    Competency based training?

Has anyone heard any news on when this will be available?

LTSA website still has 'late 2013' which is not here yet, but we are getting there. I am rather keen to do one of these to get onto my full, and maybe get the chance to get onto a different bike for the summer. That 10L tank annoys me a bit! I'd love something that I didn't have to sweat once I reached 150kms! I have a 220km range including reserve, but once I am near to switching over I begin to worry. (Plus an actual fuel gauge wouldn't go amiss. 'Slosh slosh, sounds like enough')

When you fuel up at Te Kuiti (on the Prison ride) the next fuel is 145kms away in Taumaranui.

I'm pretty sure that at the moment they are only putting together the one for going from learners to restricted. As far as I know they haven't even started on restricted to full.

    CBTA Timings

At the moment, we are still trialling the marking system.
As far as we know, it will be Nov/Dec time. work is currently being done on the Learner to Restricted phase, at least, by those of us doing the trials. There may be work going on in NZTA on the Restricted to Full phase. I don't think R to F will be far behind the L to R.

I am quite excited about it. Even though I am already near getting rid of my L plate. (Time wise not skill wise. Skill wise I am FAARRR off)

Though could thy have not thought up of a better acronym?

    in short:
prove your abilities by doing some courses and shit, instead of waiting out the time between licences.

probably ideal for those out there that have ridden for years and never bothered getting the bit of paper to please mr plod.

Not hard to understand. It's a course designed to cut down the time you wait to go from learners to restricted and then restricted to full. If you pass the course, you don't have to wait the whole 6 months you currently do, to get your restricted licence. Comprende?

Oh I understand, I just don't really have any thoughts on it. I could take it or leave it

unless youve been riding for years off road, or illegally, theres a good argument in favour of leaving it, and getting extra experience.
Doesnt mean you shouldnt do other rider training though!

Tricia, what sort of conditions are used to determine competence?

Nearly every one is honky dori in normal riding conditions. How is competency assessed for when the shit hits the fan?... Like when accidents actually happen.

Tricia1000 here seems to be in the know, even more so than NZTA. I emailed them the other day asking this very same question and they said they didn't know. Not even an estimated date. Took over two weeks for a response too.

I just hope it's out before the end of the year. If it's out closer to middle of next I'll just flag the CBTA and do the easier full test instead. Kinda annoying how quickly they took away the theory courses to get your time down without having any alternative for people to move on to.

I think its pretty poor they have not rolled out such a system whilst overhauling the licensing system.

What about people who have ridden on lower license conditions for years, or say due to work need to ride outside the 5am-10pm learners hours?

Or like a workmate, bought a bike to save spending stupid money on petrol ferrying his daughter from one end of Auckland to the other, now cannot do so for another year and a half?

I have full 1 and 6, but have plenty of friends who have been inconvenienced by the new system.
