-Clever-Gore-0001

Ah well, I had to decide for one pair. Ordered them, a week later I got the shipping confirmation and another week later they arrived. No probs at all. I'm really happy with them so far. It is a very comfy boot and feels very solid with protection at all the right places. So far it has kept me warm on short rides, but after this weekend I'll probably be able to say more about that. Unfortunately I assume I will also be able to say more about how they hold up in the rain. Looks like the weather is going downhill throughout the weekend. We will see.

From what I've read so far you can't go wrong with any of the Sidi's, but Goretex is definitely a plus. Mine are holding up quite nicely so far, but I haven't actually been in the rain for more than 20 minutes since I got them, so I can't say much about how waterproof they really are.

I hope you have no more problems with yours than I have with my adventures, the old ones. That is, getting them re-soled. Hard to find a good cobbler nowadays. Great boots. Still like new apart from the soles.......

There's one in Newmarket, The Shoe Sherriff, he added a wedge to Anne's boot sole's, probably too far away for you though.
