Has anyone heard any news on when this will be available?
LTSA website still has 'late 2013' which is not here yet, but we are getting there. I am rather keen to do one of these to get onto my full, and maybe get the chance to get onto a different bike for the summer. That 10L tank annoys me a bit! I'd love something that I didn't have to sweat once I reached 150kms! I have a 220km range including reserve, but once I am near to switching over I begin to worry. (Plus an actual fuel gauge wouldn't go amiss. 'Slosh slosh, sounds like enough')

When you fuel up at Te Kuiti (on the Prison ride) the next fuel is 145kms away in Taumaranui. :sweatdrop

I'm pretty sure that at the moment they are only putting together the one for going from learners to restricted. As far as I know they haven't even started on restricted to full.

At the moment, we are still trialling the marking system.
As far as we know, it will be Nov/Dec time. work is currently being done on the Learner to Restricted phase, at least, by those of us doing the trials. There may be work going on in NZTA on the Restricted to Full phase. I don't think R to F will be far behind the L to R.

I am quite excited about it. Even though I am already near getting rid of my L plate. (Time wise not skill wise. Skill wise I am FAARRR off)
Though could thy have not thought up of a better acronym?
Typical govt, hitting people where it hurts.

in short:
prove your abilities by doing some courses and shit, instead of waiting out the time between licences.
probably ideal for those out there that have ridden for years and never bothered getting the bit of paper to please mr plod.

Not hard to understand. It's a course designed to cut down the time you wait to go from learners to restricted and then restricted to full. If you pass the course, you don't have to wait the whole 6 months you currently do, to get your restricted licence. Comprende?

Oh I understand, I just don't really have any thoughts on it. I could take it or leave it :)

unless youve been riding for years off road, or illegally, theres a good argument in favour of leaving it, and getting extra experience.
Doesnt mean you shouldnt do other rider training though!

Tricia, what sort of conditions are used to determine competence?
Nearly every one is honky dori in normal riding conditions. How is competency assessed for when the shit hits the fan?... Like when accidents actually happen.

Tricia1000 here seems to be in the know, even more so than NZTA. I emailed them the other day asking this very same question and they said they didn't know. Not even an estimated date. Took over two weeks for a response too.
I just hope it's out before the end of the year. If it's out closer to middle of next I'll just flag the CBTA and do the easier full test instead. Kinda annoying how quickly they took away the theory courses to get your time down without having any alternative for people to move on to.

I think its pretty poor they have not rolled out such a system whilst overhauling the licensing system.
What about people who have ridden on lower license conditions for years, or say due to work need to ride outside the 5am-10pm learners hours?
Or like a workmate, bought a bike to save spending stupid money on petrol ferrying his daughter from one end of Auckland to the other, now cannot do so for another year and a half?
I have full 1 and 6, but have plenty of friends who have been inconvenienced by the new system.

Riddle me this. If I buy a bike when I get my learners, and ride it on average once per month for 2 years, vs someone who rides daily for 1 year, who will likely be the more experienced rider?
Crap, sorry, was trying to use common sense.

Those of us who have ridden for decades on lower license, deserve what we get.
Why the fuck should it ever be easy for someone to graduate to a full license?

Said sense, is far from fucken "common". Anyway, what is your interpretation of competency based training?

Did he know the LAW before purchasing said bike?

.
Get an exemption from work or take it into account when applying for licences or jobs.
Life.
The test is not that hard... well yes it is hard- I've done a trial and failed (as I expected to). But looking at it its really things that all competent riders should know.
I know people who have been riding for far less than me and have just picked it up like 'that' and would pass it in a blink.......and then there's me.

Thanks for that info :) I guess I will have to wait and see what happens first! My 18 months is up in April, abouts. I foolishly delayed my restricted test a month from September to October last year and got stung by the changes. I do keep wondering if I could drag out my old defensive driving certificate from the 90's if I'd be able to get the 6 months knocked off! ;)

Unfortunately, you wouldn't be able to use an old DDC certificate, for class 6, as you weren't on a restricted class 6 when you did it...

pretty sure that there is already facilities to apply for variances due to work and family situation but to be honest im not sure its a good idea for someone with limited experience to be pillioning
What about people who have ridden on lower license conditions for years
is that not their own fault for not getting off their ass and getting it done, and don't give me any BS about not having time, if it is important enough they would make time

You can apply for an exemption, so that you can ride/drive outside your normal licence conditions... It is not a quick process, at all.
Each person is exempted according to their individual needs. I wouldnt expect the riding outside your time request to be very complicated. But I doubt that an exemption would be granted to allow for a pillion to be carried, until the full licence is attained...
I had a student (class 1 car) whose mother applied for an exemption, so that OCCASIONALLY the girl could drive her younger sister to school.....very occasionally...The hours, and which days of the week, plus the route that would be taken, the age of the two girls etc, all had to be supplied to NZTA before a decision was made... NZTA take that all very seriously...
HTH, but probably not what you wanted to hear..

Any update on this? It was my understanding that there wasn't a set date for its implementation yet.
I've heard that CBTA1 was getting close, but any more word on CBTA2 (restricted to full)?

Haven't heard anything recently..
Our trials had to be submitted at the beginning of last month.
It should still be on track for the end of this year.

Not quite - that's when the applications close for those interested in delivering the CBTA
The actual 'go live date' is now 1st March 2014.
