I've almost completed rebuilding my rd400 and need a new project.
I'm thinking of building a quintessential bucket racer from a ag100.
It's going to be very dirty and cheap,
I'm talking die grinder port job, fat jets, no airbox and chopped and hacked expansion chamber.
Im a fitter welder and have a fair idea on mechanical things.
Sound like a good idea?
I have no idea as to how competitive it would be, as i'm sure there are some who spend big $$$ on making ridiculously fast bucket racers, but im not sure of that, hence why some clarification would be great :D
cheers!

Bucket races are held on short circuits aren't they? It doesn't need to do the ton. In saying that, i could just play around with the sprockets, if it is an issue.

The old AG is not really worth the effort.
I tried to get decent power out of an AG100 twenty odd years ago but it was a no hoper, ended up giving it away to one of the local kids.
Serious money? Whats serious money when it comes to a bucket racer, 5k, 10k, 15k? Build to what you can afford.

haha sweet bike! I heard bucket racing was about having fun and playing around on bikes that are expendable, thats the big attraction for me, haha. I dont want to necessarily win, i just want to have fun, haha

Cheap builds are possible. But this is addictive & fun so ask yourself where you will be at in 2 years time? If you are the non follow through type the answer is: - with an add in TM for a 1/2 arsed poop project no one realy wants.
If you are a decent engineer and like riding the answer inside 4 months is: "I need some decent tyres" thus 17" wider wheels & some brakes please.
Sell the Ag for whatever you can get & start with a better base will provide more fun & something more saleable if it all goes to seed.
The easy option is find a cheap but small 250 chassis like a TZR or RGV or RG & transplant something in it. GP125 engine engine has growing support since TZ's thread & knowledge sharing.

He means the first 3 gears are virtually the same for pottering around fencelines with a Ewe on the handle bars, but then a crazy jump to the next 2 gears for trail back home to get your blonde home while shes still in the mood. Can't fix that with sprockets.

This sort of thing would be a good start (though think 18" rear on this older stuff)

sell engine for whatever & keep pipes, carb, maybe radiator.

Welp, this has thrown things into perspective a bit.....
Much pricier than I initially thought, for that kind of money to be competitive, I might as well put my rd on the track, and race in the classics...

Because I own a RD400 hence the yamaha rd man I ditched the spaces. I then realised after i'd saved it, that it could be read otherwise, and would infact be interpreted as very douchey.
Do you dance like this by any chance?

 Chortle snort snigger.
The old fella bought a brand spankin blue RD400 back in the day, I can still smell & taste the fear I felt hanging onto the back of him with me little open face Bell helmet on, metallic bronze, and wellies, black, as he wheelied off every crest he could find. Perversely I've loved 2t's ever since.
Have no clue about buckets but that is where my racing career would start & stay.

Get a premix. Something like a bucketized FXR 150, and you've got room to move for improvement or be semi competitive as is, and enjoying your racing from day one.
Not expensive really, just don't run it on alcohol, that's for the rider.

Two grandish for a race ready FXR that will see you right to start with, and port in the fuel tank does the rings no favours.
